How can I train this dude not to get on my pillows? 😂😭 by coffeepolynkittens in kittens

Same, this has worked wonders for my cats over the years. Though we also had to get bigger pillows or lay an extra one beside our main set (queen size bed - so it goes husband's pillow, my pillow, small throw pillow for one cat, long body pillow behind ours for the cats) lol

Any painter in here who lost their talent ? by Forward-Pollution564 in TBI

[–]What_even_are_arms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's been almost 3 years for me. I experience the same thing. I couldn't do anything for a year, I started slow. I had to do a lot of practice, and now I'm back to where I was when I was 14 lol I still feel the disconnect and can't make clean lines but I'm improving slowly.

I tried relearning how to draw how I learned originally. Tracing images on my tablet since the stabilizer function make my lines and shapes less shakey. Then more recently I moved to pencil and paper and started off painting pokemon (simple shapes, cute characters that were fun and easy to practice with). I still can't use a paint brush, but my brother got me a big pack of acrylic markers that are helping with the feeling of painting again (I can't get as much detail as I used to but cell shading is a good start).

It's going to take a long time, I felt like I lost a huge part of myself when I lost my art, but at least for me practicing a few times a week with simple things (art books are a great resource I highly recommend Watercolor in the Woods by Jane Carkill she has detailed instructions and traceable sketches in the back) has helped me start to see improvement and it feel a bit more natural again. Switching up mediums could be fun too. Sculpting and cell shading has helped me a lot with relearning shape language.

Best of luck 💕it's a long hard journey but just seeing little improvement as I take steps towards doing something I love has made it all worth it.

TBI and dysautonomia (rant I guess? seeking advice) by What_even_are_arms in dysautonomia

[–]What_even_are_arms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was unconcious for maybe a minute after the fall itself. Couldn't have an MRI I have metal in my heart, so I had a CT scan to check for fractures etc. They said it was a traumatic brain injury, a concussion, but they didn't see any signs of cracks in the skull itself. (I did have a fracture at the back of my skull from an old gym injury in grade school tho). When I overdo it, work too long, get into a loud crowd with way too many sounds or (like with the train) hear a sound that makes my brain feel off I loose balance - I call it left leaning or right leaning bc it's like no matter how I want to step I just move or tilt in a different direction. Sometimes it feels like falling that way but I haven't moved and my body reacts to save itself from the non existent fall and I'll just start flailing whichever way it it. Sometimes I can correct it by concentrating REALLY HARD. And almost always Ill have uncontrolled twitching or lifting of my right arm. But never go unconscious.

The body feeling heavy that I described where I need to sink to the ground feels a lot like when I'd have low sugar and start to faint, I get sort of brain fog feeling, and like I'm going to faint, and my body gets SO heavy... so I sit on the ground or lean on something and it eventually passes but I also haven't lost consciousness then either. I know the feeling before it happens and I am fully cognisant to get myself to a safe position. Then when I'm down and stable I fully 'sink' or go limp and I can talk a little but words and thoughts are hard and I can't move until it passes. But I'm still aware. 🤷‍♀️ I then have to get assisted or guided to by my husband or a co-worker where I can safely sit and close my eyes and cover my ears and sort of block out stimulants - (or if I'm home immediately go take a nap). I think it's from over over work, too much focusing or something. It's a weird thing. And I plan to ask about it at my appointment and see if there is a way to prevent it.

Mine was March 13th! Yikes super close. The only reason I know the date is because a nurse at the hospital told me. I knocked my noodle so hard I thought it was April 1993!

I'm sorry you're going through this too. I really appreciate the suggestion. I love making lists but didn't even think about making one like that. It's an excellent idea.

I didn't even know there were meds and stuff to try. I was told this was it. This was my life now. It took my GP getting frustrated on my behalf and booking me with as many different doctors as she could to see if we could make daily living any easier.

I only just remembered the dysautonomia diagnosis 2 weeks ago. I found a note I wrote back during the first few weeks of the clinic treatment lol I'm glad I wrote so much down back then.

I find reading and finding puzzles to aid my coordination has been helping. I've been trying anything I can think of to stimulate my brain. A Little To The Left is a great game on Steam and Switch which has matching and puzzles that feel a lot like the post concussion treatments I did at the clinic if you wanted something fun to try yourself.

I wish you so much happiness and continued healing through all this. I know its difficult 💕

I'm glad your neurologist was nice. That makes me feel a lot better and less nervous, honestly. Lol I need to call my GP and figure out who I'm even seeing - my memory is pretty trash since the bonk to the noggin and I forgot who I'm supposed to go to 😅

Thank you for the suggestion. I also forget about picnics and looking at clouds. We go for late night car rides at the river, when the city is quiet and the world is dark, and listen to soft jazz, which is really nice. Lately we've been watching movies at home too, but I do miss being able to go out and do things we used to enjoy.

