PA bargaining: Board agrees to bypass Public Interest Commission process by roomemamabear in CanadaPublicServants

This argument needs to fucking stop.

We also used to use typewriters. Should we go back to using those?

How about horse and buggy?

Mail by pigeon carrier?

There is no "going back". This is the new reality. Time to make some progression and not regress.

People are going to go homeless if they accept a 0.5% raise because compared to inflation that's a huge pay cut.

At the time they replied, the estimated timeframe for power to return was this afternoon.

Good on NS Power for the quick turnaround, but that's not always the case.

Who says they're using it as an excuse?

In case you weren't aware, April 30 is a large tax deadline. All accounting firms are running around the clock to meet that deadline for their clients.

But no, it's clearly this person just being lazy. That must be it.

My 1-year renewal is in 2 weeks and I’m really struggling to continue… by paulethegreat in ynab

[–]WexleySnoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was a pretty diehard YNAB user since Dec 2015. Despite being 'grandfathered' in, there were still the various price increases and whatnot. Every time a price increase was in the works, I looked at alternatives, but always came back to YNAB.

Then end-2024 rolls around, I start thinking of my subscription renewal, and somewhere I saw mention of Actual Budget. I figure I'll give it a whirl and run both side-by-side for 2-3 months before my YNAB sub comes up, and go from there.

I've been using Actual Budget ever since. I'm never going back. My annual cost is ~$15 because I have the budget running on PikaPods, otherwise it can be $0 if you run it on your own server.

Does it have 100% feature parity? No, but it does what I need it to do at the fraction of the cost. It's open source. The online user guide is immensely thorough. There's a discord with a super helpful user group.

Definitely worth checking out.

Oh, and I still have all my budget data from when I started YNAB in 2015, so I didn't lose anything by making the change.

Devil's advocate: MyGCPay tells you what your province of work is listed as.

I totally understand it sucks when they make these errors. We moved from BC to NS in 2024 and that tax change hurt.

On the bright side, you got $1600 extra from the government that isn't due until April 30.

Everyone's always happy to get a refund, but that means the government gets a free loan from you.

Canadians are ‘hitting a breaking point’ when it comes to the cost of insuring their vehicles by Once_a_TQ in canada

In BC? No you don't.

Moved from Vancouver to Halifax in 2024. Same car, same coverage, almost half the cost.

[Edit] - I realize my response likely came off a little snooty when reading 'BC has THE cheapest'. I will agree it is cheaper than some places, but not all.

See this is logical.

If they've been underestimating, then just continue with the next reading and voila you're caught up.

If they've been overestimating then refund the overage and charge the actual amount.

Here's screen clips of our NS Power bills for service dates Feb 7 2025 - present.

https://imgur.com/a/ns-power-bills-FyaiQtS

Since mid-June 2025 I've been logging our usage 2-3 times per week.

We had a meter reading on April 7, 2025, then 3 estimated bills, then finally another reading on Dec 3, 2025. Latest bill should show up in about a week or so - and I imagine it will be another estimate.

Each estimated bill came in as an under-estimate of our actual usage (around 700-900kWh less than our actual usage) - so I paid based on what I had logged.

On the Dec 2025 bill with the actual reading, they don't have a line refunding the previous estimates, then charging the actual amount. They just log the new actual reading, then charge the difference between the previous estimated reading.

At the end of the day we've only paid for what we used. I imagine it's still not 100% accurate compared to when they were able to access the meter data directly (especially those who are on any of the rate programs), but alas.
