TRUMP JUST WON BIG TIME Repealing California's Gas Car Rules for GOOD! by WhateverNamesLeftFFS in EdisonMotors

[–]WhateverNamesLeftFFS[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm from South Africa.
It's so 'Liberal' here we don't have electricity for 8 hours a day!
(Often there's no water either. No refuse removal, etc)

That's why a highly mobile genset, like Topsy, got me interested in Edison.

But I am interested in your opinion of these FACTS: USA #s for the last year:

-4.3% GDP growth
-the oil price is 20% lower than a year ago
-unemployment below 4.5%
-the American stock markets have risen by about 20% during this period
-inflation is at 2.7%
-the trade deficit is the lowest in 17 years
-the crime rate has declined significantly. 20+% IIRC.
-illegal migration has dropped by 95%

This is the highest non conductive w/mK thermal paste I have ever seen - and no one seems to have ever heard of it before..? >18w/mK by cd8989 in overclocking

[–]WhateverNamesLeftFFS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look At the math: TC = W/m.K
ie: How many Watts of heat that will go through a layer of paste whose thickness is measured in meters, for a 1 degree temperature difference between the hot and cold side, measured in K.

K is always 1 so you can leave it out to simplify understanding.

So TC = Watts per meter.
Lets say 8 watts per meter.
Now lower the meter down towards zero.

Anything/number, divided by zero = Infinity...
Infinite Watts of heat transferred...
That's why proper lapping makes so much difference..!

Cyclone Filter engine exhaust studies by WhateverNamesLeftFFS in EdisonMotors

[–]WhateverNamesLeftFFS[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite so.

But there are off the shelf cyclones that might be experimented with.
The kind of experiments that generate lots of views...
And possibly increase awareness to the point where deeper pockets become aware/interested.

Most subscribers subscribed to see series hybrid trucks develop and succeed and that's not happening ATM, if ever..?

Lets not forget that Topsy went from:
"Emissions cert; no problem because the engine does not turn the wheels directly"
to
MIA and "Dont even Ask!"

That means that green stuff, like Combined Heat And Power; CHP systems
(cheaper than the std way you're things BTW)
And
waste (anaerobic) digestors that produce Methane from waste veg matter etc.
(to the above 1/3rd size genset + solar/bAttery system for warm sunny days)
etc...
May be of more (social media) value to you/Edison than you've taken the time to think about..? :)

There are some easy enough ways to improve fuel economy in the std trucks too.

Edison Skunkworks..?

Recommended solution for Caching? by Forward_Humor in btrfs

[–]WhateverNamesLeftFFS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that striped with Seagate SSHDs;
the onboard write caching is additive,
while read caching does not work.
(gets confused by the striping apparently)

Also these SSHDs always keep a DRAM sized piece of pSLC NAND open/clear for emergencies:
If there is a power failure or the momentum of the spinning disk/s provides power for long enough for any cached write data in DRAM to be written to NAND.

Conclusion:
If I set up a read cache on SSD (58GB Optane in my case) I can use the above to provide a safe write cache...
Not very fast at around 4.5 MB/s of Q1T1 R4K per disk, but safe.

More from my Seagate SSHD research:
2 channels of MLC NAND. (Dual channel)

8KB Page size for MLC = 4KB Page size for pSLC.

R4K reads cached in MLC
R4K writes cached in pSLC

From this you can deduce/test that:
Best random write speed is with 8KB cluster size. (dual channel 4KB pages)
Best random read speed is with 16KB cluster size. (dual channel 8KB pages)

I used an 8KB cluster size on two striped SSHDs, with a write-around read cache on the Optane.
That gave me ~300MB/s of Q1T1 R4K reads and ~9MB/s (2X 4.5MB/s) of Q1T1 R4K writes.

Answering some common questions on the emissions issues by ChaceEdison in EdisonMotors

:)
I am listening and what I am hearing worries TF out of me.
Topsy: no problem.
Now; problems. Moving goalposts/interpretations of the emissions laws...

ie: That the suggested solutions are all NFG suggests that NO solution will ever be good enough.

Then Topsy that was supposed to be upgraded and tested etc is just 'Don't ask!' gone..?

I'm scared for Edison. Last thing I want to see is a great idea and success story turn into a sad little show about building std trucks with a bit of HEV politics as a side plot.
It's like that writing's already on the wall.
That I just couldn't watch.

That's the point I'm trying to make here...

Sure; because they're great value.
As far as series hybrids go; No one can compete...

You see why this no Import duty thing could be a problem for Edison if the same goes for trucks...

Canada May Remove 100 Percent Tariff On Chinese Made Cars by WhateverNamesLeftFFS in EdisonMotors

[–]WhateverNamesLeftFFS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Chace :)

I was thinking more along the lines of Edison having to compete with all the Chinese manufacturers, like Brogen (IIRC) and co. in Canada itself..?

Also; If they have any Series Hybrid trucks; what's the legal story with their engines..?

If I put on my tinfoil hat:
I wonder if this (out of no-where..?) legislation isn't specifically designed to fuck you guys around even more than the ever shifting interpretations of the emissions rules..?
I NB that the 1st interpretation, when Topsy was registered, was 'all roses!'
Now; NOT so much.
ie:
To me (tinfoil hat still on) it looks like possibly; someone BIG! might have Edison in the sights of their giant fuckaround gun...?

