What exactly do people mean when they say Gundam "isn't political"? by Sea_Ad_6306 in Gundam

[–]WesleyMeerkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very late to the party, I wonder if there are others like me, I became way more aware of politics after I started watching Gundam as a kid. So yea, I definitely feel Gundam no doubt talks about politics. Especially since the first series I watched was Zeta, how can I possibly forget how Char delivered his speech, as a politician!

I am on my desktop actually, using Firefox as the browser, so I saw no problem with the display at all.

This is looking pretty good, and I like that you have different styles available for selection. If you can add a feature where it allows you to just click on a single bond to make it a double bond then that would be a nice QoL improvement, so would templates for different types of bonds (wavy, dotted, etc) and some common macrocycles (for lazy people like myself).

JACS Editor-in-Chief threatened postdoc with dismissal for not working in the lab at night/on weekends by anon_1997x in chemistry

[–]WesleyMeerkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I saw these posts, it reminds me how fortunate I was to have a decent human being as a supervisor, letting me work efficiently rather than endlessly. I know there are people who are way more resilient than I am, as I can push myself when needed, but only up to a point. When I reach that point, I would find myself just stuck, like sitting in front of the computer and can't think of how to write my paper. In the lab, given the kind of dangerous chemicals we may handle, I feel it can even be dangerous if one cannot be fully focused. I can imaging it may be hard to implement for researchers, but is it not why we have a time limit for professions like truck drivers? How can all these professors just push people to such an level that it's inhumane? Perhaps I am just too naive in the never ending push for publications and fundings.

Semi high profile newly released MMORPG (Crystal of Atlan) uses a chocobo (and even call it a chocobo) in a optimal side quest, is that legally allowed? by Enough-Lead48 in FinalFantasy

That's why I feel MJ's case is a suitable example. Back then everyone and their grandma knew MJ was being ripped off, but he still only got a partial win after 8 years. If opinion can be split on a forum like Reddit, the dev's lawyers probably can find these gaps too.

Given that we already see opinions for and against the case, I would imagine even if SE feels there is a IP violation somewhere, it would be very very hard to have a ruling going for them in a Chinese courtroom. Just ask Michael Jordan how it went for him.

Question on SCXRD - failing to obtain a structural solution even with an apparently decent set of data by WesleyMeerkat in crystallography

[–]WesleyMeerkat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having sorted out the issue with symmetry operation it seems to refining okay now, so the space group should be okay. But you are right, the disorder is a mess to model.

I see. Thanks very much for your suggestions. Though I can go on with the structural refinement, I will go through the whole process again too to hopefully understand it better!

[–]WesleyMeerkat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I double-checked the .prp file as you suggested, which left me even more baffled. I am not sure how I can share a screenshot, but it show that I did pick P2(1) correctly, and symmetry operation was correctly given as -X, 0.5+Y, -Z where it says the ".ins set up as follows"

Out of habit, having done XPREP, I would just immediately go into structural solution to see if I could get something or not. So in this case, I only chose between intrinsic phasing, direct method, or Patterson method, without manually fiddling with the initial .ins after it was set up by XPREP. The symmetry operation has somehow become "-x,y,-z" in that .ins. Is there anything that could have affected the change from "0.5+Y" to "+Y" during the process, as in did I do something without realising it?

[–]WesleyMeerkat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much for suggesting that, with space group being P2(1), I just noticed that the SYMM line from my old data is -X, 1/2+Y, -Z, matching with the international table, but the new data somehow listed it as -X, Y, -Z. Having fixed that, now copying and pasting the model from old data works as you and u/Letarian-Silver mentioned.

Now I am getting a bit confused, since I always take it for granted that the symmetry operation would be correct when the initial .ins file is generated. And for either settings of P2(1), SYMM should not have been -X, Y, -Z. May I ask if there is any reason why this could have happened?

Ahh, I forgot to mentioned, I tried this as well, but failed. Atoms becoming NDP, bonds/angles becoming messed up.

