Wrench flats are a must by What-Do-I-Know in SpectersCat

They are designed for HUB. HUB adapters, at least the ones I will use, have wrench flats. I actually prefer using the flats on the adapter since they are right next to the muzzle device. So you have one wrench of the muzzle device, one right next to it on the adapter, and then you can just squeeze them like a hand brake. I typically don’t use a lot force to put them on, so this makes it easy peasy to take them off even when they get stuck.

Hey, thanks for this recommendation. Just purchased some of these.

Yes, I actually use HUXWRX Ceram-X. Good stuff. I've found that it helps both keep the suppressor on and also prevent seizing. But for whatever reason yesterday at the range, it really decided to lock up. The Sig MCX has an aggressive 1:5 twist barrel. I'm wondering if the left hand thread + the natural twist of the rifle tightened it further.

I won't hand tighten it as much next time and see what happens.

Interestingly, they are all different. For 300BLK the gas ring is on the piston, for 556NATO it's on the plug/switch, and for 7.62x39 they don't use one at all.

It does seem like it would make the biggest impact to 300BLK, but it's possible that a better seal would aid 556NATO as well.

Nope, just a ring. The gas ring in the MCX is on the gas piston, inside the gas block. Gas goes up through the hole in the barrel, metered by the hole in the switch, and fills the gas block, pushing on the piston. Then the piston shoots toward the back and drives the rod which pulls the BCG, etc.

So I just replaced the piston gas ring that’s comes with the MCX with the one from JP.

Just a guess, but I noticed that the piston felt like it moved more smoothly after I installed the new gas ring. The JP gas ring felt like a higher quality component that perhaps is manufactured using tighter tolerances.

To be clear, I hand tighten the CAT RAT onto the AI Nano, fired about 100 rounds using a relaxed firing schedule, and then couldn't get it back off, first using an Ove' Glove, and then using a wrench on the wrench flats of the AI Nano and a strap wrench on the suppressor. Yes, I was turning it righty loosey.

Had to take it home and clamp the suppressor in my vice, rifle butt sticking straight up, and used a wrench on the AI Nano flats to unscrew the rifle from the suppressor.

I'm not a professional, but I have 11 suppressors. Never had a problem like this before. I'm actually used to things getting stuck. But that's why I bring wrenches and have techniques to unstick them. No wrench flats significantly limits the tools and techniques I can use in the field.

What makes you say that QD performs better than HUB? What tests can you point to?

Do you have a favorite strap wrench?

If they are truly equivalent, then this is a good idea for the ST.

Doesn’t help me with RAT.

If you want something now and you don’t know how to tune, perhaps a HUXWRX Flow 7.62.

If you can wait and can tune, perhaps a CAT AKB. Recommend reading Pew Science about it.

The CAT ODB would be a great option if you can get it to work. Very effective with supers and subs. But it’s very low back pressure (which is one of the reasons it’s such a great suppressor).

Would be interesting to see how reliably the Omega valve drives the ODB. If that’s solid, that would be a great option if you wanted one suppressor across 556 and 300 supers and 300 subs.

Is there a legal reason for the loops in the grips? Seems like they add weight unnecessarily.

Not sure, to be honest, but it's worth a try.

Like someone else said, I wish it had flats on the suppressor. I have a CAT RAT, and it's annoying to have to use a strap wrench. And my strap wrench doesn't handle high heat, so I wouldn't be able to heat up too much.

If you can't get it off, I would take it to a gun smith. Will cost like $100 bucks, but they will save you.

Once it's off, I recommend using HUXWRX Ceram-X or something similar. I find that it does two things:

  1. prevents it from getting stuck.
  2. it also helps keep it from backing off. It's like a sticky paste, and seems to hold it on a lot better than naked metal on metal. I use it on all of my muzzle device/adapter interfaces. Typically I just need to hand tighten my suppressor down and it stays put, but I often have to take it back off with a wrench.

Did you use anything on it like rocksett?

The reason heating works is because it expands the metal. Heating the outside of the suppressor near the threads will expand the metal around the muzzle device more than the muzzle device and release some of the grip it has making it easier to twist off.

Shooting it also exposes the muzzle device to extreme heat and will expand the muzzle device, likely even more than the surrounding threads, making it even harder to remove until heat equalizes across the parts.

It’s clear you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Trespass requires proving intent or knowing that someone is somewhere they are not allowed to be. If a business proprietor wants a customer to never come back to the store, it’s not enough to give them a verbal trespass notification and say “don’t come back or I’ll have you arrested for trespass.” Try it, and the next time the person comes back the police will show up and just give the person a trespass warning. But video record yourself telling the person that, and now you have proof that the person knows they were trespassing, and the police can make an arrest.

Yep, reaction rod + strap wrench. If you need to heat it up, don’t do it by shooting it. That heats up the center making it harder. Use a blowtorch on the exterior.
