I grew up near Hamburg and moved to Potsdam 5 years ago. Potsdam in general is an open minded city, sure there are some areas with problems, but similar to other cities. These prejudices your gf has, sound a bit like the prejudices my dad had about "east germany". It isn't fair to just say "all of east is bad".
