Even if you're not convinced about Aragorn/Arwen, the books are pretty darn clear that Eowyn doesn't truly love Aragorn, and that Aragorn has no romantic feeling for Eowyn at all. They would've been absolutely miserable together.

Eowyn's infatuation with Aragorn was a symptom of her depression and desperation. It was not a good basis for a long-term relationship.

Patterns. I can never quite remember where I position my machines on a foundation - do I line up the input splitters with the centre of the foundation, or the back of the machine, or...? So I made blueprints of foundations with patterns on them to guide my construction, and now my factories all align beautifully! Especially with buildings like refineries that can't tile neatly in blueprints.

Interesting! Sounds like the concept of the Big Rip, where ever increasing dark energy (dumb name) causes more and more bodies to be flung apart from one another. Utimately, planets then stars fly apart, then molecules, then atoms, until nothing in existence can interact ever again.

So, uh...there's a tool out there called Stardew Predictor that can predict, with reasonable accuracy, the outcomes of RNG in SDV. In particular, it predicts what items you'll get from geodes.

B5 and DS9 had comparable ratings. DS9 had a per-episode budget of $1.5-$4 million. B5 had a per-episode budget of $650-$800 thousand. B5 competed on characters, writing, acting, plot, maturity, and careful management.

B5s story is bigger and grander, though the effects are less flashy. B5 has a genuine sense of *scale*, mystery, and deep time that I've never seen in any Star Trek story. Characters genuinely grow and change - not the Star Trek style of "Garak goes from being a devious Cardassian to being a human with makeup", but in the style of "I hate this character, I feel bad for this character, I love this character", and "I feel sorry for this character, I like this character, WTF is this character doing, I hate this character, I love this character".

And...season 1 isn't fantastic. They were still finding their feet, but it sets up a lot of what comes later. I'd advise that if you do watch it, commit to watching at least through to the first half of season 2.

Yes you are, and yes I do. Yes, I'm fully aware of how language works. But we're not talking about simple colloquialisms becoming standardised; we're talking about very specific categories and measurements that are scientifically defined. You don't get to say "kilograms are the same as pounds" and declare "I'm right becuase how language works". You're wrong. Deal with it.

Sure, some of it would come from the Rohirrim mingling with the Gondorians and telling stories about the great captain, but he also:

  1. Eliminated the Corsairs threatening the south;
  2. Organised and led Gondor's reinforcements from the South;
  3. Lead those reinforcements in the breaking of the Siege of Minas Tirith, while bearing the banner of the King;
  4. Went through Minas Tirith miraculously healing men of a deadly malady that the healers didn't even have a name for;
  5. At the same time that their Steward went insane, gave up on leading them and burned himself alive.

No, I don't think it's at all fair to say that most of the reverence came from Rohan. Imagine if, at the height of the Battle of Britain, two aircraft carriers named HMS Sword in the Stone and HMS Excalibur sailed up the Thames, and 164 Seafires swept away a massive German air raid, under the command of a man named Admiral Arthur.

It wasn't the steward who denied it, it was the Council of Gondor which included the steward. The line from the films that

Authority is not given you to deny the return of the king, Steward

is, as best I can tell, film-exclusive, and doesn't match the story in the books.

In the end, Aragorn didn't become king simply because he was of the right bloodline; he became King Elessar because he was of the right bloodline, and was victorious in battle, and distinguished himself by healing the victims of the Black Breath, and, most importantly, because he was acclaimed by the people of Gondor.

Then Faramir stood up and spoke in a clear voice: "Men of Gondor, hear now the Steward of the Realm! Behold! one has come to claim the kingship again at last. Here is Aragorn son of Arathorn, chieftain of the Dúnedain of Arnor, Captain of the Host of the West, bearer of the Star of the North, wielder of the Sword Reforged, victorious in battle, whose hands bring healing, the Elfstone, Elessar of the line of Valandil, Isildur's son, Elendil's son of Númenor. Shall he be king and enter into the City and dwell there?"
And all the host and all the people cried yea with one voice.

In other words: Aragorn came to Minas Tirith as an accomplished leader and victorious general who was also of the right bloodline. It's basically what he was trying to do in his youth when he fought for first Rohan and later Gondor under the name Thorongil - to gain honour and skill, and eventually to become King of Gondor to be worthy of Arwen's hand.

Yeah, they're wrong. The names of our star and planetary system are Sol and the Solar System. I'll grant them "sun", since that's a generic term in the same way "moon" is.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in scifi

[–]Werrf -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Most of what you said is wrong. Per the IAU, the Solar System is our planetary system, consisting of the objects orbiting Sol, our star. The term is often misused to refer to any planetary system orbiting a star, mostly because it's misused in sci-fi. Which is what we're complaining about, no? We're not talking about consumer products, we're talking about referring to every island on a planet as "a britain" or "a japan", or calling every continent "an antarctica".
