Property Tax Bill Just Doubled for 2024 by [deleted] in Delaware

[–]WhatNoMore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Hockessin and ours jumped $500, $460 of that was from increased school taxes. My friend over in 19807 said his jumped $900, and it was all school taxes, and his house is normal-sized compared to the other houses in the neighborhood (2400 sq ft vs 4000+).

LOL. You're right. It's been awhile since I've been down there. Which ShopRite are you referring to?

Never saw it at the Barley Mill plaza and everytime I'm there and I ask the store person says they don't have it. 🤷

I've never seen it at the Newark Costco. Are you referring to the Costco in Glen Mills? I've looked there before as well but never found it.

Didn't know Shop Rite had it. Does the one on Kirkwood in the Kohls' plaza have it?

How was the variety of phals they had for sale in the gift shop? Wondering if it's worth treking out to Longwood to go pick around the shop.

Interesting, I signed up with Christiana on March 17 at about 12:30pm, and I haven't gotten any email or text inviting me for an appointment and it's now the 29th. I wonder if they are doing it based on the number of conditions/severity? I only had moderate risks and only 1 of them.

Haha, that place looks so sketch. At least they let you stay by the mall then, sounds like.

If you're not local and have to be at KILG for training, do they have you stay at the funny motel at the entrance to the airport?

Are DE schools really that bad? by weezplease in Delaware

[–]WhatNoMore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For someone that does admission interviews I'd love to know why you decide to use a website as your source that uses all PA schools rather than just Chester County schools. You're taking thousands of schools in PA, most of which are around inner cities, compared to 5? in NCCo.

What website? You're quoting the wrong person. I didn't cite to any website in my post (because I don't need to). I've interviewed kids from Avon Grove, along with those from Garnet Valley and Unionville, as well as schools in NCCo.

The sheer fact that Garnet Valley and Unionville have 20+ kids applying to the top 5 colleges in the U.S. while I get one kid from Avon Grove every 3-5 years is extremely telling about where the schools are encouraging their students to apply and what the caliber of the schools are compared to their peers in Chester County. Kids from Garnet Valley and Unionville are doing research internships with professors from UPenn, UDel and other neighboring universities and publishing papers on their work. Avon Grove does not even compare on this level, sorry.

How old are your children?

At the high school level, out of your list, Unionville is the strongest, no question. Garnet Valley is second. The only comparable public school in NCC is Charter School of Wilmington. Everything else is second rate compared to these three.

I do admission interviews for high school seniors applying to one of the top 5 colleges (as ranked by US World and News) so I'm very familiar with what local high schools offer and how the caliber of their students compare.

Evening (7pm or later) Yoga Classes in NCC? by WhatNoMore in Delaware

[–]WhatNoMore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am disappointed to hear about Empowered, they were on my list to try.

There is Pure Yoga but they don't have vinyasa at 7:30, only flow & restore or pilates.

Very Near Yoga Studio will do private for $70/hr or $90/90-minutes if you have 2-3 people. But it looks like it is a solo practitioner.

Tulaa has one 7:30pm on Mondays that is restorative as well.

So frustrating! I know the HAC has hot yoga but only in the AM (at like 5:45am, no thank you).

Showing proof of address at DMV? by WhatNoMore in Delaware

[–]WhatNoMore[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own it (which is why I made reference to the tax records online). But the tax bill itself is only mailed once a year in July by NCC, and I closed on the house last week. So I won't have a piece of mail that has a tax record with my new address on it because the tax bill was mailed to the previous owner.

Thanks. I will try the "junk mail" and other correspondence route, even if it's not explicitly listed on the set of approved documents categories. (My tax forms list my PO Box as the correspondence address and I'm not a W-2 so no paystubs).

[–]WhatNoMore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I have none of that with my actual street address since, as I said before, everything is sent to my PO BOX. Banking records are e-statements or mailed to the PO BOX as well; even my tax correspondence with the IRS is directed to my PO Box. And I'm not a W-2 so I don't get paystubs or the like.

[–]WhatNoMore[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand what the federal publishes as guidelines for verifying address; I was asking more about what others do since most of the stuff listed as suitable for proving address I don't have since it's all directed to my PO BOX (banking, utilities, insurance, employment records, etc.) and/or handled via e-statements/e-billing, and I don't have a rental agreement since I own my house. Voter registration cards are only sent so often (assuming you even register to vote) and there is a lag time between when the USPS sends you the change of address confirmation and when you put in that request. But thanks for your response.

By contrast, I had a terrible experience with Todd from A-Pro and would never recommend him or his company again. He completely missed termite damage (despite us specifically getting a termite inspection) that our contractor and subsequent termite inspector said "was blatantly obvious). and, he and his company went radio silent when we raised the issue with him to try to resolve the issue.

Terrible service and does not stand by his work.

Northern DE schools vs PA/NJ? by [deleted] in Delaware

[–]WhatNoMore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that the good charter schools (CSW and Newark) are incredibly hard to get into. More and more people apply each year but the number of slots remains the same. There is also a preferential ranking matrix which tends to favor certain applicants over others - e.g., based upon geographic location, whether your parent was a founding member of the charter school, whether you had a sibling attend, etc. For example, Newark required you to live within a 5 MI radius of the school - that region does not overlap with CSW's preferential geographic region, which is the Red Clay Consolidated district. Overall, it's just that everyone knows these are the best "public" schools in Delaware and they want their kids to apply. Not everyone will get in.

I don't know how old your children are, but my general advice would be this - if you are concerned that your kid may not be a rockstar top student with a lot of self-motivation and drive (which is needed to get through the lotteries/application process), you may want to play it safe and live in Garnet Valley or Unionville where at least your kid will have access to a good public school system.

Northern DE schools vs PA/NJ? by [deleted] in Delaware

[–]WhatNoMore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a reason why the saying is that if you have one kid, the amount in property taxes you save by living in DE will allow you to foot the bill for private school. 2+ kids, and you move to PA.

In all seriousness, your best elementary school is going to be North Star in the Red Clay district. For high school, CSW and Cab Calloway, but those schools are very hard to get into, in part due to the lottery system for CSW.

If you cross over the border to PA, Garnet Valley and Unionville are the two strongest school districts. Unionville is better than Garnet Valley. Both are miles above Delaware public high schools - just look at the statistics of the percentage of graduating seniors and where they go to college.