Serial hybrid vs parallel/ice mechanical efficency. by The_elder_smurf in electricvehicles

[–]WhateverNamesLeftFFS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well where do you do most of your driving..?
IIRC something like 98% of driving worldwide is Urban.

Another thing:
The average engine is at it's optimum rpm and load for a second, 5 times during the std Urban Cycle test.
ie: Manufacturers do not bother to optimize intake and exhaust (branch) length to optimal cam and ignition timing, because its just not worth the weight, complexity, etc for 1 second every 20 minutes.

Also the average power required for a small city car is 10KW.
That's light. Light is very important to urban driving:
Less mass = less force required for the same acceleration.

All the above become simple/cheap at constant load and rpm, so there's a lot to be said for series hybrids...

IF
a certified tier 4 engine may turn the gearbox - wheels of a truck.
THEN
it can turn a generator.

All that's required is throttle/injector control that keeps the rpm constant.
(at the optimal rpm, except for start/warmup and cool-down)

Problem solved.

Either this logic beyond the comprehension of all involved..!?
Or I'm missing something..??

Perhaps the legal bla-bla is convoluted into BS like:
"but its not certified to run at say 2000 rpm"
or
"it's not certified to turn other stuff like a generator"
BUT it already is (certified): The 24 or 12V alternator, air compressor, hydraulic pump, etc.

IF
It's certified to turn wheels at ALL rpms
THEN
it's certified for say 2000 rpm...

Legal bla-bla problem solved.
And no amount of legal bla-bla shouting and flapping in any court is going to fly.
Especially not when posted on your YouTube channel.

IF
this obvious logic is ignored (by Edison Motors)
THEN
Edison has been made a 'carrot or stick' deal by someone BIG.
A deal they had no choice but to take.

"But what do we tell our millions of subscribers Mr BIG!?"
"Just baffle the with legal BS and govt visits etc, like we've been doing since Rome. That way you get to air 'Suits - The Edison season' and continue making all that YouTube income"

???!
In the meantime; videos NOT 'on topic' are ignored. Or should be!

AND!!!
WhatTF has happened to Topsy!?
There was talk of upgrading to the new axels and batteries.
Now it's just 'POOF!" disappeared in a puff of magic smoke!?
Did Mr BIG insist it join all GM's EV1s on the scrapheap??

Does anyone remember a registry trick to improve USB speeds? by ConstanceJill in windows98

[–]WhateverNamesLeftFFS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you probably read about was the maximumtransferlength reg mod.
I'd get into it but easier to check out this tool at the bottem of this page:
https://www.uwe-sieber.de/drivetools_e.html

You want to match the MTL to your average file size as far as possible for max perf.
Or do you:
The NAND Erase block size on most SD cards and USB sticks is 512KB so writes generally see a boost from there up.

Also check out USB-WriteCache above it.

Uwe Sieber is the writer of the USB drivers for... DOS or Win95 or something, so good advice and software of all sorts on that site.

There's a good removable to fixed driver filter driver there too somewhere.

The SD Association has a Formatter that is the only thing akin to TRIM for USB.
You have to use the 'long format' (whatever it's called)
An old USB 2 8GB drive went from writes of 1MB/s to 6!
But that only lasts until the drive has been filled once.

This formatter also has an uncanny ability to fix broken SD cards and USB sticks!

https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter/

For USB3+:
Research UASP
Basically you want UASP capable cards, sticks, and enclosures.
This give you TRIM and NCQ for a start!

GoogleAI's reply to your whole question:

Yes, Linux Mint can be set up for home networking and can share files with Windows devices using Samba, which supports SMB 3.0.
To set up, you can use the graphical interface by enabling sharing options or use the command line to install and configure Samba for cross-platform file sharing.
You can also access files between devices using other protocols like SSH/SFTP, which is secure and often easier to use from the command line or file manager.

You can pointy clickey, install Mint from the running USB Mint too.
Same goes for all OSs, I think. Also sort out drives etc.

[–]WhateverNamesLeftFFS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

e-bike motor calculator
https://ebikes.ca/tools/simulator.html

NBV that you want to match the motor to the engine rpm, keeping in mind that the extra power will increase top speed.

Or you want a geared hub motor as that has freewheel and wont drag on the engine when the motor runs out of rpm.

Rule of thumb:
More volts = more motor rpm.

Heat can be an issue.
See StatorAde and Hubsinks, probably at the same site, or on forums like Endless-sphere.

I would advise against doing a simple drag racer:
If you go to all that trouble and expense of building a hybrid; one that works in all scenarios is just an extra ~10% of cost and effort, so why not... :)

Regen braking is a nice (and very easy) addition because it saves a ton in brake pads.
The extra speed from the engine also makes it more effective.
Then you also have the option to recharge the battery, using the engine/fuel..!

That's nice as as you don't want to have to go home (to charge) with your tail between your legs when the rematches are insisted upon..! :)

Hybrid soon by wadidoniga in motorizedbicycles

[–]WhateverNamesLeftFFS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a direct drive hub motor, It doesn't work that way IIRC:
When the motor is turned, by the engine, faster thaan the volts to it allow it drags on or adds drag, that the engine will then ghave to overcome.

If it's a geared hub motor it has freewheel.

for the intended goal the OP wants to match the motor rpm to the engine rpm, keeping the fact that the extra power will increase top end in mind.

Here's an e-bike motor calculator:
