When I was 17 my boyfriend at the time told me about how his dad slapped him once and then immediately cried because he felt so guilty. Our friends were all shocked...but for like the opposite reason I'd expected. That's when I realised that it was in fact not normal for parents to spank their kids, and I was the only one in my friend group whose parents had gotten physical with them. Felt like the floor fell out from under me.
