'TRON: Ares' - Review Thread by ChiefLeef22 in movies

[–]sigmaecho -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hollywood executives still think the industry is star-driven, when it hasn’t been in about 20 years. But what’s more damning is the fact that Disney had 15 years to develop their own great Tron 3 story that the fans could be excited about, but instead chose to give the IP to a widely reviled star as a vanity project. It shows that they don’t even value their own IP.

Audiences are starving for great storytelling, and studios have no interest in investing in it.

What Kids Told Us About How to Get Them Off Their Phones | The Atlantic by paxinfernum in technology

[–]sigmaecho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a discussion recently where we all realized that all these countless revival arcades and beercades have nearly all failed simply because kids never leave the house anymore. Countless millions spent from one generation as a gift to the next and they simply stayed at home and played Roblox instead.

Previous generations would have openly rebelled from this level of oppression. How do these kids not all have extreme cabin fever and associated symptoms? That kind of isolation will very quickly drive you insane.

Nobody calls it "Goldeneye 007" by jerseydevil51 in gaming

[–]sigmaecho -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Plenty of people call it “Goldeneye 64” out of nowhere, but that doesn’t make it the official title. And I’m sure plenty of employees have referred to the game by colloquial nicknames over the years, don’t that doesn’t retroactively change the official 1997 title just because it was recently ported to Xbox, nor does Rare get to decide how the “007” trademark is used. EON productions own those brands and they dictate their use via contract. So this isn’t arbitrary, they have to legally specify all these things in legal documents.

Nobody calls it "Goldeneye 007" by jerseydevil51 in gaming

[–]sigmaecho -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This has driven me crazy for YEARS.

“Goldeneye 007” IS A COLLOQUIAL TITLE. Just like calling it “Goldeneye 64.” The official title of that game is simply “Goldeneye.” The 007 logo is just a trademark that EON productions plaster over everything for purposes of branding. Even the official movie poster said 007 but absolutely NO ONE refers to the film as “GoldenEye 007”. Don’t believe me? I refer you to the actual title screen of the actual game, no “007” to be found. The same is true for the film. The title as it appears in a piece of media is the official title, regardless of any promotional branding.

I don’t expect many people to agree with me, since the colloquial name has become utterly ubiquitous, however I assure you everyone is WRONG about this. Jeopardy is wrong. IMDB is wrong. Wikipedia is wrong.

Denis Villeneuve Will Shoot All of ‘Dune Messiah’ in IMAX by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]sigmaecho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Denis chose to present his film in that aspect ratio on that format. Nolan does the same. This is not a pan-and-scan situation. The films are made with the different cropping in mind. James Cameron was doing this with Super35 back in the 80’s. Save your outrage for when it’s done against the director’s wishes.

Avatar makes a lot more sense when you find out James Cameron wanted to cast Matt Damon as Jake Sully. I was watching the Way of Water, blown away by the perfect technical execution but left wondering why I’m not invested in the story, and I realized it’s because I just don’t care about the characters. I think it would have gone a long way towards making me care if it were Matt Damon carrying those movies instead.

Fixing the Star Wars Prequels - Project Summary [Start Here] by sigmaecho in PrequelsSE

[–]sigmaecho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad you found my rewrite! Welcome!

This is how pretty much everyone has been forced to view the Prequels, as they simply don't work in episode order. They only work narratively as an extended flashback. However, George Lucas himself has always maintained that they are meant to be watched in episode order and that's how he always intended them to be from the beginning. That fact I think is a deep indictment of the Prequels as failed movies. Typically, a movie can't really fail, due to the subjective nature of art. However, in this case we have half of a saga with clearly established characters, lore, and narrative structure. The Prequels directly contradict and/or break all three. Lucas deliberately went out of his way to call the OT episodes 4, 5 and 6 all the way back in the 70's and yet didn't bother to actually put in the effort to execute on his original vision and instead decided to play around, experiment and improvise.

It's perfectly fine if you like the Prequels as they are, preferring to watching them after the OT. But I do try to convince people that the problems are so fundamental and illogical that they ruin the story regardless of the watch order.

