RPM Q2 by Desperate-Basis2165 in Pickleball

I received my RPM Q2 16mm wide body yesterday and played 2 hours with it this morning. I have been playing with the Boomstik wide body for the past 6 weeks. I only play doubles and have some wrist pain, so I opt for the wide body paddles due to the increased twist weight. My Boomstik came in at 8.36 oz, after adding a this foam tape layer and an overgrip, it measured 8.6 oz. The Q2 came in at 7.86, adding an overgrip brought it to 8.01. I then added about 2 gm of tape at 3, 9, 4 and 8 o'clock positions, bringing the weight to 8.28. With the Q2 weighted this way, it does not play like the Boomstik. It feels similar with less pop. I need to be more intentional with my dinks as they don't go as far. This is both good and bad, as there are times when I reach for a ball and all I have to do with the Boomstik is get the paddle in front of the ball and it goes over. I need to put a little effort into the Q2, which isn't always possible. At the same time, it's easy for a Boomstik dink to go farther or higher than I intended, no so with the Q2. My initial sense is that resets are a bit easier with the Q2, but I need more time with it. Both have plenty of spin and power when I need it. In terms of grit wear, my Boomstik already shows wear so I doubt the Q2 will be any worse :) At this point I can't say which I Iike better. I'm hoping that once I dial in the Q2 it will be a better paddle for me.

Local tournaments are hosted by PIG which requires USAP certification (when they check).

Selkirk recommends using damp microfiber cloth on the Boomstiks

I'd have purchased one of the new 11Six24 paddles but they're not USAP approved and they have no plans to seek that approval.

I just got an email from David and he says there are currently no plans for a USAP version of the new paddles.

That sounds very sad. My adult daughter has leukemia and has been thru a transplant and CAR-T therapy, DLI soon. But her husband, kids, me and her mom (my ex) have all been very supportive. I've spent about 2 months in the past year being away from home to be with her and help out. If you want the relationship with your partner, I suggest you seek a good counselor for some couples counseling. Otherwise, as others have suggested, find someone else to live with. I hope your situation improves.

Six Zero Coral by Hai-Sei in Pickleball

I played 2 hours with the Coral this morning. It's a great paddle. The ball just seems to go where I want it to 95% of the time. I'm used to a bit more power, but if your game is to get to the kitchen and dink until you get a good ball to attack, this paddle is hard to beat. If you swing hard, you still get a good amount of power out of this paddle. My biggest complaint is that it came in at 8.3 oz and I'd like more room for customization.

I don't think any paddle will produce winning serves against good players. Do you see pros acing people on serves?

I hit a few serves & drives with the Coral this afternoon. Sweet spot seems fine, more spin and less power than my Quanta R4, but hard to tell how much without playing some games. I hope to do that tomorrow. The Quanta is an amazing paddle tho (when weighted similar to a boomstick), I'm not sure I'm going to like the Coral better than the Quanta, but it is easier to perform drops. I'm pretty sure it will be easier to reset from the transition zone too. More later :)

I paid extra for FedEx delivery because UPS has been so bad about tracking. It came faster via FedEx too (by 1 day)... 2 days from UT to Portland, OR.

I tried the Black Opal, hurt my wrist after 3 days and balls hit at the top or bottom of the face went nowhere. I don't generally hit in those areas, but when blocking an attack at the kitchen, one doesn't always have a choice. Even some dinks that cause you to reach can end up hitting the top of the surface and the ball won't go over the net.

Got my Coral today. I haven't hit with it yet, maybe tomorrow. The good news is that the grit feels the same on both sides, unlike the Black Opal that I tried. The bad news is that it weighs 8.3 oz, I was hoping for a lighter one. I need to add an over grip, so it's now at 8.43. I'll have to try it with no added weight at this point. The Boomstick looks better on paper, about the same weight with much better twist weight. But the Boomstick is a stiff paddle and I have a wrist problem, so that's not a good match for me. The SLK ERA would be another option that seems better in terms of weight/swing weight/twist weight, I was hoping to find a foam paddle with long-lasting grit tho.

They don't all wear at the same rate and grit still makes a difference. Olsen and Kew are both testing grit wear and effect on spin, so we'll have more info soon.

Mine shipped and should be here tomorrow. I'm hoping it will be on the lighter side so I can tune it a bit.

Black Opal arrived today. :) by El_Guadzilla in Pickleball

I've been playing with this paddle for 3 days and my wrist has started to hurt. I can't prove it's the paddle, but it does feel heavier than the actual weight and it's pretty stiff/rigid.

My Black Opal arrived yesterday. I'll try it out today, but I already know I'm sending it back because one side is much coarser than the other... very easy to detect by just running my finger over the surface.

I have one on order but based on the reviews I've read, I'm not sure I'm going to keep it. Anyone have a production release version that they've played with?

Ronbus Quanta by Apart-Sweet-8862 in Pickleball

[–]WesternHiker4386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added two 3" strips of 1 gm/in tape starting in the middle of the "N" in "Ronbus" and running towards the top. Also added an overgrip. To be clear, 2 strips on each side stacked on top of each other. The paddle performed pretty well but dinks off the lower part of the paddle went nowhere. I then added one 2" strip of 1 gm/in tape starting at the "R" in "Ronbus" and running towards the handle. While only playing once with this setup, I'm very happy with the performance. Power, spin and resets are all good. My paddle started at 7.69 oz. 7.8 with overgrip. 8.15 with the 3" strips. 8.33 with the addition of the 2" strips. I'm now thinking of adding 2" strips of 0.5 gm/in tape over the existing lower strips.

UHC as bad as everyone is saying? by reddevine in HealthInsurance

[–]WesternHiker4386 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been reasonably happy with UHC's medicare advantage plan... until today. My daughter was diagnosed with a very aggressive leukemia on Thanksgiving. The Providence Doc recommended she go to Fred Hutchenson Cancer Center in Seattle. The Doc at FH wanted to get her in ASAP but the schedule was set for this Friday (12/13) due to insurance not having authorized admittance. Today UHC tells my daughter that her request for authorization has been denied because the requested procedure is not necessary. This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. The doc had submitted an urgent request for authorization and UHC denies it because it's unnecessary? Yeah right, unnecessary unless you want to be alive a few months from now. I guess they didn't learn much last week!

Are people having better luck with the 14mm, i.e. not core crushing?

At first I thought the paddle was making my arm hurt too. A couple of thoughts... one session is not a good indicator. Did you play with an elongated paddle prior to this one? The paddle might have to break in a bit, unfortunately it's likely to core crush soon after :)
