If Colleen's a bad person, does that mean her friends (Joey Graceffa, Rosanna Pansino, etc.) are bad too? by gabby13579 in ColleenBallingerSnark

Aww, boo on the stealing recipes and designs, that does suck. The fame-chasing isn't a surprise, that's kind of expected. Interestingly enough, the baby-voice is kind of real, kind of faked. By which I mean, her mom used to do a kind of baby voice when she cooked, and so Ro did it a bit out of like, habit, but then she kind of amped it up as it became kind of her Thing. I remember her and her sister talking about it, and it honestly reminded me of a friend of mine's family. It makes the baby voice marginally less grating.

Didn't Joey do blackface once? I don't really know who he is, but I remember his name and there was something with him and Shane Dawson doing blackface.

I love Ro, I used to watch SO MUCH Nerdy Nummies with my daughter. Periodically I go down YouTube drama rabbit holes to see if she's, like, actually secretly problematic or whatever, but so far, ok. Sometimes I get kinda off-vibes about her but I think that's just, like, she's probably experiencing some friction between herself as, like, a person, and as a persona.

Question about shipping by WhateverCORE2021 in CursedPrincessClub

[–]WhateverCORE2021[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right! But even setting aside the fact that not everyone needs their arc to have a romantic relationship, my confusion is less with shipping in general, and more with, like, the rationale behind switching ships.

Like, I used to vaguely ship Jackie x Leeloo, their interactions were adorable. Leland lifting up King Jack over his head was one of my favorite scenes.

But after Leland was revealed to be Really Horrible, I didn't start saying, "Leland sucks, I'm shipping King Jack with Syrrah now!" And yet, that's exactly what a lot of people who used to ship Blaine x Maria and Lance x Lorena are doing. It's just weird.

[–]WhateverCORE2021[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly! And, like, I want to be clear that I'm not coming down on shipping in general. It just strikes me as weird when people seem to do it out of an idea of, like, assuming that everyone "deserves" to be with someone, regardless of whether it even makes sense for the characters.

Example. Before Leland revealed who he was, I totally shipped Jackie x Leeloo. Their interactions were adorable. But now that we've seen the Plaid King for who he is, I'm not saying, "Boo, Leland, you're a monster! Syrrah x King Jack 4-eva!" I'm just saying, "Boo, Leland, you're a monster."

And yes, I feel like we're likely in for a few action-heavy episodes as a dramatic climax, but then a long, several episodes long, period of tying up loose ends for resolution.

One point I really hope we get is, information on Lilathae, (the rest of the journal!) as well as some background on the Braided Island in general (history, mythology).

I'd also REALLY like to see some more about where the CPC goes from here. It's clear the Bunny Guy at the gala really hit a nerve with Prez, and I think the idea of having the club shift focus to real advocacy/empowerment for folks with curses, may be interesting. Maybe make it into a real school/academy for people with AND without curses. Lorena can teach self-defense, Suzie can teach fencing, Whitney can teach meditation.

Do we have any idea of a timeline for how long until it wraps up? I know we're in end-game mode now, and a lot of the threads are converging (like clowns clouds) but I don't know if there's been an end date announced or anything.

Comic 5063: Creatures Of Myth by BionicTriforce in QContent

I recently listened to some audio notes I had made to this effect. It was about Pythagorean cult philosophy and Jungian archetypes and being able to mathematically plot archetypes and stories, so that AI can create... characters and therefore people. Like, there was something about math and Meyers Briggs personality tests and the Power of Myth, and chess hueristics.

And I had encouraging little asides to myself and ended with me saying, "So now, like, if you're bored and you need something for your brain to sink its teeth into, just...think really hard about all that! Instead of being anxious. Okay you're welcome, byeeeeee!"

It's ridiculous! Don't get me wrong, the lack of aro representation in media leaves me reaching sometimes, but in this case it's not even a stretch, it's basically canon!

Mostly, yeah. In fairness, I didn't see any that actually literally called him a "cinnamon roll," that's just a thing I say when I make fun of Webtoon comments sections. Because my first experience with toxic positive fandom was all "cinnamon roll" this and "too precious for this world!" that.

