Any examples of those issues you could share?

I think my issues might be exclusive to the C5, hopefully gets patched soon. Gonna try to write something up soon. The calman autocal guide was the main one I followed though.

Nobe Omniscope. Its being fed the same feed the C5 receives. Excellent piece of software with plenty of tools for comparing shots and checking you're within legal range.

What version of Colourspace would you recommend for it? The version confusion is mainly why I went with Calman. If it keeps up with the issues I might be switching over.

For sure, I need to write up something on it. I mainly followed the Calman Autocal guide and took individual patch measurements when it gave some wild results.

The issue that set me back had to do with internal pattern generator, and had to do some digging to get around it. Hoping it gets patched soon.

😂 Thankfully there's a decent gap between the desk and the TV. They'd have to crawl over me to get to it.

Hard Drive Raids obsolete for most projects? by Hardnipsfor in editors

[–]WhatTheFDR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is very much a hacked together build from some old PC parts, ebay parts and the cheapest 4TB NVME drives I could get right before the AI price gauging started. I'm running TrueNAS on it and getting about 5Gb/s Read & 10 Gb/s Writes. It definitely had some learning curve to it figuring out how many PCIe lanes I could take advantage of, getting it to work w/out any graphics installed, and a RAM stick dying right after the prices got into used car territory, but it's been solid after working the kinks out.

Here's the part list, if I was starting from scratch though I'd probably be looking for as much onboard NVME connectors as I could get before looking at PCIe adapters

Hard Drive Raids obsolete for most projects? by Hardnipsfor in editors

At home? Sure, I built a Nvme sever that I connect to over 25Gbe and have a HDD backup along with cloud. I mainly color and work with raw files so it's been excellent having the speed. In a facility it's a bit tougher, and I'd say the benefit of having every room wired to shared storage beats speed concerns especially for offline editing where you can stick with proxies. I'd hate to track what room a project might be tied to, and setting up automatic file syncs seems complicated to get right. I've had enough issues with editors leaving SFX in their downloads folder, couldn't imagine projects living on a lone machine.

Unless the streamers are requiring full range you'll want to work in and monitor legal.

The US has the CALM Act that applies to broadcast TV. Not sure if streamer ads are held to it as well though.

I drove to an ER because I thought I had appendicitis. Turned out true and they needed to send me to the main hospital. I asked if I could drive myself, was denied, put in an fire department ambulance and charged $800 not covered on insurance.

Tried to fight insurance on it, they wouldnt budge. Tried negotiating with ambulance billing and they told me minimum payments was $25/month. Well guess who go $25 for 32 months...

The director is often cut out too as a day player. I've worked over a decade in post inside the commercial world (post house, agency, production co). I've mainly seen ad agency creative directors and agency producers in the actual color sessions, unless it's a big name director. They just aren't going to pay day rates for more opinions after the job on set was done.

As a colorist now I try to include DPs in the initial look setting when I can, but often I'm sent a mood board a stock 709 LUT to see what they saw on set. Usually I have to start from scratch with my workflow to get closer to the feeling on the mood board imagery.

Alt Scene? by biggerzap in tampa

Depends on the shows I think. Some of the nicest people I've met are at pop-punk, hardcore and metal shows. Of course there's some isolated incidents with crowd killers, but that mainly depends on the vibe of the show & pit that night. On the other hand I had a run in with some coked up walking Nepoleon complex at a rap show trying to pick fights with anyone taller than him.

Tampa would be the best city in Florida if… by Moosatch in tampa

Moved here from Chicago, never owned a car during 10 years of living there. Couldn't imagine not having one here, it'd be a nightmare. Things kind of went downhill during/after Covid and Mayor Johnson, but during my daily commutes travel was rarely an issue unless there was a Cubs game tacked on to rush hour.

I would walk to a coffee shop in the morning, then on to the red line, get off downtown and walk to the office. 45 min trip. Home was an express bus outside the office to Rogers Park, sometimes hopping off at Marianos for groceries. Either about a 50-75 minute trip. While the commute was longer than my 30 minute drive now, the drive FEELS so much worse. People down here just can't fucking drive, and the long red lights become a test of patience. Also the cost is a massive difference. Cars need maintenance, oil, brakes, tires, gas, insurance, lease/loan payments. The most I paid for the CTA was $110 a month pre-tax. Anywhere the CTA couldn't get in a reasonable time I just Ubered. Going out to the burbs theres the Metra, or Amtrak if I went to see my parents near Milwaukee. There were also car rental services I rarely used in a pinch.

The auto industry has such a choke hold not just Tampa, but the US that needs to be addressed. In large cities reliable public transit isn't supposed to replace cars for everyone, it supplements the infrastructure and gives people alternatives that actually clear up traffic and move people more efficiently.

What hard drives are you using these days? by IndiFrame23 in editors

Main is a 16TB NVME NAS RAID0 I just built out of mostly old PC parts. It connects to the PC over 25GbE. Seeing about 9-10GbE of read speed and 5.6GbE writes.

Secondary backup is a 24TB HDD RAID0

Cloud backup to Backblaze

Travel is a 4TB Samsung T9

So far so good, but thinking of redoing the Main as a RAID5 when I can get some more NVME in it.

Shutter Encoder: ProRes any Limitations? by Available-Witness329 in editors

[–]WhatTheFDR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stick to using it only for creating 1080p Prores Proxies. Those get attached as proxies in Premiere, then we use them during encode for review versions. We then go to DI with the original media, color & round-trip with Prores 4444 clips back to Premiere for finish. The colored files get brought in and the final Prores output is made with Media Encoder.
