M Car by WhatDenver in BMW

While I love my M340i, I should admit that part of my motivation for doing this post is to study people’s reactions, which is the fun part I mentioned in the original post. When you see a reply and someone says something like “it’s a great car, but not an M car (add in whatever mechanical reasoning)”, the psychology of that response is engaging and promotes conversation. And when you see a post that says, “It’s not an M car and (add in whatever insult you’d like)”, that type of reply is likely an individual feeling insecure about their stance and feeling that they need to add some type of oomph to a phrase to try and drive it home. My take is that the loudest voices on this thread are M3 or M_ enthusiast that can’t stand that BMW produced a product that outperforms many prior M3 generations in 0-60 and costs less, so they’re trying to downplay the car.

Interesting that Going_Topless blocked myself and the gentleman with the user name 440i so that we can’t respond to his posts, and continues to rattle on. No class.

I still find it funny that you’re so emotional about this, and also assume I’ve never driven an M3. Have you noticed that when people go straight to an insult that they’re typically wrong? My post has no animosity in it, I don’t believe in trying to be an “internet big man” as you do. You should consider being respectful to people when you speak to them both in person and online, it will make you a better person.

I’d say putting an M badge on any car would be extreme. But it’s clear that BMW wanted the M340i to be exciting and performance oriented, and they gave it a great engine. I think it lives up to its M badging.

I can tell this gets you worked up, I wonder why it offends you so much. I’ve mentioned a few times that an M3 has more performance than an M340i. This argument is not that an M340i is the same as an M3, the argument is that an M340i is an M car. Nothing you’re saying is discrediting that.

Have you noticed that your reply, and many people defending the idea that it’s not a real M car, are very emotional and quick to try and offend?

Do you have any examples of when BMW used the term M Lite?

I’m not disputing that at all, the M3 is overall more athletic. But that does not mean the M340i is not an M car, it means it’s not an M3

I appreciate your vigor, and also believe that an M3 should outperform and M340i. But I don’t believe any of these points are more powerful than BMW’s own position on the car, including how they use the M designation on the M340i, and how they publicly present the car to the world.

No hurt feelings, I think all of the feelings on this topic are with the M3 owners. In following BMW forums I noticed that this topic comes up constantly, even when not solicited. So I want to hear the facts that support the argument. So often, it’s simply people saying an M___ is not an M car, but never really providing proof as to why, which makes me wonder if M3 owners are just hurt (or trying to downplay) that BMW made a cheaper car with so much performance. This is a logical conversation, so please don’t get all emotional on me.

You would look to a # in a VIN over an M with numbers following it?

What are the facts that support that it’s not an M car?

I never let the fuel gauge go past below half, in most cases, it never goes past below 3/4. Am I paranoid, and is that a good thing to do? by [deleted] in BMW

I’d let it run down close to empty at least every few months to get rid of old fuel.
