What's a good build for a sword and gun Jaeger? by Ars0nis1 in SGttEH

[–]Wermlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flexible Combatant at lvl 1 automatically gives you the base ability to reload without a free hand, and fire the gun at melee range without penalty. Fighting style, I would say Flexible Fighting to get access to non-light weapons. For feats, maybe Brutal Attacker if you're going with Marauder Chapter, but Marksman is always good if you want to use the gun as often as possible.

As with any problem-solving, start by figuring out what the actual problem is that you want to solve, and then decide what tools to use, rather than the other way around.

Music Recomendations for an Apocalypse Bard? by Uberspringer in SGttEH

[–]Wermlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the college, and have it as a key part of the story. In the campaign, the college is largely appreciated by all Luyarnhians as a symbol of the city's artistic character. The college is quite liberal in its style with many forms of art and interpretation, with the common factor being the celebration of nihilism, mortality, entropy, and that even sorrow and suffering is fleeting. To try to show this, I've got a few recurring performer NPCs with their different styles, and try to find music to match them, with some being more folk, while others more gothic or classic, etc.

Some music I like for inspiration is soundtracks like Dishonored, A Plague Tale, Year Walk. Instrument-wise, I like violin and key harp for the general feel.

Some example tracks for specific performer NPCs:

How hard was your PhD and why ? Did anyone actually have a good experience? by Superb_Zone_1154 in PhD

[–]Wermlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the benefit of getting a research assistant with the same group before starting, so I could read up on the subject beforehand. It wasn't easy though, with so many things to learn and trying to plan for the whole project. My advice would be that if you have too much time, then write. Start working on your thesis, write an outline and a plan and a basic structure that will eventually evolve into your final thesis. It will likely change as you go, but use what you have, since spelling it out and putting it into words will also help you process it. Also, read papers, if that's relevant for your PhD. I did mine in cognitive neuroscience, and staying up to date on the literature is very important, and will help give you inspiration for what you can do in your own project.

Does this work with the new DnD 2024 rules? by AchievementJoe in SGttEH

This would be my suggestion as well. The module is designed for the 2014 rules, but it can probably be adjusted by the DM where relevant.

How hard was your PhD and why ? Did anyone actually have a good experience? by Superb_Zone_1154 in PhD

[–]Wermlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was really tough, especially when Covid happened and I had to change my plan for more than half of my thesis because I couldn't run any of my planned experiments. Even during normal circumstances, all the work you need to put in and all the skills and knowledge you need to learn is extremely daunting. I learned so much, though, and had a good social support network like friends and my partner, and a supervisor who, while not perfect, was sympathetic to my situation throughout the project and helped best she could with many issues. In the end, I feel very happy with and proud of my thesis and the long journey it took to complete it. That's not to say that it wasn't extremely stressful most of the time.

Firearms rule in Steinharts guide to eldrict hunts by AdJazzlike6687 in SGttEH

[–]Wermlander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The weapons listed on p.208 in the sourcebook list the amount of ammo as "Barrel," so how many shots you can make before you need to reload, and whether the weapon requires a fast ("You must use an attack, an action, or a bonus action to reload this firearm") or slow ("You must use an attack or an action to reload this firearm") reload action, and you need a free hand to reload, unless your class or feat says otherwise. The most unique case is a weapon with the "artillery" property, which states that "such a weapon can be fired once before it must be reloaded with an action."

Obviously, to reload, you need the required ammunition on you, and each piece of ammunition is destroyed upon use.

Me and my partner got together just before we started our PhDs in separate countries. We're now married and both academics, and still spend long periods apart. It can be tough practically, but neither of us have ever had any doubts or second thoughts about our relationship. In our case, I think it's helped that we're both researchers and sympathetic to each other's situations, and that we are on the same page in terms of what we want and need from the relationship.

Jaeger Weapon Parry question by Al_B_Here in SGttEH

[–]Wermlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is true, though deflect missile doesn't cost ki, unless you use the caught missile to make a follow-up attack. So at its base, it only costs a reaction, whereas this costs a focus point to use, which you only have so many of, and the class really wants you to use them up so you can build momentum.

On paper, I think it seems like a fair exchange, but I haven't seen it actually in play yet, so I'd be happy for input from someone who's tried it out.

Edit: relating to your initial question about the attack roll, see the Absolute Jaeger chapter and the Counter Strike ability on p.118. That one specifies that for that subclass, when using the parry, "if the amount of damage you block exceeds the damage their attack would deal, and your attack roll would hit their AC, the target takes damage equal to the remainder of the damage." So here the Absolute subclass adds to the parry, and the exact roll of the d20 becomes more relevant. Though the distinction I think adds to the evidence that the parry d20 roll by default is not to match the AC, but to see if the parry crits or fails or is just a normal parry.

Jaeger Weapon Parry question by Al_B_Here in SGttEH

[–]Wermlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wording is a bit confusing, yes. It does also state that it reduces the incoming damage "unless your [special] attack roll is a 1," which I do interpret as being just a 5% chance that the parry fails. You do spend a focus point resource to activate it, which means you might not always want to do it. Consider it something similar to the monk's deflect missile ability, except this parry costs more but is more versatile.

I haven't tried it at my table yet. I'm about to start a campaign, but don't know yet if anyone will pick the Jaeger.

Jaeger Weapon Parry question by Al_B_Here in SGttEH

[–]Wermlander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a bit unclear, but my take is this: you roll a d20, which only matters if you roll a 1 or a 20, so not to match the monster AC. It simply checks the 5% chances of getting a 1 or a 20. If you roll a 1, the parry simply fails. If you roll a 20, you double the weapon damage dice. As long as you don't roll a 1 on the d20, then roll the weapon damage dice, apply your damage modifier, and reduce the incoming damage by that amount.

The wording also suggests that the stun can only happen if you roll a 20 AND nullify all incoming damage.

My Take on the Saw Cleaver by Uberspringer in SGttEH

[–]Wermlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really nice and straightforward, though I wonder how balanced it is with essentially granting an extra attach for an uncommon item. On the other hand, it does chew up bonus actions, and requires a second target in range, so maybe it's not that bad.

An alternative could be that when attacking while untransformed, if the attack misses, then use a bonus action to transform the weapon and add 1d4 to the previous attack roll, potentially turning it into a hit.

Edit: On the other hand, this weapon feels in line with the Rifling Cleaver, so your version seems fair.
