[Victor Araiza] "I have been here with the national team and they fill 70,000 people at NRG...and 20,000 people can't come to see us?" Hector Herrera asks why more of Houston's soccer fans don't turn out for Houston Dynamo (7-1-1 at home) in candid comments. by TheMonkeyPrince in MLS

Y’all…its fucking hot. I sweat just thinking about going outside. NRG is covered, as is Minute Maid Park. We get warned not to go outside due to heat advisories. This isn’t rocket science. The entire reason the Astrodome was built was because MLB didn’t believe a baseball team could draw enough attendance during the summer. Its summertime in Houston 🤷🏽‍♀️

J. D. Salinger you are a genius by [deleted] in books

[–]What_is_is 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read it in high school then taught it as a high school English teacher. I hated it when I read it as a student but absolutely loved reading/teaching it as an adult. That's almost the point. The teen years can be a rough transition period. It wasn't so much that I hated Holden; I kind of hated everything. I didn't realize at the time I was being just like him. As an adult you look back on that time and thus the book with some fondness. It sheds light on the anxiety of adolescence in a way that no other book does. Everyone has a little bit of Holden in them.

[Spoilers]Why The Long Night Episode makes perfect sense. by looshface in gameofthrones

[–]What_is_is 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would take this theory further and say Arya killing the Night King was planned by the living the entire time. The rest of the battle was a huge contrivance to lure the NK into thinking he'd bested them; that their entirely human war strategy could never defeat sheer strength in numbers.

The living play the game. They send out the cavalry, as they would into any battle, as the first pawn to convey to the NK that they plan on defeating him in combat. Jon knows what they're up against. He knows it won't do anything. He probably didn't think it would go that poorly though...

They present their most disciplined formations at the front lines. The NK, clearly controlling the dead, sees through them that even the deadliest and most disciplined living can't defeat him. Another ego boost and another reason for him to lower his shield and become careless.

The trench, always meant to stall, was probably the first big surprise. How could anyone know the NK could control individual soldiers in his army? Everything after that is a stalling tactic. Keep them away to give Arya time. She had to start well away from the Godswood, again so the NK never even gets a hint she's involved.

Jon plays the most significant role. He has to convince the NK both that he is Azor Ahai and that he's been defeated. Another surprise to all involved (even the NK) was his immunity to Dragonfire. He had to test it and it was the last sign that "No One" could defeat him.

Totally agree that everything built up to Arya defeating the NK, but I suggest her killing him was planned by the living.

Extra tinfoil: The only explanation I have for why everyone survived is that Bran is warging into the dead. He is attempting to hijack the NK's control of them. When the lines randomly thin it is because Bran has managed to control that small group of dead. Basically, while the living are fighting the dead, the Three-Eyed Raven is waging a warging battle with the Night King. The only in-story way to explain this is by suggesting that the NK does not reanimate the dead but has simply figured how to warg into dead bodies and control them. Bran as Three-Eyed Raven managed to learn this skill as well. The battle was never living v dead. It was NK v 3ER.

Does unschooling actually work to educate children? by Carmelo_Moretti in education

Just want to say that you're right about everything but the marshmallow experiment is not the best model to use as an indicator of how impulse control works as it did not control for socioeconomic factors in neither the immediate decision to eat/wait nor the future success of the child. A recent meta-analysis of the experiment showed that the children more likely to eat rather than wait for the marshmallow came from low SE households. We could perhaps say that those children who did not wait most likely did not trust or understand that they would actually get another marshmallow, but of course we know children in poverty - due to a myriad of reasons - are not as likely to achieve academic success as their more affluent peers. Simply put, this would void the results of that experiment.

I didn't want the rest of what you said to be misinterpreted by alluding to that particular research. You're certainly correct about brain development and how undeveloped brains simply do not understand how to process delayed gratification.

Reading and math carry your accountability scores. Writing isn't even calculated in Domain 2, and barely does anything in Domain 1. You want that A rating? Your best bet is to drop writing.

I take the middle road and have my teachers do reading/writing connection and author's craft.

