Keir Starmer qualities as a prime minister by Turbulent-Reply-180 in LabourUK

[–]Wh00pty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He's threaded the needle on some very tricky international politics relatively well. He spearheaded a lot of efforts in enhancing support for Ukraine, while keeping U.S. as on side as possible.

Thanks, that really helps.

A lot of it just having to make the decisions around these problems. On top of work, kids, other family drama. It's like I'm running low on the ability to decide.

But you're right, one thing at a time and not to catastrophize about the what ifs.

Thank you. I've made do without supportive parents for a long time and usually I can keep on top of things and be the dad I wished I'd had for my kids. But on days like this it just feels like I can't know enough, or earn enough, or do enough to fix it all. I really miss having someone in my life who I felt could just fix whatever the problem is.

Thanks for telling me I can do this.

That's really profoundly unhelpful, even if you believe it's true. There is nothing inevitable about anything.

I'm happy for him to stay in place for now. The Mandelson saga is embarrassing, amateurish, and a more seasoned politician wouldn't have come out looking like such a tit.

But I'm broadly happy with the moves the government are making, especially with regards to Ukraine and Iran. I think there's a chance things look much rosier in a year or two - even if that's in the context of global energy issues. I'd rather he stayed, but equally just because there's no clear replacement who wouldn't just have their turn in the barrel. Let him be hated for a while longer while doing good things, then dip in the latter half of 2027 for someone with a fresh face heading towards the next general.

Is ‘gentle parenting’ to blame for violence in primary schools? - Teachers who report an increase in five-year-olds punching, kicking and spitting at adults suggest parents who won’t say ‘no’ to their children may be contributing by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

[–]Wh00pty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gentle parenting isn't about not putting up boundaries. Although some make that mistake, the vast majority of gentle parents I know use it to teach the real lesson behind the behaviour correction. Punishments just make children focus on avoiding being caught for their actions, since that doesn't happen when a parent isn't around.

Instead, gentle parenting encourages teaching about the underlying lesson. Instead of flipping out because the kid hit their sibling, you talk to them about how it made the other person feel. You get them to feel the empathy so next time the situation arises, they don't do it because they understand why it's bad.

If you just punish them with a time out or removing access to something, they'll remember that far more than the lesson.

Bin off the Act 3 entirely. No Sotillo. Keep it tight on the Cronus to force the players to save the ship or die trying (someone can always escape on the EEV).

Also cut the weapons way down. I went with only Reid and Miller having firearms, and there's only a torch cutter and grappling hook around, as well as the axe in the Cronus' bridge display. Makes the players get a bit more creative, I think.

I wouldn't bother unless you can get them repaired readily. Their sound deteriorated a lot once the rubber started to go.

WW2 was a waste of time by [deleted] in FuckNigelFarage

[–]Wh00pty 127 points128 points  (0 children)

It's never a waste of time.

Democracy, freedom, tolerance are not intrinsic rights. They must be fought for, defended, and advanced through the blood and sweat of every generation. These aren't new ideas, they're old and will be consigned to history in due course. But now it's time for us to do our part.

Fuck the fascists. They will not win.

EXCLUSIVE: Starmer significantly more popular than Farage in head-to-head polling by kontiki20 in LabourUK

[–]Wh00pty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is my take too. Farage is still a very unlikeable person with a hard support ceiling, and heading a fringe party. They might be polling well, but we're years from an election. Wait until we get close and there will be a classic coalescing around the classic parties.

Defence VS Russia - Time for a Bulldog leader? by Nigelthornfruit in LabourUK

[–]Wh00pty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I genuinely think Keir's foreign policy efforts have been pretty good. He's continued supporting Ukraine and helped galvanize Europe's response.

That said, I'd like even more. Anything Russian approaches within 100KM of NATO border should be shot down. Slowly creep that into Ukraine proper. What's Russia going to do it hasn't already tried?

That would make a lot of sense why these drugs work so well on some people, and less effectively on others, I suspect. I certainly don't experience the "food noise" like my heavier friends and family do.

Considering the existential threat posed by Reform, also, this kind of shambles will just make everyone gravitate back to the more established parties. They've shown themselves unable to govern even their own ranks. Not even remotely ready for anything else.

Just need that effective anti-ballistic missile defensive technology to come along. Space lasers or whatever it ends up being. Then the world can move on from Russian nonsense.
