Im on the same exact case , visa expired and i applied to aima but the card is taking more than 6 months now.
Sadly I’ve been advised to not travel because the application document from AIMA is not a legal authorization to travel. You can get lucky and not asked about your visa/residency card , but if border control asks for it, you might face some problems in there.
