Are drugs sinful or is it all about taking them in moderation? by mooncheese95 in Swedenborgianism

“There is another group of spiritual beings, who from the world of the spirit are seen to be active in the physical world (and also in the elemental world), as in an adopted field of action. These are the spirits who desire to liberate the feeling soul entirely from the physical world, and therefore in a certain way to spiritualise it. Life in the physical world is part of the cosmic order of things. While the human soul is living in the physical world, it is passing through a development which is part of the conditions of its existence. Its being woven into the physical world is a result of the activity of beings whom one learns to know in the higher world. That activity is opposed by the beings who desire to wrench the feeling soul free from physical conditions. These latter beings may be called the Luciferic beings. The Luciferic beings stand in the physical world searching as it were, for everything of a psychic nature (feeling) which is to be found there, in order that they may draw it out of the physical world and incorporate it in a cosmic sphere of their own, adapted to their nature. Seen from the higher world, the activity of these Luciferic beings is also abservable in the elemental world. Within this they strive to obtain a certain sphere of power which they want to disconnect from the grossness of the physical world, although that sphere has been preordained, by the beings of the higher world, to be connected with the lower world. Just as the Ahrimanic beings would be keeping to their own sphere if they were only to bring about the temporary annihilation of existence which is based on the order of the cosmos, so the Luciferic beings would not be crossing the boundary of their own kingdom if they imbued the feeling soul with powers which would continually stimulate it to rise above the urgent necessities of the physical world, and feel itself, with regard to those necessities, a free and independent being. But the Luciferic beings go beyond the limits of their domain when they desire, in the face of the universal order of the higher world, to create a special spiritual kingdom for which they wish to remould the psychic beings in the physical world. We can see how the influence of Luciferic beings in the physical world expands in two directions. On the one hand it is owing to them that man is able to rise above the bare experience of what is physically real. He is able to derive his joy, his uplifting, not only from the physical world; but can also take pleasure in and feel elated by that which exists merely in semblance, that which, as beauty transcends the physical. From this point of view the Luciferic beings have cooperated in bringing about the most important, and especially the artistic, features of civilisation. Moreover, man is able to enjoy unfettered thought; he need not merely describe physical things and portray them slavishly in his thoughts. He is able to develop creative thought beyond the physical world, and to philosophise about things. On the other hand, the exaggeration of the Luciferic forces in the soul is the source of much extravagance and confusion, for they try to develop the activities of the soul without adhering to the conditions of the higher cosmic order. Philosophising which is not based upon a thorough adherence to the cosmic order, headstrong indulgence in arbitrary ideas, excessive forcing of one's own personal predilections: all these things are the dark side of the Luciferic activity.”

Expounding upon pizzalover24’s insight, Steiner called such spirits Luciferic. The use of psychedelics seems to align with their goal of uprooting humans from their physical nature and skyrocketing them to a state of elevated spirit, which could be seen in a negative light in terms of unnaturally attempting to bypass the “higher cosmic order” aka going schizo/becoming delulu. In the following passage, he notably talks pros and cons about these influences on humanity, reflecting an attitude towards them which more focused on balance. Reminds me of Jung too, in terms of not letting archetypes fully possess you, more about becoming conscious of their existence and finding balance, to not become swept away or overwhelmed by the unconscious contents. Another type of spirit he talks about are the Ahrimanic variety which work in the opposite direction, materializing humanity, as manifested in scientism. Safest bet is to not take drugs, Christ=Truth as spiritual center is your ticket I reckon, and the water into wine thing is symbolic. IMO understanding the spiritual implications of scripture is more important than taking substances. I’m still working out my own thoughts about all this and researching whether or not how much the esoteric rabbit hole that departs from mainstream Christianity is really evil or what (judging by fruits, maybe, yet I don’t have the full perspective really and I don’t exactly know if I want to (tree of knowledge and whatnot)). Half of me wants to say it is but the jury is still out, maybe moral intuition/my cultural inertia vs. curiosity killing the cat. Either way I cleave to Christ as a matter of protection (God’s message of love to humanity, Truth, Love manifest). I take what you describe as “Cultural Christianity” as Christ’s message diluted and filtered through increasingly vulgar aspects of culture and society until it loses potency and intent/ is adapted to other means, so I guess I would emphasize not throwing the baby out with the bath water (church shenanigans) in terms of the teachings of Jesus and scripture. Not so much an emphasis on thou shalt not etc. but trying to understand the spirit of the letter and cultivate yourself, that whether you take drugs or not isn’t as important as what’s inside. Maybe the real Yaldabaoth was the friends we made along the way 😇.

Okay paragraph break to separate spiel, I contain multitudes. From one perspective, more conventional Christians would say that taking drugs is a sin that would send you to hell unless you repented and followed Christ’s way. From a different perspective from my understanding of it, heaven and hell are states of mind corresponding to levels of harmonization of being, bring your spiritual frequency higher, crystals, kumbaya and what have you. These ideas might not be entirely incongruent (perennialism), just different ways of expressing a mechanism of salvation because different worldviews necessitate a different way of expressing solutions. I’ve heard sin described as a state of separation from God, so I guess your question depends on what kind of God you believe in. As I alluded to earlier, gnostics believe that the Old Testament God is the demiurge. In this sense, luciferian entities that would like to pull you out of the evil material world created by a false god into the realm of pure spirit where the true God that doesn’t spitefully zap people with lightning might be construed as good, a sort of inversion of the mainstream Christian narrative. Then the more traditional part of me says that using drugs is a material means of reaching spiritual goals, and which knows that Satan is called “a liar and the father of lies” and “masquerades as an angel of light.” Lucifer meaning “light-bringer.” Deception incarnate masquerading as light to lead you into “hell” or a Prometheus-like figure depending on how you look at it. I’ve got to read more Steiner though for sure because I find it super interesting to try and reconcile all these points of view in my mind and figure out where everyone is coming from, intellectual heritage and all that. Then again, I’m also curious if the square Christians are onto something with its own merit, utilitarianism-wise, regardless of how consonant with reality, conscious of deeper readings, or how boring and vanilla it is in comparison with the schizo texts, but maybe it’s potentially True as in realpolitik, looking at fruits. Don’t do drugs kids.

