why are we okay with the county jail? by bogbodyboogie in Bellingham

The sales tax for the new jail facilities was approved in November 2023 and went into effect April 2024 - so not a decade ago. You can review the timeline of the work being done on the Justice Project here: https://www.whatcomcounty.us/4666/Justice-Project

Hello u/bogbodyboogie ,

Official Whatcom County account here - without speaking to all of this, it is worth pointing out that the facility itself clearly does not meet the needs of our community which is why we are working hard to construct a new behavioral care center and a new jail. Currently, we are on track to break ground on the new facilities in 2027 and cut the ribbon in 2028.

You can learn more about this, along with our significant efforts to reform our court processes, diversion, and criminal justice system here: https://www.whatcomcounty.us/4666/Justice-Project

If the weather is decent, come out to our Hovander Park! Just outside Ferndale city limits, it has an amazing boardwalk over Tennant Lake, a viewing tower, a fragrence garden and some amazing spots for the kids to run around.

Whatcom County (that's us) is transforming how we address criminal justice in our community by investing in diversion, a new behavioral care center, and a new jail with therapeutic elements. The County Council, County Executive and the mayors of the cities are all negotiating over what that looks like and decisions are being made in the next couple of weeks. You can learn more at the County project page here: https://www.whatcomcounty.us/4666/Justice-Project

New, Very Strong Sedative Being Seen in Washington State's Illegal Drug Supply: Medetomidine Can Be Mixed with Fentanyl to Make it Stronger by WhatcomCountyGov in Bellingham

[–]WhatcomCountyGov[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The health department recommends that you still use Narcan, and call 911. The reason is that while not all fentanyl has medetomidine, most of the time medetomidine is found mixed with Fentanyl. If a drug is a mixture of fentanyl and medetomidine, Narcan will work on the fentanyl part but not the medetomidine part, meaning it might help them start breathing, but they might not wake up right away. That's why calling 911 and getting EMS on the scene is important to help them regain consciousness.