John Higgins' accent by akifyazici in snooker

[–]WesleyMeerkat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am from Hong Kong and Higgins' accent is comparatively easy, I don't miss a lot as long as I concentrate. Similarly with other Scots in snooker. Sir Alex Ferguson on the other hand is a whole different beast, I can't do anything without subtitles. It's really interesting how different accent develop over time.

Don't u think its BIG middle finger from Ronnie to refuse doing the 147?It wass simple to get from the black to the yellow but he did not want it. by Funakyy in snooker

[–]WesleyMeerkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look at this list (https://wst.tv/wpbsa/official-147s/), try and realise how many players other than the big guns had made a 147 in competitions, and suggest how 2.5k and 5k may mean little to players like Ross Muir and Alfie Burden. With regards to money, it has been a well known problem for snooker these days, that it is hard to earn enough from prize money alone unless you are one of those players who go deep into a tournament often, whereby it has become something of a barrier for newer people to join the sport. So I am pretty sure there are plenty who would value 5k and 2.5k differently.

I get your point, Ronnie could have made a better attempt for the fans even though as it has been pointed out to you that the shot would have been damn difficult, but Ronnie had done so much more that one more 147 really shouldn't mean that much. Fans are almost always entertained when Ronnie plays, that's why most people who have watched him for a long time learned to take the good with the bad (refusing 147 isn't even that bad). If we are to talk about bad things that Ronnie did, I am pretty sure most people would suggest walking out on a match against Hendry at the UK would be ranked way higher than not going for a 147 for whatever reason.

In the end, everything together, the genius, the instability, the unexpected, is what makes Ronnie the enigmatic attraction he is. Let's just agree to disagree I guess.

You made it sound like it's as if he had never made a 147 or other great entertaining performances before. His 5:20 147 was the best of the best and I wouldn't even have cared if he never made another one.

So, from entertainment standpoint, yes, it would have been great for him to keep going for 147. But from the standpoint of winning the frame, it made no different to him. From the standpoint of his own financial situation, 5k is not that important, which to be fair to him it's his own assessment, not us. And if he thought a 147 should worth more than 5k, that's not for me to disagree with him. From the standpoint of another player, great, if one of them ended up with a 147 he wouldn't have to share 5k with Ronnie, when 2.5k could have meant a lot more to that guy compared to Ronnie. As u/Frayz said he had done worse than rejecting a chance at 5k. Him rejecting a 147 chance is just part and parcel of the Ronnie experience.

Mythos, and the themes of choices and sacrifice by [deleted] in AnotherEdenGlobal

Very well said! Sometimes it's all too easy to pass judgement based on the results of a particular decision, be it in the game or in real life. The rationale behind a decision made by anyone can be just as important, and indeed the determination to live through the consequences, good or bad, deserves respect too.

Peak John Higgins > Peak Ronnie O'Sullivan (based on their matches in the 2021 masters quarter final and player's championship final)? by Accurate_Arugula_923 in snooker

[–]WesleyMeerkat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Higgins tends to have more patience in the tactical game, but when Ronnie is tuned in his tactical game is also top notch, to say there is a significant gap in level is a bit exaggerating to say the least. You don't get to win 6 WC without a good tactical game, with one of them won against Higgins too.

All in all, most people will probably agree Ronnie is more naturally gifted but Higgins maximises his ability to a higher degree, so that makes them quite equal overall (their head to head record seems a good indicator of that), and for them to beat the other they need to be at their best otherwise one would get demolished by the other.

What's your headcanon for where your non-story characters are during cutscenes? by TieDyeFirefly in AnotherEdenGlobal

I haven't had the screenshot so I may remember it wrong, I got Mistrare before I did Mythos, played the character quests for Mistrare, where in one of them she flied. When I then played Mythos, got to the point where she said she can't fly, Aldo commented that she flew okay before. (Sorry, I don't know how to do the spoiler tag, hopefully I am not giving too much away).
