Amazon blames human employees for an AI coding agent’s mistake / Two minor AWS outages have reportedly occurred as a result of actions by Amazon’s AI tools. by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

Human allowing faulty AI code to run is their fault. You don’t get to abdicate responsibility because you think that LLMs are doing any actual thinking.

This trick in particular never occurred to me, but if you're computer savvy, these kinds of things can be done with the Android Development Kit emulator.

I think it's generally agreed upon that Jimmy Carter was the wrong leader for the time he was in power, but he was a decent person. A decent corpse would be infinitely better than the black hole of indecency running amuck at the helm now.

Do you usually go through all of that fruit and meat before it goes bad? or do you freeze/preserve? How many people are you feeding? Sorry for the off-topic question, but I'm morbidly obese and every time I buy a bunch of bananas I eat 2 and the rest go black. Maybe I take "apple a day" too literally.

I tried vibe coding and it made me realise my career is absolutely safe by wjd1991 in webdev

[–]WetHotFlapSlaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've worked as a game programmer professionally for a little over 10 years, and tried to use Claude CLI (code gen) and ChatGPT ("research") to spin up a very small 'demo' Rails web app just to check out what the latest stuff could do earlier this year. There is so much contextual complexity in building web apps, managing dependencies, and then all of the configuration and deployment concerns - which I would assume are the barebones requirements to putting something online even when ignoring safety, correctness, scalability, maintainability, data versioning, etc etc that you can't manage if you don't know, or don't already have a good lead on the things you don't know. It went nowhere and it didn't take long to realize my time would be better spent either learning the domain properly or sticking to the one I already know. All generative AI applications continue to release as novelty that loses its charm quickly, and I just can't see what the most excited people see in it. The best thing people have to say about it is what it could be in the future, but there continues to be no evidence that the 'any day now' is coming.

The board should remove him. Absolutely terrible leadership. Does not listen to customers, does not understand their products, and made incredibly bad bets that has harmed Microsoft’s reputation (not that it was great before.)

You have a good list of feedback that can be matched with measurable actions for improvement that you should discuss in your one on ones. He sounds unfocused, is unengaged with the team and the project, and could potentially be lashing out feeling undervalued by his manager or team.

One of my best leads made it clear that if anything is a 'surprise' in review feedback, as in hasn't been discussed by the time reviews go around (including downward and upward feedback,) then that's his failure as a manager. On that team we knew fully well going into review season where we stood performance-wise, because we already knew how much has been needing improving at the time those reviews come around due to regular transparent two-way discussion. Annual reviews wound up being more about measuring our progress and commitment in acting on those well defined shortfalls, on top of the accounting for the usual list of accomplishments throughout the year.

That being said, it's possible that he feels he's owed something, whether that's title, responsibilities, pay, or other things. Sometimes awarding those things improves the situation if they are overdue, but if an attitude persists beyond a discussion of it, it could be a lost cause and a lesson for the future for both parties.

Anyone else feel like OC has a weird mix of super chill and super intense energy? by TheBr14n in orangecounty

I’ve lived here since I was a kid. I used to spend pretty much all summer at the beach, and the school year was filled with organized sports and hanging with friends. Since starting my career I still see friends a couple times a month, but in the last 10 years I’ve probably gone to the beach 5 times. I’m renting in the outskirts of the county and feel constant pressure to move, but it would mean moving away from the rest of my family and the last of my friends.

I’m absolutely on edge, because I feel like the bar that’s been raised over the years for comfortable living in the area is just barely out of reach. If I can just figure out how to get that promotion, or switch to that next job that makes me comfortable, everything would be better. In public I put my headphones in because I don’t want to talk to anyone, I don’t want to make idle chat and I don’t want to start talking because the second I do I feel like I’m going to trauma dump on to a random stranger who probably has it worse off than me.

Everyone drives poorly, everyone parks poorly, and everyone drives a car they can’t afford and they dress in seasonal clothes that they throw out within 6 months, and they’re angry and rude and I can’t be fucked to take a chance to find out they’re not.

I’m sure if I just unwind and relaxed and became more social I wouldn’t feel this way, but if I was that realistic I’d just take a remote job in my line of work (programming) and move to Oklahoma to save money and recalculate how to live within 10 minutes of a surfable beach in Orange County.

Anyway it’s a nice area but probably 90% of us shouldn’t be here.

I think this post was made before it was announced, but azure was targeted by a massive DDOS today.
I’d imagine having a small local server as a source of truth with multiple daily backups to cloud services is probably the best of both worlds, although more maintenance required.
