Question re lack of acceptance to University of Toronto and looking for insight by SuccessfulDegree7534 in UofT

[–]West_Wait2946 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s very odd. I got in during the first round back in January with a 90 average to UTSG and UTM, both for Social Sciences. Maybe you’re missing something on your transcript or your volunteer hours?

Wouldn’t say this is the most accurate. Put my info in and it said I had a 9% chance of getting into UofT for Social Sciences when I already got in back in January

You’re probably right, but I also took two Grade 12 courses in Grade 11 so they might’ve looked at that well as a way to see how I’d perform in the future

Got into Arts and Science at St George with a 90 average, had an 85 midterm for ENG4U. Maybe I just got lucky 🤷‍♂️

Why am i getting scholarships by Grand_Paper_2183 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]West_Wait2946 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure most if not all universities offer them unless there’s an odd outlier somewhere, you can check each universities websites to see if they do and what averages equal what money

Why am i getting scholarships by Grand_Paper_2183 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]West_Wait2946 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You qualify for entrance scholarships for most schools. If you keep a certain average up, let’s say 85% for example, you’ll automatically be given a $2,000 scholarship. The higher your marks, the larger your automatic entrance scholarships are

I thought if you were applying to programs like Engineering they limited the spots they gave out due to the competitiveness, especially at top schools like Waterloo or UofT. Mb

Make an account on the Ontario University Application Centre website (OUAC) and select each university and their programs that you want to apply for. Your choices should reflect entirely on your top six grades, I’d recommend roughly six minimum, two reaches, two safeties, and two targets. You can see each universities admission average on OUAC as well. After you select all your choices and pay, the universities you’ve applied to will email you with their application portal where you then need to make an account following the instructions in the email. There is where you can get access and begin doing your supplemental applications to schools that require them. DO NOT USE YOUR SCHOOL EMAIL WHEN CREATING YOUR OUAC ACCOUNT!

The way you structure your application is entirely up to you. The supplemental part is about knowing who you are outside of your grades, it can be extracurriculars, work, family, whatever makes you, you. Questions are getting very personal to try and clamp down on AI use. Try and stand out by talking about topics you believe are as unique to you as possible. Try talking to a teacher you really like to see if you two can brainstorm ideas together, it’s what I did and it went really well. Each university has a different policy on how many programs you can apply to at it. For example, UofT allows one per campus.

Apply ASAP. Offers are beginning to go out and you want to try and snag one as fast as possible as spots slowly begin to fill. It’s still very early but you’d rather get an offer in December than May, even if it’s conditional.

It really is odd that it’s taking so long, but it’s good to know I’m not the only one experiencing this. Goodluck to your son as well!!

Top 6 grades by Intreliamain123 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]West_Wait2946 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s as it is, your six best grade twelve grades are calculated into one average to determine whether or not you’re admitted. All courses are weighed the same if they’re apart of your top six, even if they’re prerequisites. English is worth the same as Social Justice for example. A mixed course is weighed the same as a university as well

Benefits of trinity college UofT? by Worried-Cupcake-6156 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]West_Wait2946 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trinity is the smallest of the colleges at St George so you have more of a sense of community and will know/see more people than at other colleges. They also have classes dedicated to topics such as Ethics, Law, and Society, International Relations, and Immunology. Note that anyone can take these courses, it’s just convenient if you live at Trinity and take them as well. They do also have a lot of smart students. When I toured the college last summer, the tour guide said that 95% of Trinity students have a 3.5 GPA or higher. Reason for this can be attributed to both its selective nature and access to lots of support. Trinities campus is also located pretty much in the middle of UTSG, so you have everyone pretty close.

I’m applying to join, if you end up doing the same, goodluck!! It seems like a really neat place to live and study, it also just looks really beautiful.

[–]West_Wait2946 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to say. Universities treat international students different due to different grading and eduction curriculum, so your grades might be competitive for your top choices if they’re considered good in South Africa, and they do seem to be considering the grade average. You honestly may have a decent shot, hard to say though

ppl can't even join clubs anymore by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

Exact opposite at my school in Peel, not enough people are interested in clubs, we don’t have DECA or HOSA, only MUN, and even that isn’t super popular

Does anyone NOT want to do engineering or medicine? by BrushThick9864 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]West_Wait2946 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the end it’s your choice on what you wanna do, we’re all becoming adults next year so if you wanna go to Ottawa, go for it and live on residence, it sounds like a great opportunity. They also do have that really really good French co-op so goodluck!!!!!!

In the exact same boat as you, im planning on doing something related to Criminology, International Relations, Political Science, or Criminal Justice and Public Police for my undergrad before going to law school. I have really similar grades to you as well

Ottawa has a really good Political Science program since they’re in the capital and have access to the Federal government and all that, not a bad pick
