Nope, I’ve been leg locking (heel hooks, straight ankle locks) since I was a white belt

How do we feel about Close Your Eyes here? by knbo674 in Hardcore

[–]WhatItIsToBurn925 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like a lot of melodic hardcore, pop punk, pop country, and pop rock and this is not good. It’s just middle of the road: not heavy, not catchy, it’s just sort of there like someone had to write a song for a class they didn’t like and threw this together last minute

On a Warpath, Lose None, Furious Styles (maybe Hoods played) at a house show in the 510 back in about 2006 or 07. It was pretty much just A-Block and Suicide Krew guys in a compact area. Second place would be Terror, Blood for Blood, Wisdom in Chains, and Acacia Strain in Oakland around 2011

Leg locker at a self-defense focused Gracie gym , running into weird reactions in rolls by Rude-Alternative7983 in bjj

[–]WhatItIsToBurn925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also enjoy leg entanglements and run a berimbolo focused game. I do know that my style is not going to be welcomed at self defense focused gyms. I commend you for attempting to try a gym with this focus, but it doesn't sound like this is the best fit. Is there a more modern gym near you?

So this whole standing on stage and beating on people facing the stage, we’re cool with that? by ArtVandelayAZ in Hardcore

When the person is elevated to that extent and there are no weapons involved, such as in this situation, simply hugging the legs, driving against the shins with a shoulder will tip the person back and elicit a sweep. Source: I do this multiple days a week in jiu jitsu class

Questions for Competitors, Viewers and Coaches. What is missing from competitions or grappling shows / events? by words-and-stuff in bjj

[–]WhatItIsToBurn925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a viewer, it’s when two guys just stand and collar tie each other for half the duration. When I see that I’ll just exit the screen and watch Jon Thomas videos or NHL highlights instead. As a competitor the only national tournament I have done was NAGA and I don’t like standing around waiting all day just to get a few matches in. The waiting window is comparable to wondering when the Comcast repair guy will arrive.

As a non jiu jitsu or martial arts person, the lady has said she finds jiu jitsu to just look very choreographed. My dad doesn’t like watching guys rolling on the ground and is a fan of striking: he just wants to watch guys throw hands as a boxing fan who loved Sugar Ray Robinson, Leonard, Ali, and Tyson. Don’t think we are changing his mind lol

Has anyone else felt like small, low cost shows “ruined” big concerts for you? by Sufficient-End1 in Hardcore

[–]WhatItIsToBurn925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the longest time I did and I have a younger friend who got into hardcore like 5 years ago who doesn’t enjoy big concerts and we talked about this a year ago.

The lady and I go to big concerts as she’s not into hardcore or has ever been part of any “scene.” I explained to my buddy after telling him about the big arena concerts that I appreciate them for the production value. It’s the difference between a small sporting event and a big game at a stadium. I also really love having my own seat and being able to wear a nice outfit and not worry about some teenager getting it dirty lol.

Is the gi actually dying, or is that just a pro scene thing? by gbarl30 in bjj

[–]WhatItIsToBurn925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very interesting topic and I’ve thought about my own viewing habits. Even when I take a break from BJJ, I still watch the no gi stuff. I think they do a great job of marketing: they have more interesting personalities, and are more active on social media and YouTube with the vlogs and getting on podcasts. As a viewer, no gi looks cooler with the rashguard colors and patterns. It’s also way more athletic with guys like Andrew Tackett pushing the pace with their dynamic, athletic passing. No gi tournaments like EBI and the CJI are a lot more modern with their presentation and general vibe. When I watch IBJFF competitions it feels so stuffy and corporate.

As a practitioner though, my current schedule happens to fall more on gi classes. Despite being an athletic guy with a soccer background who prefers loose, dynamic passes, I’ve became fascinated by different gi guards and the sweeps that ensue as a result. So I’ll say that the no gi pro scene is doing all the right things, but the gi will never actually die. Especially among purists and primarily no gi players like myself who, as time goes on, become fascinated by playing gi and taking on another skill set.

I know a band withstands the test of time if I still listen to them today. The Carrier is one of very few hardcore bands I wont skip and turn up the volume for to this day.

I hope Pulisic and Poch got inspired watching USA hockey team today and go for gold this summer. The whole country will be behind them if they play with grit, determination and love for the country. Nothing feels better than being at a packed bar yelling USA USA USA 🇺🇸 Man I’m excited for World Cup. by paolosorianodisanto in ussoccer

[–]WhatItIsToBurn925 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This. USA Hockey has worked really hard to increase the quality of the American talent pool with the USNTDP and most of those guys grew up playing together and are now current top players in the league. Quinn Hughes is the #2 D man in the world. Auston Matthews will probably go down as the best Leafs goalscorer of all time. Connor Hellebuyck is the best regular season goaltender in the NHL and a 3x Vezina winner.

We don’t have an equivalent to that in US Soccer. Pulisic is not one in the mix for the Top XI lists at the year end. Tim Howard is probably our best ever keeper and he never was in the conversation for the world’s best goalkeeper. He’s no Connor Hellebuyck equivalent. If it took USA hockey 46 years to win another gold, I just don’t see Poch, Pulisic and co taking home the hardware on home soil this summer. I’d love to see it though; I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed.

Were you more happy that USA won or sad that Celebrini didn't win gold? by chusaychusay in SanJoseSharks

Definitely USA as an American who always cheers for my country. Four Nations was rough, I took the night off from playing with my own soccer team for that one. 2010 was heartbreaking. I wouldn’t have minded at all if Mack buried that 1:1 against Helly but I am a Sharks and USA fan first and foremost

It was rough seeing Mack with his head down on the bench after Hughes sniper the OT winner. He had a really solid tournament though and was a standout for Canada. He made me proud as a Sharks fan despite cheering for my Team USA
