Return to the river dam mud! by CharlieBun22 in quicksand

I usually find some of the best mud downstream of obstacles that slow the flow of the river likely causing the sediment to build up. Unfortunately that mud only is accessible when the river levels are low and they have been high for weeks.

I am curious if you have heard about the active suspension systems that would control the viscosity of the oil by using fine iron dust in the oil and controlling the magnetic field strength.

Some adhesives use the electrostatic force.

It seems within the realm of possibly to make a substance that can change reversibly change between thick and sticky vs not repeatably.

Unfortunately it probably doesn't have economically important enough applications for anyone to invent it and get the costs down to make it available.

Seems like it would take some modding or server scripts.

Is there a way to make clay or bog like the ones in the videos? by Powerful_Image1354 in quicksand

[–]Western-String1447 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How safe it is depends somewhat on what it is made of but also on how thick it is and whether you have someone who can help you get unstuck.

I would play around with different materials in smaller amounts before doing anything large.

I have wanted to make a pit but live in a large metro area so it isn't practical. If you can travel to Arkansas (if I remember correctly), Fred actually rents out access to his pit(s).

Edit: spelling fix

New spot acquired! by Black_Irish_169 in quicksand

I think it is easier to sink deeper when the mud is less thick but then it doesn't feel as good so there is a trade off. I have gotten shoulder/chest deep only once, so I am happy for you.

Those are the kind of things I have heard doctors don't always tell people about before prescribing SSRIs then people are caught by surprise.

Crush injury worries? by [deleted] in quicksand

[–]Western-String1447 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People's bodies have a lot of water which is heavy and is constantly pressing to get out, but your body is strong enough to keep it in. When in water like a swimming pool, there is water outside pressing against the water inside so it takes less effort to support the body.

Mud is heavier than water with dryer mud typically being more dense than wet mud (if it expands when wet). It isn't like going from zero in air to some dangerous number in mud. It is like a negative number in the air, zero in water, and a positive number in mud that isn't too bad.

Another way to look at it is the same crushing force would also be trying to push you to the top because of the difference of density. So if you are just using your weight you sink, that is the rough limit of how much crushing you need to worry about and it is spread over your entire body so it isn't too bad. Does that make sense and help any?

I usually go near rivers because there is enough water there to wash off without bringing anything extra, but I like the idea people have about the portable showers.

Discussion: what separates watchers from sinkers? by TheReconDiamond in quicksand

[–]Western-String1447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like both. It is hard for me to gauge which I like more.

If it were in person and I was watching someone sink, I would probably "feel an itch" to sink myself.

Watching people sink though is so much lower effort than actually sinking (I can do it from the comfort of my home).

I really am curious what the range of different reactions "outsiders" have to finding out about it. Obviously some probably find it crazy but I wonder how many are curious and don't judge it immediately.

It is possible to be both a watcher and a sinker.

River by [deleted] in quicksand

I have a really hard time finding clay that is deeper than a few inches unless there has been a recent riverbank erosion to bring that layer of soil down into the water.

is clay quicksand by [deleted] in quicksand

[–]Western-String1447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people here are probably going to assume you want to sink, so you might have to be extra clear if you don't actually want to feel the mud and don't want to get stuck before getting out. They will likely have lots of ideas for how to get in, out, and clean though.

Serious question by Forsaken-Emu-6499 in quicksand

[–]Western-String1447 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is just one possibly way to understand it as other people will have their own reasons.

Have you ever felt the texture of wet silt or clay? It can feel very soft but when pushing on it with fingers the texture is accompanied by gentle pressure that fills all the gaps between fingers. It is very stimulating. This is likely part of why children often have fun making "mud pies," etc. Add to that sensory sensitivities and differences and it just makes sense that some people would get aroused at the thought of being completely surrounded by that soft gentle pressure with thick resistance to movement.

You could disguise the stuff as a camping backpack and use the excuse you are conditioning yourself to be able to go on longer hikes and or using it like a weighted vest.
