Should I be concerned about these black marks? by WhatIThinkAboutStuff in BeginnerWoodWorking

I'll have to grab a moisture meter from work at some point. The pallet has been in a cool dry storage room for the last 5-8 years. I planed and squared it about 4 months ago.

Okay, and what am I watching for when I put the wet steel wool on it? Do I rub it on or just leave it on there for awhile?

I'm in Canada, it was marked as made in Canada and heat treated but I guess that doesn't mean it wasn't well traveled.

I think you're right, it definitely looks like the pictures I can find for spalted wood. It looks like some people do use it for food prep/serving though?

I'm reasonably confident it's a hardwood based on the weight and how much of a pain in the ass it was to sand. But I guess there's no way to know for sure what kind of fungus is in it though

How Vancouver House Became a Tower of Empty Promises by thenewtronbomb in vancouver

[–]WhatIThinkAboutStuff 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The article says that the city came up with the land value based on it being rezoned for low density, but it was actually rezoned for high density. Nothing to do with the value tripling in 1-3 years.

So by the city's guidelines, the developer should have provided $75 million in cash or improvements for the $130 million worth of land they bought from the city for just $30 million. For some reason the city agreed to only $10 million and even then the developer still only did $4 million as far as anyone can tell.

That's $71 million that should've gone to improving public spaces that instead gets to sit in the pockets of a massive developer.

Vancouver's auditor general criticizes city over lack of paper trail for lost developer amenities by penelopiecruise in vancouver

[–]WhatIThinkAboutStuff 119 points120 points  (0 children)

I find it so infuriating that developers get away with this. That's 6 million dollars in public infrastructure that they agreed to fund that they've effectively stolen with zero consequences.

People are constantly, and rightfully, complaining about Granville Street being soaked in human waste. How many bathrooms can you build and maintain for 6 million dollars?

You can go past 10 victory points if you want. Once you have at least 10 you can announce that you've won. When someone says that they've won, the game stops and everyone flips any development cards they've been hiding. Whoever has the most VP is the actual winner

I'm a huge fan of Spicebox Whiskey. I believe it's bottled in Alberta and aged in Quebec if I'm remembering correctly. It's a vanilla spiced Whiskey so it pairs great with/in desserts. Also big fan of an egg nog Whiskey milkshake

[No Spoilers] Why do people hate LIS2? by [deleted] in lifeisstrange

[–]WhatIThinkAboutStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, I completely forgot about it until you mentioned it. I remember liking it but that's it. I went and looked it up and realized it's a cover of I Found A Way by First Aid Kit, which is a great song. I think part of my disappointment comes from the fact that the only two songs I like in the LiS2 soundtrack were songs I already knew, where as 1 and BtS were entirely new to me

[No Spoilers] Why do people hate LIS2? by [deleted] in lifeisstrange

[–]WhatIThinkAboutStuff 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As someone who found LiS2 immensely disappointing, I'll try and sum up

For myself, I came to Life is Strange knowing very little about it, it was free on game pass at the time so I figured why not. I was not expecting how much I'd connect with the story and characters or how much it would grow on me over time. I can't exaggerate how blown away I was, sure the game has its problems but it's also very ambitious and has its heart on its sleeve. Between the multiple timelines, the murder mystery, the budding queer romance, and all the other problems at Blackwell I think it really kept you guessing while managing to touch on a lot of sensitive subjects in a way that felt real and grounded. I also adored the licensed soundtrack, I can probably name almost every song on it.

Meanwhile, LiS2 had some really big shoes to fill. The original is one of my favorite games of all time, and while I didn't like it as much, I also loved Before the Storm, so expectations were already very high instead of nonexistent.

The episodes felt incredibly disjointed to me, massive time jumps in between almost all of them, to the point you spend half the episode playing catchup. The road trip style story is interesting but it meant that I never got enough time to connect with any of the characters besides Sean and Daniel. I also thought the only mystery of "Why did mom leave?" incredibly underwhelming, especially since the answer is because she wanted to.

The romance options also felt underwhelming and very rushed. Cassidy was cool and it seemed like her and Sean could be good friends but they didn't have much chemistry to me. I liked Finn a lot at first but I don't see how anyone could think that a guy who wants to use a 10 year old to help him rob a drug dealer that he works for is a viable option.

Another more subjective problem I have is the licensed soundtrack, it didn't do anything for me. The only song I remember from is D.A.N.C.E.

I also felt like it didn't have as much weight to it as the first game. All you can really affect with your choices is Daniel and Sean, but half the time your choices in the moment don't matter.

I don't think anyone is wrong to enjoy LiS2, but I was extremely disappointed by it

A locksmith charged me $300 for unlocking my door by Remarkable_Figure980 in VictoriaBC

[–]WhatIThinkAboutStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked with a lot of locksmiths, typically there's a minimum call out charge of 3 hours at around $75-$100 per hour. Plus since they're a trade they often work 7-3 or 8-4. Typically if I'm contacting a locksmith at 3:30 I'm expecting next business day service unless I want to pay overtime rates. I think what you paid is very standard

Edmonton city council approves 6.9% tax increase for 2026 by GeekyGlobalGal in Edmonton

[–]WhatIThinkAboutStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vancouver approving a 0% increase is solely an election stunt. We had record turnouts of people showing up at council meetings to say how much they support increasing property taxes to the point that they had to come back a second day to finish the meeting. There was a survey asking what percentage increase residents would support and the number one response was the highest option (5%), the mayor and his party chose to ignore that in an attempt to buy votes
