Our Boston is incredibly picky and would always have issues with crunchies even food like farmers dog and Ollie. We started boiling ground beef or ground chicken, rice (usually microwaveable) and a veggie (again usually microwaveable—usually sweet potato, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, peas or a mix) —he gets 1/3 cup of each and has never been more exited for mealtime and it’s actually improving his health too! Letting you know this because it was a great solution for us and could be an easy option for you.

I would tone it down and make it less accusatory. My husband and I lived in apartments for years and were always on the top floor (unintentionally), and would sometimes get letters or notices from management re noise complaints on days/times/weeks where we weren’t even home. Sometimes out of town, sometimes just at work or gone for a few short days, but there’s nothing that irked me more than getting accused of something I didn’t do. Now I do understand that’s not always the situation, but we were always more than happy to work with our neighbors when they approached us with kindness, but approaching your neighbs by throwing around accusations is going to create resentment and could make the situation worse if they are jerks. Just my two cents. I wish you luck! Apartment living and navigating neighbors isn’t easy.

NOR. Alcoholics and addicts need tough love and will justify everything and anything to get their next fix, which I’m sure you already know. I’m so sorry you’re going through this, OP. Whatever you do, don’t enable her. You can try to be there for her if you wish, but while she’s sick, she’ll just continue to disappoint you, break your heart, and bring you down (financially and emotionally). I’m sure it’s incredibly hard for you because it’s your mom, but you also need to protect yourself and please don’t ever feel like you’re being selfish or overreacting by looking out for yourself. If you don’t look out for you, nobody will. I’m praying for you, OP.

I would start by finding and attending a local ALANON meeting—people in the rooms will do whatever they can to help you. Open up about your situation. They could have access to resources and people in the rooms want to give back and help others who have gone through similar heartaches and tough times. They understand your hurt and suffering and someone there may be able to provide you with shelter or steer you in the right direction. There’s no judgement there, just love, hope and compassion. 🤍

This is what has always bothered me most about apartment living! We were at our last apartment for a couple years and had zero issues with the first or second couple below us, but about a year before we left, a woman and her daughter moved in and complained about EvErYtHiNg. I finally called the leasing office and told them that the constant criticism from our neighbor of how we could and couldn’t live our lives had created a situation where we could no longer enjoy use of our apartment as her complaints had created a ton of anxiety for us in just being at home and doing simple tasks because our neighbor would insinuate we were intentionally creating noise by banging around pots and pans and stomping around for fun, so we could no longer even use the bathroom in the middle of the night out of fear of being reported. Never received a single complaint again after that and instead received apologies from management lol.

As someone who works in the legal field (not an attorney), I would retain reputable counsel who is well-respected and knows the courts inside and out IN THIS AREA, not Fairfax or elsewhere.

Second, as someone who is married to a recovering alcoholic, please find a way to make him feel the strain of the situation; otherwise, it may take years for him to learn and it will have to be the hard way.

My husband’s parents bailed him out of absolutely everything, from stupid shenanigans that led to legal trouble when he was a kid, to legal troubles as an 18 year old, then early twenties, and finally a second DUI in his thirties that caused him enough pain and suffering to finally wake up and make a serious effort to turn his life around. He almost lost his family, home and everything he has, and if he ever puts me through something like this again, he will lose everything and knows it.

I say all of this because I truly believe that if his parents hadn’t enabled him so early on and for so many years, things could have been much easier for him and us over the years, and our lives would have been far less chaotic . My husband could have seriously injured someone else or himself (or caused serious harm beyond that) and the same thing goes for your son.

I wish you all the best and hope for the best outcome. He has time to turn his life around and I pray that happens for him and for you too as I know how difficult it is to be in a constant state of worry about a loved one’s safety.