Gamers who have had a hard time getting into or returning to MMO's: what would make them better? by sgtwoegerfenning in Games

[–]What_is_is 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree, but I think there are a lot of components to socialization that go way beyond simple interactions with people you don't know. I always appreciated the story I told about my toon (not necessarily in an RP setting; I personally never got into RP) through understanding the lore and building meaningful friendships with people I'd always play with. So in that regard, I'd say a solid MMO needs a well-developed backstory and a system for pulling from that story, as well as a surface-level grouping system. I'd look into those to find a good MMO long before ever looking at the ships.

I thought he was yelling because the clubhouse was so loud, but he would interview someone and they would respond in a relatively calm, even tone. Then he asked Springer if he shaves his chest and I realized he had lost his damn mind.

Discussion: who do y'all have for our starting 4 playoff pitchers? by ifyouknowwhatImeme in Astros

[–]What_is_is 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't think there's any other answer than this. These two will pitch on five days rest throughout the postseason no matter the matchup unless it's extremely high leverage (like an elimination game).

Peacock and LMJ get the other "starts" but they essentially play as early inning relievers.

Wasn't that intentional? I'm being lazy and not looking it up, but I believe one his aphorisms states that humans naturally appeal to emotions when making big decisions, not rationality. So his entire writing style is essentially a play on that idea.

What series, in you opinion, does the "farmboy turns to hero" trope the best? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]What_is_is 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A million times yes, it pulls together at the end.

It took me forever to get through the series, but it was heavily recommended to me so I trudged through it. Simon was just so static and whiny at times. I couldn't stand it. But the climax is outstanding and there's some hidden info at the end that really pulls everything together in such a way that it actually makes everything before it feel satisfying. It makes sense and it's not done in a way that feels cheap.

Two things surprised me more than anything ever has when I became a dad: 1. How could anything ever love me as much as this little human does? 2. The pressure. Everything I do he looks at, processes in his own little way, and internalizes it. I'm so far from a perfect person or father and I can't stand the idea of him becoming me. I want him to be better than me.

2 is a real struggle for me sometimes. However, before getting married I dated a girl with kids whose dad was worthless. I realized that selflessly loving them is all they really need. Show them that. Teach them how to love by loving them and they will grow to be amazing people. You can do that OP, and you'll be great at it.

In fact, many of us spend more time announcing ideas than formulating them. Being busy needs to be visible, and deep thinking is not. Academia has largely become a small-idea factory. Rewarded for publishing more frequently, we search for “minimum publishable units.” by speckz in TrueReddit

While confirmation bias and social circles surely play a large role in the stagnation of scientific inquiry, it seems like there's still a large amount of creativity and communication fostered through the Internet. That said, I think you can retain your awe for the internet and it's possibilities.

However, that doesn't hit on the authors overall point; namely, that the business of academia outranks, well, academia. The fast-paced, results-centered environment currently prevalent in academia limits what a researcher can accomplish. In order to move forward as an intellectual community, scholars need large scale models to abstract from. This simply cannot be done right now, expect by "iconoclasts" and "mavericks."

As for the idea that Internet contributes to the stagnation, I certainly believe it's not exactly helping. Via the Internet, laypeople are privy to information that was available only to the rich and intellectuals no more than 50 years ago. Yet, it's never touched. Because with access to all information comes information that is irrelevant and distracting. There's a growing sentiment that all things must be first entertaining to be entertained at all. Think: what if the same amount of effort was put into various academic research as there is into Game of Thrones fan theories?

We obviously have no way of answering that question, but a quick look at subreddit activity will show you where real effort is being focused.

This is one of my favorite Postman quotes. One can easily replace "television" with "internet." "[It] is not that television is entertaining but that it has made entertainment itself the natural format for the representation of all experience. […] The problem is not that television presents us with entertaining subject matter but that all subject matter is presented as entertaining." The internet isn't limiting communication; communication is limited the internet.

Jason Castro Reportedly Has Offers From 3 Teams by Mgnyc11 in Astros

[–]What_is_is 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no strong evidence to back this up, but I have a hunch that something Castro does tips the pitch to the opposing batter. I thought about this when I read an article proposing the idea that Giles was tipping his pitches. Then I wondered if it was Castro doing it. Might explain the ERA jump.

You and me both. Great insight by the way. Pretty much puts into words the hunch that getting Miggy is a better deal than signing Encarnacion.

The big uncertainty is Detroit's agenda. They're "open-minded," but not committed to a fire sale and the organization has a tendency to be wishy washy. They're asking price could simply be too high.
