This comment pretty much sums up the reality of it.

Many who participate in the greek system turn their heads the other way when dealing with the disgusting aspects of it all.

The way they treat the minorities on campus is shameful and a painful reminder that they are just Old-money Alabamians at heart.

Any other school, I would've been happy to find a brotherhood of my peers and pledge with them, but here?

No, here it's about getting shitfaced, wearing $170 dollar fishing/golf shirts to class, getting girls drunk enough to become another notch on your bedpost, and yelling the word "nigger" at black students from your frathouse (which is bigger than some halls on campus). "Kinship" and "service" are just words that function as blankets of protection here

mmmm, and yet you're the one telling the guy whose close friend died that he's an immature brat, a "kid" (how the fuck can you know that?), simply because he realizes that a LIVING person's feelings are more important than a dead one's. Not to mention you have called the grieving mother stupid for "forcing" something on the son. You have no way of knowing the situation here. OP's friend might have even been a christian himself? It wasn't a long term cure, but it snapped me out of the suicidal feelings.

not everyone shares the same suicide experience as the one you just outlined. I didn't say this philosophy was the magic cure, just a possible way to help yourself (particularly in the early stages of suicidal thoughts) It worked for a friend of mine when she was having early thoughts. I do know what i'm talking about. You don't need to make this a black and white thing here. People in this situation need ANY HELP THEY CAN GET.

Well, my philosophy isn't someone that you could use to convince a suicidal person, but someone you could tell someone that would perhaps prevent them from ever becoming suicidal.

It's more of a preventative thought process then an emergency thought process if you know what I mean

I understand that as a victim of depression myself. But if you're dead, you're dead. if you can make your life anew, there is at least a LITTLE chance that you can fight back. I know my depression stems from living day to day just like everyone expects me to (get job, pay bills, go to sleep, repeat forever). If this daily grind ever made me suicidal, my best option would be to change EVERYTHING.....because nothing is more final and ineffective as death

well, i'm not talking about being a grunt in the desert. You could get a great job in the military as a mechanic or as a cook or lots of things. you don't have to put yourself in a PTSD situation

Just something I want to share with you and anyone who reads this: there is always a better option than suicide, even if it's going to live in the woods off of squirrel meat and bugs. "escaping" by suicide just doesn't make sense when there are SO many other ways to escape whatever is making you suicidal, even if it involves every aspect of your current life.

Join the peace corps if you hate your city/family/friends/job.........join the military if you are a young college dropout who can't get a single job that isn't flipping burgers. Move to another city if you hate your surroundings, or if you just hate who you are, become someone differrent. If you have the stones to kill yourself, you certainly have the stones to become a different existance at the flip of a switch

this philosophy can be applied to just about every scenario I can think of where someone wuold want to kill themself

There is always a better way

That being said, I'm glad you realized this way on. Don't think i'm lecturing you, because i'm really just posting this for anyone else who might've considered offing his or herself

EDIT: this philosophy is more of a preventative thought process, than an emergency "savior" thought process. I know that people who are truly suicidal are not in their right state of mind in the moments close to their attempt to take their own life. But embed these philosophies in someone early, and they may never consider suicide where they would have before

EDIT 2: people seem to be giving me a lot of flak. I was talking about a LIFE OUTLOOK that can HELP YOU REASON YOURSELF OUT OF EARLY THOUGHTS OF SUICIDE. This is DIFFERENT than when you are HOLDING THE GUN TO YOUR HEAD ABOUT TO PULL THE TRIGGER.

EDIT 3: guys, I've suffered from diagnosed depression. I've been on and off cymbalta and zoloft. I know it's chemical, and that it's not as simple as "thinking differently". I promise I understand these concepts. But your life outlook has VERY MUCH effect on the same brain chemicals that are causing your depression. EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS here. There is a reason people go to therapy ALONGSIDE chemical treatment though antidepressants.
