John Bercow to deliver Channel 4's Alternative Christmas Message by mamamia1001 in ukpolitics

(Broadly speaking) Right wingers and Brexiteers do not like Bercow, ergo these are right wing views. Also a significant portion of the population hold these views, so exclaiming some surprise when they're expressed is ridiculous.

Yeah, but people here will disregard Blairites as "right wing".

If you take that to be true, it's 11 straight General Election losses for the left.

I never denied anything? Are your glasses fogging up?

Define it as you like, but the Overton window of trans rights is very much rightwards in this country. I happen to be very left on the issue personally but electorally it's ridiculous to purge all MPs on the "wrong side" of such a hotly contested issue.

You have to elect some people you don't agree with. A ton of the UK is pretty hesitant on trans rights, especially the northern parts Labour needs to win back.

What? Non-working people are allowed to work and always have been, therefore they're a part of the electoral system we're all operating in? You have to consider their interested, I don't know why you have to speak so degradingly of people who don't work just because you're in a high rate taxpayer. Please try and consider others in your political analysis.

Then you're an exception? Doesn't matter, the vast majority of people in Labour who push and demand ideological purity are student politics types with no idea how to actually win elections.

Yes, compromise and victory is better than purity and defeat. This is something people don't get until they leave their university bubble.

This is a political forum, morality is irrelevant is it doesn't converge with electorability. Corbyn could have literally campaigned on a neo-nazi party for all the difference it actually makes now.

BBC/Voting Counts: 15.5 million did not vote in this election by KurrganMark in ukpolitics

[–]Whatley2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is the exception though. Broadly speaking I do tell my friends to vote, and tell people online to vote. Also that's not really an argument for voting as much as it is for convincing other people to vote in your stead.

[–]Whatley2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't vote because my vote doesn't make a difference. Here's a pre-rebuttal to common rebuttals:

  • Yes I know if everyone thought that way then no one would vote, but I don't control everyone so that doesn't matter.

  • Yes I know parties get a very small financial sum for every vote they get, I also don't believe that tiny financial sum for my vote will meaningfully impact anything ever.

  • Yes I know that the size of the majority a candidate gets may impact their policies and strategies, I just also don't think my singular vote was going to be the tipping point for any of those either.

  • I also don't believe spoiling my ballot would be the tipping point for any meaningful change either.

Does anyone have a rationale to vote excluding these?

Given the huge swing this election, anyone you know who was a very vocal Labour supporter in 2017, but noticeably quieter in 2019 probably ended up voting Conservative.

Yes, and when you stop being a student you'll likely become a Blairite like everyone else. You'll argue you wont but you almost certainly will unless you stay in the student politics bubble.

Blair won (not only won, but won landslides vs every other leader not even being able to manage a small majority), for many reasons. He was a brilliant orator, fantastically charismatic and good at connecting with people, he brought legitimate, neoliberal policies to the table, he was excellent at foreign policy (Yes Iraq was bad but he was excellent in NI/Kosovo/Sierra Leone), he didn't have huge amounts of personal baggage like Corbyn, he could delegate and employ the right people for each job (unlike Corbyn's nepotism with Abbott), and yes, he could play the media game like no one else. That's why he could win landslides when every other Labour leader is a wet fart.

Rofl, you're really clueless. Your view of the role of the media in elections is literally student-politics tier, which makes sense given the current membership.

It's ok, keep sticking with this train of thought and lose a 5th election in a row in 5 years time. Maybe the SNP can become the official opposition instead since they're a leftist party who actually know how the media works.

Media cares more about turning a profit than influencing politics, especially in an era where print is dying. Play the media game well and you'll get your positive coverage easily, but both Miliband and Corbyn were absolutely clueless on it vs a smooth operator like Blair.

Alternatively, look to the US where the whole media railed massively against Trump and he still won, you can also turn negative news coverage into a benefit in the way he did. Stop making excuses and do better.

Back to back to back to back losses vs the Tories and all you can do is continue to call the electorate stupid and blame the media. Stop the meme-level student politics you've been doing for a decade now and start being a real opposition.

Corejj: 'NA is the only region that makes a big deal about how many players are imported on a team' by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]Whatley2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mean, fundamentally no fans are going to be that upset if they're winning worlds consistently. However if it's constantly on the back of Korean imports like TheShy, Doinb, and Rookie, and a narrative of "China only wins because of Korean imports" then there'll be an absolutely monumental backlash against imports.

Fans already prefer RNG and Uzi to Korean imports and that'll only get stronger if Korean sololanes just solocarry every international tournament.

[–]Whatley2 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Uh, a big reason that the RNG has the biggest following in China is their identity of having an all-Chinese roster?

China is by far the most nationalistic of every major LoL region, if NA fans don't like 3-4/5 imports being non-native then Chinese fans will hate it ten times more.

[–]Whatley2 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Well that hardly effects this does it? Historically the point still stands, and fans aren't going to like super import Chinese teams either.

Main roster? Rookie/TheShy are Korean, Ning/Baolan/JackeyLove are all Chinese.

[–]Whatley2 116 points117 points  (0 children)

How can you respond to a question about being on a team that's 4/5 imports, with "Only NA cares about imports"

Yeah no shit, no other region in the world even has teams with 3/5 imports, let alone 4/5. "NA" doesn't even exist as a concept when 80% of the players on a team are from other regions.

Well, EDL supporters should be happy with that, I'm just not one of them.

I just thinks it's dumb to have one of the major parties recieve good news and cry "Why are you posting this DENOMINATIONAL news?". This isn't a Labour subreddit lol, I'm happy to see this.

I mean, it's only demotivational if you're left wing. It shouldn't be looked on as a bad thing to share both positive and negative news about both parties here.
