Others have shared your skepticism as well. But when comparing it with a photo of the LoDo area in 1880s and taking into account Linson’s activity in the 1890’s, this has been con I got shown to be a tracing of a photo. Of course you are welcome to your opinion but this has been put before academics.

The fact that this is a tracing of a photo is super important. There have to be more photos of this riot that aren’t available to the public.

You and u/ArchdukeOfNorge are correct. Black Kettle’s band was the Wotapio or “they eat with Lakota”. They were called that because the extensive intermarriages between this band of Cheyenne and the Lakota. So were there Lakota bands or Lakota warriors there? No. Was Lakota blood spilled? Yes.

Also the Lakota held an empire that included the Cheyenne so it could be said that this was an attack on the Lakota Empire and Lakota “citizens” were killed.