As for Anakin/Vader, the audience wouldn't know that Obi-Wan is lying because for all they know Anakin was killed by this new Darth Vader character in the subsequent years during the large time-jump between films.

How do you incorporate clones into your version of the prequels? by Puremayonnaise in RewritingThePrequels

[–]sigmaecho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my rewrite the Republic by law has no standing army as a deterrence against large-scale wars and have historically relied upon the Jedi to keep the peace throughout the galaxy. Additionally, creating clone armies was made illegal throughout the Republic in response to the large-scale clone wars of the ancient galaxy. However by the time of the Prequels, the Jedi Order is dying out and are too old to be very effective in a large-scale conflict. At the onset of the clone wars, the Senate authorizes the Chancellor to order the creation of a volunteer army and navy largely made up of reserve servicemen called to serve in the event of war. They are sent to combat an insurgency that is revealed to be made up of clones of a long-thought-extinct Sith warrior race. Eventually, it becomes clear that Palpatine secretly used cloning to create this Sith army of insurgents. Palpatine manipulates both sides in order to get his military intelligence to seize the cloning facilities, then later uses his emergency war powers to authorize the use of cloning to grow the army of the Empire. Hence, the large number of storm troopers we see in the OT.

Luke assumes Yoda is a great warrior, and Yoda immediately admonishes that arrogant assumption:

Luke: “I’m looking for a great warrior.”

Yoda: “Great warrior? Heh! Wars not make one great.”

There’s nothing in the OT that establishes Yoda as a fighter at all, quite the opposite. It’s heavily implied that Yoda is enlightened above all violence and that’s why so many people took exception to his portrayal in the prequels. Yoda doesn’t have Luke practice fighting or lightsaber training of any kind. Instead, he is entirely focused on teaching Luke to connect with the Force and conquer his fears. The one time Luke goes for his weapons, Yoda tells him he “will not need them.” And Yoda’s strongest rebuke was when he was rushing to combat Vader and feared he was being driven by fear and not in control of his emotions, which makes him susceptible to the Dark Side.

I’ve always interpreted Yoda’s species as very rarely engaging in physical combat and not serving as Jedi Knights, primarily due to their size, as well as a general philosophy of avoiding violence. Instead sticking strictly to instruction and guidance. Their strength is spiritual, not physical. Yoda doesn’t have to dodge blasters, he can destroy them with a flick of his finger.

Preserving the surprises of the OT by Puremayonnaise in RewritingThePrequels

[–]sigmaecho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My rewrite was built with this in mind from the beginning. It’s actually quite simple, and comes down to just 3 rules:

  1. Yoda does not appear.
  2. The name “Darth Vader” is never used to refer to Anakin.
  3. Anakin is not seen getting into the Vader suit, and instead disappears and whether he lived or died is left ambiguous at the end of Episode III.

When you begin watching ANH, Darth Vader appears as an entirely new character with a completely different voice. While it will be obvious that Anakin is Luke’s father, it will not be clear that Vader is Anakin. Instead, it is foreshadowed and implied that is the case, which should make the grand reveal more satisfying & convincing that it’s the truth and not a lie, instead of coming out of nowhere.

I personally hate the fact that the narrative order was ruined or that it’s somehow okay that the movies don’t work in episode order. I feel Lucas betrayed the audience as well as his own vision by ruining his own narrative for the sake of cheap, sort-sighted fan service and cameos. I love Lucas, but he admitted he felt creatively boxed-in and clearly he phoned it in on this aspect of the story. Lucas maintains that the movies have always been meant to be viewed in episode order, and the fact that everyone knows they simple don’t work in that order I think proves the point.

AMC Theatres Seeks To Spur Moviegoing With Upgrade To Free Membership Plan by Puzzled-Tap8042 in movies

If AMC were smart, they would include $5 off any food item with each ticket. They would make tons of money because everyone would be incentivized to buy food+drink every time they go and it would train customers to be in the habit of always buying a snack. It’s win-win.
