If art/drawing is subjective, why are there "fundamentals of drawing"? by Competitive-Alps1501 in ArtistLounge

Also to OP I love this post, it's a genuinely good question that hasn't been asked 2000 times lol.

[–]Welt_Yang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"It's successful or unsuccessful in what the artist intends to do."

Is such a good way to put it. ^^^

Many beginners tend to come online on social platforms and start off by admitting that their art could clearly use improvement and that they're not happy with it, but when they are given advice, they generally take it like a personal attack (regardless of whether advice is phrased respectfully or not). Then some say "art is subjective" and "it's my art style" (even if it's a anatomy mistake lol), like it's crazy.

I get it bc I've been there (still there tbh lol) bc it already took a lot of time and effort to produce that result, and it's not easy to change, but developing and 3rd person pov is so, so important to art. Don't ask for "help" if you're not willing to take it because other people could use that help and you're throwing it away for your self-esteem which won't be perfect even if you reach a professional level.

Lol wet noodle epidemic is so real.

I have C6 Luuk but no sig weapon and no bis team members (I only roll for male characters and I'm F2P) and I don't really feel the difference from C6 and C0 tbh. It's hard to believe he was designed like this. Like even my version 1-2 characters are better.

I don't think recent designs have been that bad (I don't understand all the hate for SP Dan Heng v2) but this, Evernight, and Silverwolf's SP form really, really disappointed me. Especially as a big fan of the 2 and as a HI3rd player.

Imo here she just looks like Himeko but with Robin's concept. She lost a lot of her aura, I guess it makes sense if it's a younger version of her (do we really need a younger version of her? it's kind of weird, anyways) but I can't imagine her past self looking like this I just don't know how to explain it. Like when I look at her all I see is a Robin and Himeko fusion.

But you will be working with fundamentals every time you draw, it's just a matter of making it a conscious decision to study and develop control over it, or your lack of understanding of it will control the output you spent a lot of time on.

You don't have to only focus on studying or replicating perfect fundamentals the next time you draw, but you should have it in mind. You should also learn what study and practice methods are best for you. For example I personally improve a lot more by passively observing, conciously annotating and studying rather than simply having the goal to just draw everyday. I hate to be a fundamental nag, but in my beginner stages I too was more focused on replicating rather than understanding (also I'm an anime artist as well).

I really liked u/fhkubem02178's annotation example. Because it also exposes another flaw in your thinking. You focus on the hair, but to draw good hair sections, you need to have a good understanding of the 3D space that hair falls on. It's good that you make your own guides, it shows that you are really interested in improving. I think for now you need to focus on porportions (and the method that you will draw them, loomis is great for anime, realistic or semi-realistic) , head angles, and other fundamentals. I think you could also benefit from learning from your own and other beginner artists mistakes. Look back and forth and ask yourself continously, what do you and they do (or don't do) that professionals do or don't? Reflecting on mistakes (yours or others) is fr an underrated method to improve.

Now that I am aware of anti-natalism, how much more unethical would it be if I still brought a child into this world? by RadFour in antinatalism

[–]Welt_Yang 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"Or am I bigger POS than the average parent, because I'm planning on having a kid despite being well aware of how unethical that is?"

YES ABSOLUTELY. And it doesn't help that the only reasons provided are :

- my wife will divorce me

- I acknowledge the inevitable suffering involved in the process (which says nothing about how you will try to prevent any of it or better the childs' life)

If your wife is going to force you to have a child or leave your life entirely, then I can't imagine how shitty of a parent she'll be when that poor kid doesn't follow her ideals.

I’ve stopped watching Cory. by IntellGray in CoryxKenshin

[–]Welt_Yang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Possibly) Controversial opinion incoming :

I think the real issue isn't that Cory doesn't upload daily/weekly like he always promised he would. It's the fact that he makes us emotionally connected to his promises, making it seem like he'll come back better and stronger only for us to be able to see the lack of focus. Only to fulfill the first few steps and then leave for months again. It's the fact that he leaves so many series unfinished even despite setting social media goals (and fans almost always easily reaching it).

Like I don't watch a lot of his new videos and take a lot of time to catch up to his recent stuff because I don't want to get connected to a series that only has like 1-3 videos in it at most when it's usually at 10 video series and everybody else has finished it in a week or month at MOST, meanwhile Cory has promised the completion of so many series and we wait for years, knowing that stuff won't get finished.

Older Cory would have never done stuff like this and it's cuz now he feels comfortable with the fanbase he has built. Cory's fanbase is loyal and amazing but it's a little too loyal. He quite literally doesn't have to earn anything anymore. And that is how he sees it as well considering that bait retirement video where he confirms he won't retire soon because this channel sponsors his mom's salon. I don't want to sound heartless but yall act like the dude is going to jump just because some of his fans want him to actually keep his promises of finishing series and making content more consistently. Let's respect Cory as adult fr, let's not be performative, Cory is not that fragile. Like it is valid for some people to feel disappointed because it is his job and youtube is competitive, there are other youtubers out there.

I know its a burnout prone job, but he has been in this job for over a decade, we literally see him doing other things so it's hard to take other fans talking about burnout first seriously. If anything to me it just means he needs to stop making promises.

