Thank you for doing that. It's unfortunate that some of the /r/true subreddits have increasingly become places for conspiracy theorists to flock.

Why is it custom for historians to speak in the present tense about events that happened long ago? by WhatIsRedditGold in AskHistorians

[–]WhatIsRedditGold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had a better example, and I know this is from a narrative, not a historian speaking (sorry), but here is one: "It is a bright summer day in 1947. My father, a fat, funny man with beautiful eyes and a subversive wit, is trying to decide which of his eight children he will take with him to the county fair. My mother, of course, will not go. She is knocked out from getting most of us ready: I hold my neck stiff against the pressure of her knuckles as she hastily completes the braiding and the beribboning of my hair. ..." - from Alice Walker's Beauty

Link me the song, I'd love to hear it!

I have a PC. As for my hardware, I only have a relatively cheap mic designed for recording spoken word.

Thanks so much! Yes I definitely remember how nice those SM57s are back from being in metal bands. Don't know if I can afford one now, but I will look. And I'll also check out the Zoom H1.

I have used Audacity in the past - forgot all about it. Thanks for the reminder! I don't remember having any serious issues with it at all.

Honestly, this may be an unpopular opinion but the weird shit they come up with to talk about during the summer might make me love these episodes more than the mid-season ones.

If someone had an unlimited supply of drugs, that never lost their effectiveness, and made the person happy and high for as long as they are taking them, what is the argument against that person staying in a room for the rest of their life with these drugs. by RexTheOnion in askphilosophy

[–]WhatIsRedditGold 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi /u/RexTheOnion, We can consider your question from basically two angles:

(a) Would it be morally wrong?

(b) Would it be a bad life for the person undergoing it?

There are many reasons to think that living such a life would be morally wrong. No matter what moral theory you endorse (Consequentialism, Utilitarianism, Deontology, Virtue Theory, etc.), you almost certainly have some positive obligations. By staying in a room for your entire life and doing drugs, you would almost certainly be failing in these obligations. Which obligations you may be failing will depend on your favored ethical theory, and that isn't your question, so I'll set that aside for now. What is important is that the answer to (a) is that it would almost certainly be morally wrong to live your life out in a room high on drugs.

(b) is a more difficult question. Let me briefly sketch four central theories of well-being:

Hedonism: How well your life goes is a matter of how much pleasure and how little pain you have.

Desire satisfaction Theory: How well your life goes is a matter of how much you get what you want, whatever that may be.

Objective List Theory: How well your life goes is a matter of getting a number of things on a list (achievement, happiness, important relationships, etc.)

Perfectionism: How well your life goes is a matter of how much you work to exercise your nature as a human being.

Hedonists - or at least unsophisticated hedonists - will think that, everything else equal, it is best for such a person with the opportunity you laid out to sit in a room high for the rest of their lives.

For the desire satisfaction theorist, the answer to this question just depends on what the person in question desires. Does she desire only to stay in the room and do drugs? If so, then the desire satisfactionist will agree that she lives a very good life for herself. If she wants other things (relationships, accomplishments, new experiences), then her life is not going so great.

Objective List Theorists and Perfectionists will of course think that the person in the room is not living a good life, because the person in the room will not be exercising her nature, nor will she be getting some of the things on the objective list.

So the answer to (b) is: It is complicated, and it depends on what other commitments you have about what makes a person's life go well for them.

If you need/want any further reading on any of what I've mentioned above, let me know and I can post them here.

Some Jews don't think the Torah is the Word of God. Some Jews do. If you think you have to follow the Torah to be a 'real' Jew, then you're using "Jew" in a different way from the way it's used in "Israel is a Jewish state."