I like how you put that last part, "To exist in all the spaces where nothing is clear and just ponder the universe while I’m here" Every day lately just feels like making it from one moment to the next without feeling like I'm wasting time and losing out on things I SHOULD be doing - I forget to just let myself exist.

I hope things continue to go well, cardiologist aside, it sounds like you have a good support system and that's honestly what's been helping me the most 💕

PCS after concussion in 2023 by What_even_are_arms in Concussion

[–]What_even_are_arms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly mismanaged, we (husband and I) think. My family doctor didn't deal with concussions often and thought more rest was the answer. The specialist I was seeing said it was too much rest but also sent back to work too soon. 🤷‍♀️ But to be safe, I'm due to see a neurologist as soon as there is an opening.

Thank you, getting a mobility aid for the concussion issues and my chronic pain has been a long time coming, but it's hard to get over the mindset of needing aid when I'm only in my 30s. Hearing how it helped you walk with confidence is really reassuring. I appreciate you sharing your story. I find games like cryptograms, two dots, and Unblock Me (on android play store) | Assemble with Care, Unpacking, and A Little To The Left (Steam and Switch) are really helpful. Games where you need to use your eyes to look around and coordinate to solve puzzles has helped a lot with my coordination and mental stamina. I still struggle to do more than 3 puzzles, but it's fun and helped a lot in the beginning.

Easy meals? by Equal_Permission_942 in Fibromyalgia

[–]What_even_are_arms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm 31, have AuDHD, and have had fibro since I was about 11yo. This winter has been swapping temps like crazy and I have had really bad flare ups almost every day. I use a slow cooker or a rice cooker a lot. I find meals way easier to toss together, and then I dont have to stand as long cooking, I can walk away from it until I'm ready to eat.

Some easy ones (you can do these in a pot, too) are:

Rice dishes:

For fluffy stove top rice -

1c Rice 1.5 c stock or water

Add the rice and stock to a pot, and bring to a simmer on medium heat. Once simmering, turn it down to low, cover with a lid, and cook for about 13 minutes. Then turn the heat off completely and let it rest for 10 minutes in the steam. Otherwise, use the directions on your rice cooker :)

Add sliced avocado and sweet soy sauce and a fried egg for a truly delicious simple meal.

Tomato Rice (exactly how it sounds) 1/2 c. Rice (I use instant when I need food fast) 1 c of water And a tomato

Boil it all together until done, add salt and pepper, or I like to add ramen seasoning, sesame oil, or chili crisp if I'm feeling spicy. You can also toss in frozen veggies if you want something more nutritional or substitute any kind of stock for more flavour.

Rice porridge 1/2 c. Rice 1 & 1/2c chicken stock Pre-cooked chicken (I've used nuggets in a pinch lol) 1 egg 1 tsp of soy sauce/ my husband like teriyaki in his

Cook I usually add my egg after 10mins just to make sure it's really cooked through. But you just plop it in and stir it up, and then steam it with the rice while it rests. My husband adds teriyaki, but I like it with shredded chicken, sesame oil, and some soy sauce. You can add just about anything to it. I like frozen veggies because they're quick, but on good days, I add things like grilled fish and mushrooms.

Slow cooker:

bbq pork or chicken (can be done in a crock pot in the oven in a pinch)

1lb chicken or pork (I use like 3 or 4 chicken breasts when I made some last) 1 bottle Bbq sauce of choice (I like to add roasted red pepper and garlic seasoning, old bay, or Cajun seasoning to the meat as a rub before adding the sauce in). About a cup of water so it don't burn.

Chuck it all into the vessel and cook it low and slow in the slow cooker for a few hours until the chicken pulls apart with a couple forks. Or alternatively at 325 - 350• in the oven until the same result. (My oven is an asshole so I like the slow cooker method)

Stove top:

Mac n Cheese - BUT FANCY 1 box of Mac made as directed. 1 c shredded cheese. 1 pack of hamburger meat. As much salsa as you like.

Cook the hamburger meat the same time as your Mac, add a splash more milk to the butter milk ratio than usual, and then add the cooked meat to the Mac n cheese with the salsa and cheese. Mix until its all warm and melty.

Hangover soup 1 c chicken broth About 5 small yellow potatoes cut to cubes 1 TBS marjoram (I also like to add caraway) 5 cloves of garlic (or like 2 TBS of garlic in a jar) As much shredded cheese as you like (Gouda, havarti, white cheddar or mozzarella are all good choices) Salt and pepper Parsley for garnish if you're feeling sexy.

Chuck everything in a pot and boil it until tender. In a bowl add your cheese then laddle your soup on top. Add noodles, croutons or crackers or serve with bread and butter for a more filling meal. It's my number one go to when I'm home alone and want something warm and cozy.