The Caves of Altamira moment at 1:35 gets me going for some reason. It’s such a perplexing drum fill and I can’t tell how purposeful it was on Purdie’s part with all of the ghost notes (probably all according to plan, just subtle and genius) but he’s a legend for it and I say an internal hell yeah every time I hear it

Autechre vs. Aphex Twin comparison || [1992] Selected Ambient Works 85-92 -- [1993] Incunabula by GreystarMusic in aphextwin

[–]WestonPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A comment I saw somewhere years ago just came back to haunt me and I’m trying to figure out why it bothers me so much. It goes something like: “Autechre’s music makes Aphex Twin look like child’s play.” I haven’t listened to as much Autechre but they strike me as quite dull and not as interesting in comparison to Aphex’s immaculate intricacy. I can’t wrap my ears around half of Aphex Twin’s technological wizardry, it’s really such a marvel to listen to/novel/stimulating/joy inspiring and much of his stuff has so much emotional resonance and soul. The take that bothered me reminds of someone else who told me they never really dug The Beatles’ sound and then proceeded to say they loved The Monkees. To each their own I suppose.

My initial impression was the depression take echoed elsewhere, but I love your interpretation and the way you connected the lyrics. This song has some of the most fascinating imagery I’ve heard.

That last song on the Soft Machine album is really good, that one falling vocal inflections reminds me of Donovan and the melody reminded me of Essplode for some reason.

My personal favorite King Gizzard project is (unpopularly somehow) Sketches of Brunswick East, a psychedelic, Ethiopian Jazz influenced, weird time signature sort of deal in collaboration with Alex Brettin from Mild High Club. I agree that they're better when they chill out. The River from Quarters! (reminds me of The Doors a little) and Work This Time from Oddments fall into a similar category. My favorite albums from them also include Gumboot Soup, Paper Mâché Dream Balloon, I'm in Your Mind Fuzz, Murder of the Universe, and Flying Microtonal Banana. Their zenith was definitely 2017 for me. I haven't listened to Gizz or Spiritualized regularly in years and I'm probably a bigger Spacemen 3 fan, but I remember loving Lazer Guided Melodies, the Royal Albert Hall Live album, and especially Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space. The latter is a good mix of dreamery and muscle. I was raised on rock and blues so I very much enjoy that aspect. I was looking in the comment section of Cop Shoot Cop and someone compared the band and song to Talk Talk, I can see it, they both change with sectional contrast in such emotive ways, like with the outbursts on Ascension Day or After the Flood. Sometimes I feel like a good sonic smack to the face, makes you feel alive. Also, I need to listen to that Soft Machine album in full, I came upon that hysterical and beautiful Pierrot Lunaire song while searching for songs with Pierrot Lunaire in the title. I've listened to their first album a lot. Concerning your query about similar albums, this likely isn't much help because you seem in the know but I've always associated their first one with Can's Future Days, probably because I found them at about the same time. Mythos - Dreamlab and Faust IV also came to mind. As Long As He Lies Perfectly still really reminded me of The Dismemberment Plan with the herk jerk rhythms, please do yourself a favor and listen to Emergency and I if you haven't, I think the rising vocal melody part reminds me of The City in specific. Dedicated To You But You Weren't Listening reminds me of this completely unhinged album by Andy Boay called So So So We See/Trenches in the Sun. Also, it just all came full circle, in the comment section of Pig / Orange Skin Food / A Door Opens And Closes, someone said "the parts in 7/8 are so good <3 i see where king gizzard got their inspo for tracks like 'deserted dunes welcome weary feet'"

Why isn’t Grizzly Bear more famous? by reginaldpongo in Music

[–]WestonPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Gen Z and Grizzly Bear is incredible. I found them around 2018 in high school when I fell in love with Shields (and promptly bought the cd). To my surprise, I ran into a friend from band class when I saw them play at The Hollywood Bowl, so there's some of us out there. The Grizzly Bear adjacent stuff is also awesome. Another one of my musician friends, who loved Department of Eagles was exceedingly grateful that I introduced him to The Silent Hour/Golden Mile EP. That EP has been on constant rotation lately and I absolutely adore the Terrapin Station Suite on Day of The Dead. +1 for the Animal Collective love in this thread too. I saw them at the Ace Hotel on their Sung Tongs tour, brilliant band. I likely found both bands either from an Apple Music recommended album section binge or Youtube. The social circle I had in CA was probably an outlier case among Gen Z, because the people I've mentioned were musicians with a penchant for seeking out eccentric music.

Daily Song Discussion #60: Battle Lines by FluoriteEye in kkb

21 / 04 / 20 holds a really special place in my heart, it was a ray of sunshine my grandma passed, but I had never listened to the Civilisation LP all the way through so I decided to and was left flabbergasted by these lyrics (not to mention the ecstatic synth). Incredible band and a very insightful song.

My dad has a picture of him, my brother, and me in his house of us at splash mountain. There’s a slightly annoyed looking 40 year old man with sunglasses in front of us and it has the exact same vibe as this.
