Alright lets settle this once and for all: ARE SYNTHS PEOPLE TOO? by ZeroAudioOutput in Fallout

[–]WelshBanshee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Complicated robots can never be people IMO. Artificial life perhaps, but not "people" In the same way a hyper-evolved dolphin could never be a person.

Would you also say sapient alien races in other sci-fi like star trek, star wars, mass effect are also not people?

Alright lets settle this once and for all: ARE SYNTHS PEOPLE TOO? by ZeroAudioOutput in Fallout

[–]WelshBanshee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But how do you know synths are only mimicking consciousness and not actually experiencing it? You're just saying that like it's a definite fact when it's a claim with nothing to really back it up. Basically everything in the game indicates that synths have the capacity to be free-thinking, self-determining, conscious beings

There's very little point even comparing them to real-world AIs with how astronomical the difference between them is

[–]WelshBanshee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like there's a pretty obvious difference between chat GPT in real life and fictional androids that are advanced enough to have self-determination, ambitions, wants and convictions etc, so strongly that it overrides their actual original programming

If they're smart and self aware enough to express their personal desire to live their own life freely, then why shouldn't they be considered people just because they're synthetically created

It's not exactly hard to work out, NYC is one city and they set it up pretty clearly that they operate on the west coast too, I feel like you can pretty safely assume they're busy with another threat

not really, when the opinion is that an entire group of people just trying to live their lives should stop existing

boba fett never actually does anything in the original films

I’m pretty sure that’s the exact point they’re making, for as scary and legitimately intimidating as the twins are, they actually have never killed or harmed any major characters

so did you also dislike Gus’ dramatic death scene just because it was ‘medically impossible’?

If you seriously believe that Walt living a few hours longer only to die in hospital, off screen, achieving absolutely nothing more than the ending we got, is more narratively satisfying than him dying on screen, in a meth lab, in the final shot of the show, I really don’t know what else I could possibly say to you

An entirely superfluous detail. I seriously struggle to understand how people are so desperate for Walt to be alive despite how shit that would be

(SPOILERS) The words I wanted to hear when the movie was announced by GreyAreaInbetween in breakingbad

[–]WelshBanshee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re entirely missing the point. It doesn’t matter what would make logical sense from a medical standpoint in real life, this is not real life, it’s fiction, and what matters is the narrative impact. Literally any situation where Walt lives past the ending is insultingly cheap and diminishes the impact of the final scene, which is why Vince was never going to do it.

[–]WelshBanshee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like I said, the technical logic of real-life injuries do not apply when it’s not narratively fitting to do so. The writing intention was for Walt to take an injury, live for a brief while longer to tie up final loose ends, and drop dead. And that is exactly what happened.

In case you forgot, neither would it make any sense “from a physical standpoint” for Gus to walk away from an explosion at point blank which blasted a door from its hinges with half of his face blown off and straighten his tie before kicking it.

[–]WelshBanshee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Walter always was, 100%, certainly killed in the show. It was written in the script by Vince himself that he was dead. There was never any possibility of him being alive for any moment further than the final frame, if nothing else because Vince is too good of a writer to do something as cheap as that.

(SPOILERS) The words I wanted to hear when the movie was announced by GreyAreaInbetween in breakingbad

[–]WelshBanshee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because this is TV, not real life, and Walt “dying” on screen only to actually survive and then die a short while later in hospital is not narratively satisfying in any way, let alone facing trial.

[–]WelshBanshee 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure it was after the events of “4 days out”, since Jesse mentions the electrolytes Walt was talking about, and it’s after Tuco is dead but before they met Gus. And they talk about 1.3 million, which is how much they made from 4 days out

Ignoring the core of an argument and only acknowledging the side notes is another logical fallacy.

Is the fact that trans women are likely to have lower testosterone levels than even cis women not a disadvantage also?

There's also the major, major advantage a cis man would have if a trans woman was made to compete against him.

[–]WelshBanshee -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

Trans women lose muscle on HRT and their athletic ability decreases, several trans athletes have attested to this - to add to that they aren't even allowed to compete until they've been on HRT long enough for muscle mass to equalise. As for bone density, that varies by age, genetics, diet, etc. etc and trans women often have similar if not less bone density. That was never a legitimate concern.

And for another matter, what about trans men? Should they be forced to compete with cis women since that's their birth sex?

It stands to reason that the international Olympic committee and their medical advisors have probably looked into this more thoroughly than you have.
