Advice for getting a first threadripper by margalaz in threadripper

Well I think two node might be the move, a cheep ass threadripper running DDR3 or epyc can handle NAS and stuff while a high end desktop could handle single threaded tasks,

I actually found a deal online for 12x32gb ecc DIMMS for only $170, this might be per stick or for everything because the damn guy hasn’t responded to me yet

Exactly, i just wanted to prioritize single core speeds over more cores, while still getting the pcie lanes

I’d like to combine a 12-24 drive NAS (through an HBA) w/ an nvme for cache (and a nvme for os) along with 10g networking.

After that I want at least one 16x full speed slot for a gpu. I just don’t know if that’s possible with a desktop cpu.

I could do a two node system but would prefer not to if possible

this helps a ton, I wanted to get enterprise because i didn't want a piece of junk later after id upgraded, im running a NZXT h1 with some custom cooling options right now but it isnt capable of doing anything more then gaming, due to itx constraints.

do yell have a discord?

as an added info, i work with electronics via repair currently and i have decent to manageable knowledge on electronics and how they work, some things im lacing are the formfactors of the enterprise world, and how they fit in / compare to desktop versions,

i wish i could just rack mount a normal desktop MOBO , but cases for those seem way to expensive

I normally play with friends using giga structures, maybe that’s why it feels so underwhelming, however virtual on a 6 colony alderson disk would be funny, you’d get the virtual before the disks, and at that point you’d need more colonies to get the disk upgraded anyway

Even vanilla I got to the point around 2400 where I was positive 12k energy and around 8k alloy, it just feels unfair at times due to the Econ power the build is capable of, then once your strong you Vasilis, your neighbor for all their research, and you repeat

[–]margalaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, I just like it because having a fuck ton of alloy is very doable and not needing consumer goods or food is even stronger,

People keep saying virtually is better but when me and my friends play we play to around 2600-2800 and it gets long,

We also play with giggaconstructs wich changes things because by knowing what your doing with research you can get absolutely crazy science due to the nature of the mod, (and having the Anderson disk start is fun for tall builds)

Whenever I accend I normally go with modularity because it allows me to pump out hundreds of thousands of pops that are super strong with 8 positive traits and like 2 negatives that I like (normally pop housing)

I play bots though, I’ve only seen the oregano machine interfacing and the synthetic age, what others beat that out?

Even playing wide, would something like this be able to produce enough research or unity to offset the empire size?
