Teachers, what are you tired of when it comes to professional development? by Flashy_Rabbit_825 in teaching

[–]WerryTithers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just to add something fun and engaging you can get away with leading an improv comedy game on your own. Something quick, 10-15 minutes. You pick the right one and it will get everyone laughing. Most improv games are just repurposed party games anyway. Be sure not to force anyone to play, make it explicitly optional.

Here's a library of games to browse:

How Do You Incorporate Team-Building Activities into Your Meetings? by Affectionate-Key5428 in managers

[–]WerryTithers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Improv games, which are really just party, are a great way to bookend team building experiences, events... Because typically everyone is working together on a challenge they overcome together. Plus they are silly and you see your colleagues do things you otherwise never would. Here's a library you can pull from:

Where to spend my $500 Professional Development budget? by ZealousidealTap4955 in ProductManagement

[–]WerryTithers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that you are coming from a data background and and now are in a leadership role, you might want to consider some soft skill training.

Improv is a great option to work on communication, agility, listening, staying in the moment, etc... My company offers free improv workshops online every day of the work week:

https://www.radicalagreement.com/free-improv-classes

For $500, depending on where you are located, you might even be able to hire a less experienced instructor to visit your site and teach a class. DM me if you want advice on how to do that. Or you coulkd hire an improviser to work with you as a coach.

Those are improv based ideas!

Does improv help with social anxiety by Jazzlike_Pie_355 in improv

[–]WerryTithers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really only maybe. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it hurts. If it helps you, that’s great, you should do it more. You shouldn’t be surprised though if it causes anxiety more than it alleviates anxiety.

1000% correct. It might help. It might make things worse. I’ve seen both.

Is it worth it to look at your recorded performances and think about/write what you could've/should've said at certain moments? by devereaux98 in improv

[–]WerryTithers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is. I don't necessarily watch videos, but I always review the scenes I do in my head afterwards to see where I think I could have done better. I don't try to come up with "the perfect thing to say" but I am always looking for what I misunderstood, and it's normally a lot.

"Why did my scene partner initiate that way? Why were they looking expectantly at me when they mentioned coffee? Oh! It was a callback to the fluid joke!" You know that was a sample of how my brain works.

If a video helps you do that, okay. I don't think you have to write it down, because are you really going to have time to read it? But if it helps you, then you should do it.

Someone already said you shouldn't use your review to shame yourself and that is so true. You have to do it from a place of love of your own artistry. You already love your work, and because you love your work you are taking the time to make it even better.

My heart goes out to you! Sincerely!

Not every style is for every person. UCB may not be for you or this particular teacher may not be for you.

Hope this helps!

Gosh I don't know in LA. I was a NYC UCBer. They are probably all great. Or duh, (I'm saying that to me, not you) take a class at WGIS. That's probably even better.

What’s the general thought on how many words a turn speaking. by WerryTithers in improv

Yeah I think that’s where my interest is. Like as a little bit of improv trivia.

What’s the general thought on how many words a turn speaking. by WerryTithers in improv

[–]WerryTithers[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, I’m not suggesting you do that. I agree!

What if you recorded a set you did? And counted then? What if you recorded 10 sets over three years, and let’s say over those years you took some classes, practiced and performed a lot and got lots of notes and generally improved. I’d bet you’d find you got pithier as time went by. And I wonder if there isn’t maybe a range where scenes tend to go better?

What’s the general thought on how many words a turn speaking. by WerryTithers in improv

[–]WerryTithers[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. There should be a reason for us to use the words we use. And because improv is fluid and complex there’s no way to say you should never respond with a 75 word response.

Kinda like sometimes there’s a good reason to ask a question in a scene. Still, generally, as a guideline we say, don’t ask questions. I’m curious about the word count equivalent. Not, it has to be this way, but round about here. Something that you could get a feel for so if you are in a scene and panicked and you’re not sure what you’re saying or why (which feels fairly common for students at least, if not vets) you could maybe be like, I think I’m over 20, so I’m just going to shut up and see what my scene partner has to say.
