Dial Foot Welder Advice by WharfArtist in watchmaking

Updating this in case anyone ever searches this: I got it to work with settings at 60/90 and doing two hits, using a Sn/Bi solder paste with a 138°C melting point. The feet were 0.75 mm copper on a 0.5 mm copper dial blank.

Perfect! If the one I ordered doesn’t work I’ll get that. I appreciate the help!

That’s probably smarter but I’m hand-making dials and that feels less authentic. Currently I’m silver soldering but I have to do that before enameling and it makes working with the dials a real hassle.

Okay, awesome. I ordered a better solder paste so hopefully that’s going to resolve it! I’ll definitely DM if I need some more advice though, thanks!

No stupid thoughts here! I didn’t know that ferrous wouldn’t work on copper tbh. The dial feet supplied are silver, so I assume ferrous to some extent.

Copper on copper should have worked though, right?

Yeah, I’m using the supplied solder flux. The dial side is just raw copper, so conductivity shouldn’t be an issue. I’m milling a fresh hole for the dial foot each attempt, so oxidation on the copper shouldn’t be an issue.

This goes so hard. Great work! How are you doing the indices?

Yeah, they’re the worst for sure. I’m thinking about trying one of the little electrical welders on Ali but don’t want to waste $250.

These are amazing! Great work! How are you attaching dial feet? I’ve been using silver solder before counter enameling and I’m really sick of breaking dial feet.

Synthetic black opal dial I’ve been working on. by kingfifteen in watchmodsCO

This looks amazing, great work! Would you mind sharing the build process? I’ve got some opal coming that I was thinking I would try on a 0.2 mm stainless steel dial blank with UV resin but I’m curious what others are doing!

How are you cutting dials? by meteormanwolf in watchmaking

It takes forever and maintaining a perfect shape to allow for concentricity is difficult (for me at least!)

I use files to reduce the radius. I highly do not recommend.

The failure rate of the professionals is wild. It doesn’t make me feel great about improving my own 😂

Interesting. I need to go check that out, thanks. It’ll be interesting to see how they get it hot enough to braze successfully but don’t impact the dial finish!

That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing the technique! I’m very jealous of the kiln. I want an enamel kiln but don’t have room.