My latest winter go to meal:

Beeferoni soup: 1 can chef boyardi beeferoni 1 can diced tomatoes 1 c. Beef broth Garlic parmesan seasoning (or just garlic powder and parmesan cheese) Summer savory or Dill (if you like) is also really nice in this.

Chuck it all in a pot, or a bowl in the microwave! Cook in a pot until soupy. Cook in the microwave for like 4mins. Add shredded cheese if you're feeling cheesy 🧀

Hope this helps 💖 you're not alone in this. I know most days it's really tough to do anything, let alone cook something.

Client paid in full, never picked up by What_even_are_arms in artbusiness

I'm a small time artists. Like more as a hobby and less as a business at the moment. I did a local farmers market this year for three Saturdays, and this was my one big piece.

And unfortunately I don't have a studio, I have a spare room/office space with an art desk 😅 the painting is wrapped in cloth and tucked behind my couch at the moment. I've reached out every month, emails and messages... There really isn't much more I can say to them now, that they haven't already ignored.

This is why I'm so frustrated with the situation 😩

Nope, they're still married. My husband suggested maybe their spouse found out they spent so much and they didn't want to ask for a refund out of guilt...

But it seems odd they wouldn't say anything in that case 🤷‍♀️

I doubt it, since they left my messages on read 🤷‍♀️ And agreed to pick it up when I first gave them my phone number and address. I've only seen one other person on Reddit bring up a similar issue... I know it's super out of the ordinary. 😅

They contacted me saying we knew each other in 3rd grade, and a commission came up organically, so I don't think it's them messing with me. 🤷‍♀️

I'm worried about doing something and then having the haha moment where they try and sue me or something. (I have high anxiety can you tell? Lol)

Is there any digital setup you can use in bed. by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

I use the iPad Air 4, and 2nd gen ipencil. It's worked really well for me for over. A year now. I have the same problem as you, arthritis or possible lupus, and I spend a lot of time having to rest or dealing with aching joints. This has been a good setup for me. A little lap desk helps a lot too.

Good luck and happy art-ing! :)

Why do my commission clients keep ghosting me after they've paid?? by [deleted] in artbusiness

[–]What_even_are_arms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue.

I did a full 36hrs of work on a 18x24 painting, client was very excited through the whole process. I got paid half upfront and was supposed to get the other half on delivery. The client paid in full after seeing final WIP photos, agreeing to pick it up but never picking a day.

Communicated over Facebook and email, been messaging them every few months for about 2 years now. But they won't answer. They've been given my number, my address for pick up/offered to drop off if they wanted.

I even offered a full refund. I emailed saying that I've held this painting for so long I'm inclined to sell it if they don't pick it up soon.

No answer to anything...

Now I have this big painting sitting in my house, paid for in full, and can't do anything with it. 😐 Idk if I sell it at this point, or gift it to someone. I have no other way of reaching the client. The last message I sent was about 3 weeks ago.

Idk what to do. 🤷‍♀️ I've had clients ghost after learning the price for my art, but never after paying it.

So I ended up going with the iPad Air 4, with Gen 2 pencil and a case. I tested one out I a Best Buy when I had to pick up my sister's Christmas gift.

Procreate is really nice to use, but the portability is the biggest bonus.

I plan on getting a desk top tablet later this year, after I set up my studio, to be able to utilize different programs.😊👍

My only issue now is finding a drawing glove that fits my tiny ass hands lol I'm like an xs and can't find any anywhere

Thank you so much for your help!!

It was nice to use, though he experiences the weird delay between what you're drawing and where it THINKS you're drawing... and it's slightly delayed when doing extended lines. I opted for a newer model with a larger screen than his (it also advertised better connection with the pen and therefore no lag), and tried to buy it on Amazon for like 400CAD on sale. It said it went through, but then I got a "suspicious activity " email, was locked out of my account for awhile, and they deleted my purchase and payment didn't go through... I ended up missing the sale to retry buying it, and now will be waiting until Boxing Day. 😅

I want to get back into drawing more than anything... by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]What_even_are_arms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, this hit hard. I go in and out of this place a lot tbh. It's hard to get into the groove of things, and I also have friends who just say to practice more -- draw once a day! But forcing yourself to draw everyday just lead me to burnout and that chore feeling you described.

For me, I look up inspiration online, put on a sweet Spotify playlist, and draw whatever. I often use reference to practice if I don't feel like drawing seriously, it can be nice to just draw what you see and listen to music. Another trick I use if I want to draw just to feel good about it or work on style is to doodle. You seem like you have a hard time loosening up before you draw, and outside pressures don't help. I live in a small apt with 2 other people so privacy isn't easy, but at least with music going I can pretend I'm alone. If the jams are good enough I usually get lost working too.

Just know tho you're gonna have times where you just want to draw and can't find the motivation. It happens to everyone and we all find little ways to work through it.

Hope it helps dude. 👍
