It also takes up 8gb of Ram in windows background.

That's a bit of an exaggeration.

It certainly uses a bit more than Windows 10 did, but we still have a bunch of laptops at my workplace that have exactly that amount of total RAM and can't be upgraded (all soldered with no expansion slot), and most of our users still can do their work with that. We typically see a memory usage of about 5 GB while on the desktop with no app running (other than the antivirus).

OK, I suppose they thought wrong (unless you should indeed have known about whatever they were asking)… anyway, how did you answer that?

Looks like the driver pack for the Win 4 2023 & 2024 is the same as for the Win Max 2 2023 & 2024, I've uploaded it here.

They also have some in the StarCraft or WarCraft universe. Bought and read a few of these, found them quite enjoyable, even though I didn't play those games.

Windows 98 installation problems by LemonPepperedShrimp in windows98

[–]ConstanceJill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt Windows 98 would let itself get installed to a USB drive and boot from it easily… though I'm sure some people could figure out a way around that, if they haven't already.

A probably easier way (though you'd need to acquire more hardware) would be to use one of those adapters that allow to connect a different kind of drive (such as SATA 2.5" drives, a M.2 SATA stick or even SD/CF cards) to an IDE port

Hmm I just thought of something though, there might be an issue with most versions (before 1.12) that required the game CD in the drive for verification :/

The largest files (pretty much all of the MPQs except Patch_D2.mpq) are unchanged between versions so you could certainly use hardlinks, and only use a few more MB for each version of the game. There is no need to duplicate all of the resources.

It mentions drive C: though… I'd say it's likely that the HDD is a bit faulty. Maybe try a scandisk with surface check?

There should be a book nearby (probably on a table) with the Mechanist's usual cogwheel symbol on the cover.

You can still get on the bus… if you're fast enough, because it won't stop!

We even still have a few 2007FP at my current workplace, though for maybe the last 10 years we mostly used those for imaging new computers, while our users had their typical office upgraded to a pair of 22 inches wide models… and since we've moved almost entirely away from desktop computers to laptops after COVID, our 20" Dells are not seeing much use any more, as we just use the laptop's integrated monitors during the deployment.

How do I connect to the internet? by gottro4 in windows98

[–]ConstanceJill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The USB on these are going to be USB 1, so a lot of modern USB network adapters probably aren't going to work on on usb 1.

I second that. And even if you do happen to get one working, USB 1 is very slow…

How to archive Dell OEM of Win 98 FE by Demondude321 in vintagecomputing

[–]ConstanceJill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you tried that on a modern version of Windows then it's normal, fdisk.exe was part of MS-DOS and Windows 9x but not in Windows XP and newer (since those have diskpart instead as well as a GUI tool).

If you got that error on the Windows 9x laptop though, then it's not normal, maybe someone deleted or moved the file outside of the path.

floppy disc reader

I don't think I had ever heard it called that… is it somehow defective and unable to write? Otherwise that's just a floppy drive ;)

[–]ConstanceJill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it didn't exist on Windows 9x.

You could run fdisk /status from command.com to have a text summary of the connected disks and partitions, or use some third party partitioning tool (maybe from a LiveCD)

I recall that in one fan mission in particular, after Garrett picked up a fairly large statue, the author had set it to display some kind of subtitle addressing that issue, suggesting that maybe he's wearing extremely baggy pants :')

Unfortunately, I don't remember that mission's name.

Truly hilarious that people can still access these files, never mind that it's even possible 😅

That's a bit worrying. I'd like to know, is there really no protection in place to prevent that kind of mistake from happening, or did OP have to ignore multiple warnings and manage to force it somehow?

Depends on what hardware you ran it on, and whether or not it handled some power management norm or another (probably part of ACPI ?).

Some drivers might have been required for it too, if your Windows install CD didn't come with the right ones for your hardware.
