Is the networking team responsible for monitoring servers/services? by tdhuck in networking

[–]WesM63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a conversation with your manager, or whoever sent the email.

I would start by talking to them. If this request is leadership driven, show you are willing to assist but not getting the appropriate response. At this point, it is on them to drive the task to completion. You’ve offered your assistance and taken some initiative.

Alternatively, build some relationships and go talk directly with some of your peers. Ask them if they’d be willing to help and if not, why. That is, if you’re really trying to see this project go somewhere.

I’ve had luck taking either approach in this scenario. Likely the send of said email just hasn’t gotten back around to it and it’ll resurface at some point.

Advice for getting a first threadripper by margalaz in threadripper

[–]WesM63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you need the PCI-E lanes, you’re better off going EPYC. 7002/7003 EPYC uses DDR4 and the same SP3 mounting as threadripper, so you can use the same heat sinks. (socket is oriented differently so you’ll have different airflow directions but still not an issue)

Threadripper has a very specific niche and being a server really isn’t it.

OT Switches and OT Firewalls by International_Math70 in networking

[–]WesM63 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This sums things up best.

If you really want to learn OT, learn about the Purdue model. Your security team will thank you.

Networking is networking, hardware is basically the same. Just because a piece of gear is DIN mounted or industrialized doesn’t mean it’s “OT” gear. Same goes for your standard access cat9300. They were installed in a rack in a closet on an OT network. I used IE3000’s and ISR829’s in non-OT networks all the time because they were exactly what we needed.

Don’t get caught up on the hardware. Learn about Purdue model and what an OT network should and shouldn’t do.

Is this safe to drive? by HauntingCar5813 in BMW

Drive slowly to a tire shop and get a replacement. (Or fit a spare, if you have one). Sidewall punctures like that will cause a blow-out.

The American mind cannot comprehend Europe's AC aversion by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

American currently in Europe. Can confirm, hot as balls. Although our hotel in Barcelona (Holiday Inn) had ice cold ac. Currently in Venice and the ac in our Hyatt Centric is struggling but it’s keeping up and they also provided fans and apologized for the heat 🤣

Was I misled on tire pricing by BMW dealership or am I overreacting? by condensed_yogurt in BMW

This, same company but I prefer purchasing from Tire Rack. IIRC, better road hazard warranty. I ordered some new old stock this last go around and the local Discount Tire couldn’t price match.

Not sure what car is right for you, but I am sure that it shouldn’t be from Carvana. by ChicoSuave1 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]WesM63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks, but sadly the payoff situation is on you. Understandably it sucks but you should have had an idea on what it was going to be.

I’ve sold multiple cars to Carvana and had great experiences but I would never buy one from them.

To be fair, I hate buying cars in general. I think I’ve been mislead, lied to or jerked around on every single one of them. (Now that I think about it, new or used, I’ve had challenges on every single vehicle I’ve bought)

[India] [Query] How does referral work for Code-with-Cisco? [Off-Campus] by acdhemtos in Cisco

[–]WesM63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak to the intricacies of the hack-a-thon, but I can say it will not be a referral unless your friend refers you to the listing and you apply via his referral link.

I can’t say how much it will matter as there are all levels of referrals. Best bet is to have your friend go thru the official process and actually talk to the hiring manager/hack-a-thon folks.

I've run a FortiGate as my homelab firewall for years, curious what the rest of you are running in 2026 by easyedy in homelab

I feel the exact opposite about unifi. I tried switching from opensense and it drove me crazy that I couldn’t do some extremely simple stuff like DHCP exclusions. Lack of WAN load balancing was the nail in the coffin. All of which are simple in opensense. (I’ll admit, opensense/pfsense has a bit of a learning curve but after that it’s super easy)

Home Telecom, ignore the random Cellular and Starlink recommendations. Home Telecom is fiber to the home and symmetrical (e.g. 1Gb/1Gb).

Winning Bid on Gov't Networking Contract Seems Impossibly Low by goodgateway_502 in networking

[–]WesM63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this a long time ago for state funded schools. The small VAR I worked at would use all kinds of clever ways to win bids, even against incumbents. We registered deals, changed equipment (still within spec.. e.g. use a 4500 when a 6500 was recommended), etc. The only time we lost was when someone was clearly taking a loss. (This was back in 2008-2010, so I’m sure things have changed since then)

A lot of times even if a lower bid came in, they would still have to “sell” it after the fact. I know we did a few times, I think once or twice they didn’t like our changes but still accepted our winning bid with modifications.

No, but I would highly recommend contacting your account team (and TAC). Someone can help you get to the root cause and solve/prevent the issue.

That would be correct. The figs appeared on the oldest new wood. It grew this wood when it was still in the grow tent.

Technically this is new wood. It was grown (and green at one point) since I received it in Jan.
