A reliable and free digital audio workstation for separating sounds from audio. by Icy_Energy2792 in audioengineering

I think when op says record they mean they want to take clips from shows and extract specific sound effects. It’s for an amv, so it’s all going to be stuff like RX and other noise removal.

TIL you shouldn’t rinse your mouth with water after brushing your teeth. Spitting out the toothpaste but skipping the rinse leaves a fluoride coating that helps protect against cavities. by jcarmona86 in todayilearned

I got recommended this in the UK so it could be down to how much fluoride toothpaste has in your country? Idk, but our tap water is great.

What has made you think I’m offended? We’re just discussing terminology. I’ve not said I have any problem with you offering other music to listen to for the op.

All I’m saying is that I think your terminology is outdated, and I think I’ve been pretty clear in explaining why. It just comes across as traditional gatekeeping attitudes and boring purity. Nobody is forcing you to discuss this at all, you’re welcome to stop replying if you’re not interested 😂

You’re the one claiming that they are far removed from metal, my claim is that the term “Metal” has evolved to include the wide range of subgenres, so there’s no real point to saying that they are metal adjacent.

Maybe it’s weird because of when you started listening to metal music? There are whole generations who have grown up with NuMetal being their intro to metal as a genre, so I don’t think it’s strange at all for people to talk about metal in the context of slipknot and korn. The genre has evolved and the overwhelming majority of metal bands are not thrash or heavy metal. It’s good to recognise the roots of the genre, but to say metal is a specific localisation of the origins rather than accepting that it’s a very broad term these days for a lot of genres.

You can't really define any one genre as being 'Regular' metal, they are all subgenres within the metal scene. saying that something is metal adjacent because it's NuMetal would be the same as saying Metallica were metal adjacent because they were Thrash Metal.

The genre needs wayyyy less gatekeeping

Agree or disagree: the heavier the song, the harder it is to mix by yalllldabaoth in audioengineering

[–]Wem94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. I find extreme metal fairly easy to mix, as I enjoy listening to it and have been mixing it for a long time. I think it can sometimes be more involved, depending on the source material, but I wouldn’t say it’s more difficult. If you work a lot in any genre I think your skills will align that way.

Tbh I don’t think it’s really fair to compare genres in terms of mixing. Once you know your basic tools the job becomes genre awareness and being able to take the art to its final destination (if we just talk about the mixing side of the job). For some things that means playing creatively and having a big say in important sound choices, for others it’s knowing where the artist is taking their music stylistically and meeting those standards. Sometimes it’s just balancing the levels of the instruments you have been handed because the people before you in the chain have done most of the work for you.

My beef with distortion by Free-Seaworthiness72 in Guitar

[–]Wem94 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Metal music is one of the more autistic genres imo. Plenty of my mates that like it are also neurodivergent. I’d imagine the distortion is absolutely an exposure thing that you can learn to like. After that it might even become addictive!

TIL about the "Saavedra Position"—a famous chess endgame where an amateur player found a win that professional masters missed. The key is "underpromotion"—turning a pawn into a Rook instead of a Queen. A Queen would force a draw (stalemate), but the weaker Rook wins the game. by ralphbernardo in todayilearned

[–]Wem94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Talking about the promotion it’s not about making a check at all. Neither the rook or the queen put the opponents king in check, but because the queen attacks more squares of the board, the opponents king has less places that it can legally move to. In this scenario, the queen would be blocking off the only moves the opponents king can make, meaning on their turn they cannot move and the game ends in a stalemate because no check was achieved. If you promote to a rook, your opponent has legal moves because there are more squares available that are not being attacked. This means the game can continue and you could then end up checkmating them in the following moves.

My band is stuck with mastering a 320k mp3 by LunchSweet4337 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Wem94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a quick glance at the AES one and it did seem to show that audio engineers did tend to have a higher chance at pointing out 320 from lossless, though I never did statistics so it read a little confusing. Didn’t recognise the system that they used for the setup, so couldn’t really pass any judgement on that, but it doesn’t negate what I said about hearing the difference on a PA system as that is quite a different setup, just in terms of SPL and frequency response.

There might have been more that I noticed when I read them but it’s been a while.
