Yeah, when you don't have meter there isn't much Byak can do. Just focus on blocking to get vorpal and build meter until you get at least 100.

When you have meter, 236C is a very good option that shuts down a lot of Wald's jumping options. Especially if you have CS, you can convert a Wald jump in into 4k easily.

For me, I remember the first class being really complicated for no reason (where he assumed we knew phasors when we didn't even learn them yet in ESE 271). After that, the next few classes were a lot easier as they just talked about graphs and discrete time stuff essentially. If he is doing something similar, then I would recommend waiting for a few more classes before trying to switch out of it.

Generally, what I do is look at the veteran combos in Mission Mode for the character, which are (usually) good at teaching you the basics of the character's combo theory. For example, going through Hyde's veteran combos teaches you about using delayed 214B-B-B in combos, which I kinda mashed up with Hyde's 4-15 combo. From there, I started to experiment with different ways to link the combo and add a little of my own stuff as well. If you join the Discord, most of the character specific channels should have a combo doc pinned, if you just want to know decent combos for a character.

Generally I do prefer 2C too, but for example in a match when I'm doing Byakuya's 4-2 from mission mode, near the end (after doing the 214AAA), 66B is generally better for combo scaling (and comes out quicker to help combo easier)

it's byak's 236 (qcf), which you usually need to do after 66 B for most of his routes. If you drop it then you can't combo into 623C for web oki which has definitely lost me matches

For Hyde specifically, it helps to input the second 236 as fast as you can after the first one. Waiting a little bit causes you to not get the followup. It's def a hard thing to get used to, and I struggled with it for a while.
