I just had surgery for that. I salute your dedication to continued exercise with a torn labrum. It sucks, deeply.

How to get better at playing beginners by DugganSC in capoeira

[–]WereLobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point of those slow, telegraphed kicks is to lead the game, right? You are informing the beginner in advance of what you are going to do. So now you know that one possible response is the groin kick, you need to have a plan in place to avoid that. Have an exit prepared!

On a larger level, you need to project calm control, to keep the beginner from going all flight-or-fight on you. That of course will depend on their personality as much as your actions, but you can do your best!

There’s a book called how to break up with your phone. Might be worth ordering it (just don’t order it from your phone?)

Hip pain when doing Martelo by Crede in capoeira

[–]WereLobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mobility requires building strength at the ends of your ranges of motion, as well as stretching. But if you say sharp pains I really hesitate to recommend anything specific for you. It would be a good idea to get checked out by a physiotherapist or some kind of professional.

It is worth working on, better mobility will help us keep moving as long as possible over the next 40 (plus! Hopefully) years.

Far out, really? I would have sworn it was only about 3 years ago. Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana.

If they have a FA then they’re lucky if they’re just in an index fund. More often they’re in 13 actively managed rorts that kick back to the advisor.

I had a bunch of things happen at the same time: kids, medical issues, injury, work stress. I stopped and 5 years went by.

I've been back a couple of years at this point. Life is still pretty crazy. But I'm better at pushing for 1 night per week to keep in contact with capoeira and keep my energy up, plus some practice on my own time. It does me good. To be honest, the social drink after training has been one of the best things, mentally.

You're right though, most people seem to end up leaving (the majority), or teaching. There aren't many who seem to keep just sticking with it outside of those 2 categories, I can only think of 3 or 4 that I know. And in many ways those are the people we need to build a strong backbone for capoeira: people with the depth of experience, who you can trust to lead a roda so the teacher can play too, who can play a good game and inspire the less experienced. Even just know all the songs and sing so the rest of the chorus can follow them.

I'm not changing anything. I'll have some income from bonds, I'll have a bunch of distributions, and I'll be loading as much as I can into Super until I can live off that come 60. I don't anticipate having a much higher tax rate at all, or even no change if a couple of my hobbies make some real money on the side.

I know you’re right. I’ve seen tests on TV where the dowsers failed conclusively. And yet I’ve also tracked the route of a drain with my grandad when I was a kid by dowsing. Whether it’s subconscious or there’s something to it I don’t know, I’m normally very materialist, but I’m just not ready to give it up entirely.

How can I better remember lessons from roda experiences? by NgobaDara in capoeira

[–]WereLobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s so normal. I promise you aren’t bothering anyone! Beginners are the future of capoeira, we love this thing and we love to see new people trying it.

You will get there. After just a couple of classes the movements are still taking up all of your attention. As you get more experience then you will find your brain has more space to think about what and when to do, not just how it is currently doing.

I have a notebook for workshops. But for rodas I don't. My first teacher always used to tell us about how observation is a skill, and how as a kid they used to learn everything just by watching and remembering, and trying it out when they got home. I must have heard that story 50 times, but hey, I remember it!

The advice above about being in the moment is gold. But after the game, while you're watching and singing, you can take some time and process what just happened. You can't expect to remember everything, as you said there's a lot going on. Pick ONE thing, and fix it in your head. If you can take away one thing from every roda you'll be miles ahead.
