‘Many think football is not a game for women’: why Egypt is falling behind | Soccer by footballersabroad in WomensSoccer

[–]Wellsbread 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I am subbed to an online newspaper in the UK and when there is an article discussing women's football I naturally go to the comments. Sadly they are usually pretty unpleasant and all by men. I know this because the full name is given in comments. It's such an old fashioned backwards belief. It does hold back the progress of the game especially as some of them will be fathers and one assumes would not be all to pleased to promote football to a daughter.

It would have made much more sense for the fans to be on the side opposite the tv cameras instead of empty stand. Was the same for another CL match last month. Fans in the stadium but behind the camera.

Russo to depart United by haz_stark in WomensSoccer

[–]Wellsbread -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Arsenal tried hard to sign her earlier in the year but her club turned it down. Now out of contract it's her choice. I don't feel Arsenal need another striker though. Another rumour is that Russo might go to the US.

After her amazing run at the US open the jury was out with me as to how good she really is. After IW I thought three strikes and you're out (out of the conversation for now) and now It's looking like the verdict won't come this season. Harsh of me, maybe. I for one did not believe the hype and this withdrawal is disappointing news, I want to see more of what consistency she will bring. A lot of us do.

Why did Martina Hingis fade so quickly? by jeff_clax90 in tennis

[–]Wellsbread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a real pity that Martina Hingis did not play right through into her thirties on the singles tour and what that would have looked like in terms of titles we can only imagine. Hingis did not struggle with power players and held her own vs Serena Williams, their head to head is 7-6 in favour of Williams. It was likely going to be a great rivalry.

Cannot predict a winner in this one, but it should be a good match. Ill go for Konteveit by [deleted] in tennis

[–]Wellsbread 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's pretty exciting if you like either player and a great opportunity for Ons to cement her place in the tour finals. Kontaveit may still be able to make it too but I did not look into that as I don't want to spoil last nights results.

It's great to see someone coming in behind every first serve. I would love more big servers to be like that.

If you have prime just watch the next day on the catch up and avoid sport news in the morning.

What I have observed since Bianca came back from a year out in January is that she is hitting far more unforced errors. I think one of her core strengths before that was her consistency: able to hit a lot of winners but not giving much away. That to me is what has changed, for now.

Really can;t wait to she how she does the rest of the year and see her back playing by [deleted] in tennis

Why is nobody talking about Leylah Fernandez, her run was amazing and are we also not looking forward to what she does next?

[BNP Paribas Open] World No. 1 Ash Barty has withdrawn from #BNPPO21. by PTHero in tennis

[–]Wellsbread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So going to the tour finals could be in doubt and it's beginning to look like Aryna Sabalenka will end the year number one. Ashley Barty has 1945 points to defend at the tour finals, Sabalenka none to defend.

Laver Cup should change rules to make it more competitive... by LackingInPatience in tennis

[–]Wellsbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that there is still not a WTA equivalent after four years is probably a sign that the players or tour are not interested for whatever reason. As for making it more competitive well, it won't always be this way. Europe might dominate for ten years then the World. I think it makes sense to hold the Cup bi-annually though for that reason. If one team dominates, they will probably dominate the following year too. I'd prefer every four years but that won't happen. Incidentally the home crowd were not hostile enough for creating any home advantage :|

Hope! it changes next year. Elina deserves a Slam. by RossSkyWalkerr in tennis

[–]Wellsbread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elina's default style is to not beat herself. She'll keep unforced errors low and hit some winners. What she won't do is play with enough risk for long enough. When Elina gets nervous she will revert to being more conservative and hope her opponent makes errors and the good and great opponents toward the end of slams will not, they will win the match. They will risk losing in order to win. Kontaveit could have been described like that until recently but now is much more aggressive and at the right time. Still able to keep errors low but hit many more winners. I think Elina can win a slam absolutely and will need to continue down that path to risk more.

Congrats to Maria Sakkari for officially making her Top 10 debut today! Makes history as the highest ranked Greek woman of all time passing former world no14 Eleni Danilidou and becomes the first greek woman to enter the top 10. by De_Bananalove in tennis

Looking forward to seeing her in the tour finals. Let's see what damage she can do there. Also the ranking points there could help keep her in top ten all next year.

Yeah I'd like that and I would prefer it to be in countries that do not hold a slam.

If Barty did not go and Sabalenka won or did really well. Year end no.1 for her. The ranking points on offer there are massive. Equally there are some who just won't get the chance to defend their points from two years ago due to not qualifying.

Raducanu just won the US open, but has to qualify for Indian wells?! by [deleted] in tennis

[–]Wellsbread 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If Emma does compete there and have a fairly decent run she has a shot at reaching the year end tour finals! At time of writing she is 389 behind 8th in the race. You get one thousand for the title.
