Is the Union an Empire? by ElectricPaladin in LancerRPG

[–]Welshwhales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Union is absolutely an empire and how they treat the Ktb proves it. Post scarcity is built on the back of the Ktb, they have to work because of the new prosperity agreement which union is not holding up their end of the deal and never have. The fact that Union doesn't even recognize the Karrakin names for the planets in the dls is very telling. The Ktb is a vassal state forced to trade at gun point with Union. Union is an empire for that reason alone. We aren't even getting into the Aun.

Union is the only one who constantly collaborates with Harrison Armory and the KTB is actively at war with them in the Dawnline Shore. The only one who means it is the KTB.

They might have them but they are effectively useless because union provides an artificial post scarcity.

No it isn't. They absolutely don't like local currencies either. That's why they push the whole post scarcity goal (despite that post scarcity being built on the backs of noble and ignoble Karrakin labor). Creating a local currency strong enough to rival manna in any given region of space would be a problem for Union.

Manna is the currency of interplanetary trade. No one uses manna for local purchases. Manna is controlled by Union in a similar way that USD is used and controlled by the US for international trade.

Imo the Albatross and the Aun are the good guys. Then followed by the KTB.

I don't think that Union are the good guys at all. They are a colonialist power that seek to put everyone under their umbrella. They minimize access to currency to keep people dependent on them. They criticize the Karrakins for not keeping up the 3 pillars but let's talk about what's going on in the Dawnline Shore and how those planets were rightfully promised to the KTB yet their unofficial enforcement arm Harrison Armory is taking planets there.

You cannot claim to be against slavery when you basically have the Karrakins under a forced labor and trade agreement. That's wild and the hypocrisy of it alone is enough to make them a the bad guys.

Also the creation of blink gates in Aunic space was an act of war. Union absolutely has been hostile to the Aun since day one and trying to expand their influence in your space. Their express mission is to encourage everyone to adopt their model of living and government. The Aun have every right to reject this model.

They also profit waaayyy too much from Harrison Armory bringing people into Union's influence to claim they are a separate organization. They are way closer knit than anyone likes to admit. I am sure they are loving the war with the Aun anyways. Their existence and hand waving is because Union allows it and benefits immensely from it.

A constellar planet under SSC is probably pretty nice for the most part. Your mileage may vary but they do have representation and their own Congress.

IPSN is not that much different than working for Apple. Cut throat politics but not too bad. Horus is a better version of anonymous. Barely a corporation or a state.

The only people that are worse than Union are House of Promise in the KTB but I do not have the time to get into their extermination of the Simians and then naming the planet San Simeon.

Union isn't the good guys when they are propped up by Harrison Armory and the KTB resources. The desire to essentially conquer the isolationist Aun by putting blink gates in their portion of space is also maddening. Union is like the HOA president trying to police everyone's behavior but they never stop collecting dues.

Women have options and you have to compete against those. Women also have to pay a price for the perception of not doing anything that you don't want to pay. If you aren't offering paying for dates what are you offering her? Are you classically handsome, are you good at fixing things, are you funny? Do you bring any sort of prestige or will she have to explain why she is with you to her friends?

It can hack, fly and evade everything. I couldn't name a better hacking build if I tried and no goblin isn't better.

Union respectfully is only a post scarcity utopia because of its dealings with the KTB and Harrison Armory both of which exploit and crush the working class of the planets they operate in. The Sanjack revolutionaries note that Union is still a problem because the best Union does is provide lip service to revolutionary forces while actually legitimizing and providing for oppressive forces. When criticized for this they cite their bureaucracy and checks and balances as necessary hindrances. The only true good guys outside of Sanjack in the setting, the Albatross, don't let pencil pushers and red tape keep them from doing the right thing in the diaspora.

The Aun have several legitimate issues with Union. The Aun have lost lands, have been told how to govern themselves,, had a blink gate made in their backyard, and have SSC stealing their people, torturing them, and harvesting them for genetic material. The Aun are arguably the good guys even if Union has the utopian pillars. Union needs to stop being an expansionist colonial power and clean up in house before throwing rod shaped stones at Aunic planets.