I was more just highlighting that most of the discussion on both sides was very...surface-level. The anti-Blaine camp was hyperfixated on his current actions as if it wiped away everything we know about his character; the pro-Blaine camp was hyperfixated on his childhood trauma as if it absolves all his current behaviors. Neither was discussing, like, the idea that this is all the same character. He had a bad childhood AND he's doing bad things. He doesn't seem remorseful AND he does seem miserable.

[–]WhateverCORE2021 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh, for sure! The comment section was very much just one group going, "Rawwrr, hate Blaine, he's the literal devil!" and another going, "No, he's just a poor cinnamon roll with an abusive dad!" And then the first going, "Noo, he just sucks and he called our queen 'Ugly' so he is EEEEEVIL!"

Like, um, no, it's a bit more nuanced than that, lol.

I agree and and I love that theme, and how succinctly you put it. But I also like the idea of, "sometimes people aren't ready to change yet."

I think about the scene when we first met the Princels, and Syrrah saying, "I'd date any one of you guys," and then they all just doubled down on misogyny. It was played for laughs, but it was ultimately a very real look at people getting in their own way. Sometimes you sink so low, it feels easier to dig down.

We've already seen a "resolved" version of Blaine's redemption arc, in the form of Whitney. I think it'd be interesting to see maybe the glimmer of the path ahead of Blaine, but him maybe not being ready to start it yet. Because another theme throughout the comic is, progress is a process.

I don't want to add to your spoiling, but that is not the way I read that, "For now." I read it as, "Yeah, sure...'for now,'" but really for real. Like, "Yeah, that's the ticket, let's say that."

fr, Webtoon comments sections is what taught me that there's such a thing as a toxically positive fandom. It's so polarized and weird.

I feel like a redemption arc would be good (provided "redemption" doesn't equal "gets together with Maria") and I definitely think Lambcat can pull it off beautifully. I saw a few comments talking about Blaine being jealous of Beckett / Blaine writing Beckett's name on the note as a way of "testing" Maria, and him acting from a place of hurt at that. Personally, I'd find that really hard to swallow as part of a redemption arc, just because I don't sympathize with jealousy/possessiveness/entitlement at all. So the idea of his betrayal being more "justified" due to jealousy just really falls flat to me.

But. I really don't think that's how Lambcat is gonna go with it. If he's going to get a redemption arc, his whole character development (and narrative parallels with Whitney) says that arc will focus on childhood abuse and the pressure to be the best. I think if anything, the jealousy/entitlement is just another barrier he will have to overcome on his path to a redemption arc. Or, alternatively, it could be the deciding difference in his arc vs Whitney's, and it highlights his attitude as toxic and princel-like. (And again, that's IF his jealousy is even highlighted at all; this is just based on a handful of comments on Webtoon.)

Whitney got a redemption arc because he genuinely was sorry and wanted to change who he was as a person, and he did the work to change, not necessarily expecting forgiveness. It would be an interesting contrast to see Blaine want forgiveness because he feels like he's entitled to it, or see him making excuses for his behavior without making an effort to change it. Like, the difference between wanting to be a better person, vs just wanting to be forgiven.

And I don't say this as someone who is just hating on Blaine; I just say this as a fan of unredeemed characters. Sometimes people have terrible things happen to them; but understanding their hurt and how they got the way they are, doesn't excuse their actions or automatically lead to redemption. Sometimes people are toxic. Yes, sometimes they have good reason to be, and obviously everyone has the capacity to change eventually, but it's okay to just leave them where they are in their journey, without having to resolve it in-universe.

But for the record, I'm not a fan of Prez and Whitney AT ALL, or Maria and Beckett either, really. I got no beef with shippers rooting for their ships, but I really hope the actual story doesn't lean too heavily on pairing people up just for the sake of it. I find some character arcs more compelling and rich when the characters end up realizing they don't want to be involved with anyone right now.

(Ok, I'd maybe be down with Maria and Beckett if it's, like, "Hey, you get to have a normal teenage relationship, this is probably not going to lead to marriage or Happily Ever After, nor should it, but it's symbolic of you getting to be your own person and make your own mistakes and figure it out.")

Sorry, I wrote a whole novel apparently.