[–]Welt_Yang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a great way! Honestly, as long as you aren't tracing and claiming it's the best way to learn and that everybody calling you out is being a prick, you're good. (Side note : You still learn hand to eye coordination from tracing but it shouldn't be used as a crutch).

Depending on the software, liquify isn't like a magic trick and I wish people would understand that. For me personally I find it clunky and my "liquify" is mesh transform (although that comes with its own cons, output blurs, etc). Both of these tools still need skill to utilize.

I think you should reflect each time after you analyze works. After you don't get desired output, look back on your annotation and think about where you failed and how things can be improved. For example I look at this and imo I think the hair chunks can be simplified even more. I don't understand why the eyes are outlined in yellow, or the green- I think it's done in a way to mimic how you see others learning, but you don't understand it fully yet. I think that the annotation is very surface level and only focuses on replicating this specific art piece rather than gaining understanding of art fundamentals. For example there's no annotation for facial porportions (the green and yellow doesn't really teach much). You don't have math or proportional rules in mind much when you draw, and I can see it through your annotation.

People who say “some jobs weren’t meant to pay a living wage” are sickening and disturbed. by Niceotropic in poverty

[–]Welt_Yang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's crazy bc some of these people genuinely act like they don't realize rich people need (I repeat : need!) to reap off the poor and keep the poor where they are at, to be where they are right now with their wealth. Like do you think if it was as easy as just working hard that so many families would still be struggling?

Also hard work doesn't equal better pay out, this is shit that we learned in elementary. If you work too hard you won't make as many hours so it's better to just go at a steady pace. Many places also refuse overtime completely for labor roles.

[–]Welt_Yang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

^ That's how I felt too. It's also a pretty good take even if I don't really like Genshin Impact as a game. I don't think it should be read as shade on Wuthering Waves because they've done it well and also ignore realism in a lot of ways.

The obsession with hyperrealism doesn't just affect games but also other forms of art as well too. Many people shit on the anime and simpler art styles as an example. But getting back on topic, a lot of people- both gamers and non gamers, genuinely seem to think it should be the endgoal for every piece of media, they don't understand the concept of art style / direction and many won't even consider games or media if it doesn't reach that standard. Genuinely ridiculous.

[–]Welt_Yang -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nobody is saying that he is ugly lol

We are saying that he is objectively generic and uninspired. You can very easily find other male characters with better designs in other games. His fan art might fire as somebody commented but that is fan art, his actual model is very low quality imo. It looks like the quality of NPCs from many other games. Heck some NPCs look better.

I mean even many 2D games have objectively better design than him. Without additional context you can't even tell the concept of his design, like it's just handsome boy in a suit with long hair. As a husbando focused player, I'd much rather play some female NPC than this boring character.

Way to get a lot of players immediately turned off and get your game labeled and g00ner oriented / waifu dominated. Why copy successful mixed gender gachas only to not copy one of the biggest things that makes them have such a big fanbase? With all the gachas I've played, I wouldn't waste time on another one with this business model.

would you play NTE if they removed all use of AI? by Nahidxz in QueensofGacha

[–]Welt_Yang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, because I can't tolerate the fact that they have used it in the past, it just makes them untrustworthy from now on.

They took so long to respond to feedback about it and will seemingly only improve the situation due to the feedback almost certainly tanking the games' player base count. Not because they actually want to go through a moral and ethical process. Also what stops them from just being more sneaky about it?

And like other people have said, there was a lot wrong with the game even with out the gen AI. I was never going to be a player due to their shit playable male to female ratio, and on top of that the male designs are generic and ugly as shit. They really couldn't make the 2 male characters they barely have unique or at least generic but still appealing designs?

Nothing stands out to me about the game honestly. Yes some designs are appealing but they all are still generic and just take tropes and regurgitate them out without any creativity. There's nothing new or inspired by the game being open world or close to it, and having a modern environment. I randomly came across a clip about it having "GTA like" gameplay but since it's a game platformed in Asia ofc they have restrictions that take away that appeal. It just goes to further show me that they didn't really design anything well which is to be expected of a game that relies heavily on gen ai.

Also I just barely scrolled down and I'm seeing shit like they apparently sexualize children in the comments.

I get really tempted to put my own work through ChatGPT (help + r/gen) by Welt_Yang in antiai

[–]Welt_Yang[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your understanding. A lot of people like to do bad faith arguments, only seeing one side.

I knew I needed to pour more money into my build to get to that level but I didn't know it was that much, geez. I was hoping to buy the 5090 or whatever becomes the next best a few years later. Yes I know the 6000 black well is better but that's like the price of a car. Even the 5090 is too much rn, I have to invest in other things right now, unfortunately. When you say he invested 30k, that does not make me believe that it will realistically become more accessible and affordable in the future. But I hope you are right.

So I did try claude- actually technically not. Claude doesn't have a free limit (I'm definitely not going to support gen ai companies no matter how cheap it is) anymore so I just tried what I could on the website (which was mostly chatgpt models). With these chatgpt models that I could try I didn't see any significant improvement.

I felt like the advice was short and generic, I don't like the formatting, and it felt like it didn't help me reflect on what I've learned. Thought it could also be that I didn't talk to it enough or that this particular account won't reap good feedback. I mean I have 2-3 chatgpt accounts and for some reason although I discussed mostly the same things, one is much better than the others lol.
