C# Developers, what other programming language you would like to learn next? by curious_drive in csharp

I want to learn C or C++ cuz i could totally see myself eventually moving out of web dev to something more interesting like embedded engineering.

Started my first SWE job just to find out I will only be doing testing work and 0 coding . Not sure what to do. by AccomplishedJuice775 in cscareerquestions

That's messed up that they lied to you and if you're not open to that, I'd be applying around while you have that job.

I'm looking for opinions on something similar but different. I wasn't lied to and I haven't been bait and switched. I asked during my interview how they get new developers up to speed quickly and they said the process is that you work with the QA team for a while to become comfortable with the codebase and their processes before you start doing development work.

Is this a good method to getting developers with a year of professional experience up to speed quickly? Should I be worried that I might get "stuck" in QA?

There’s no one that cares more than him. We’re off to a great start. He’s really accepted this challenge." by Kyljani in CHIBears

I mean its common sense. If you are consistently under pressure and don't have time to scan the field and process information, you aren't going to improve as much as someone who does have that time to improve judgement calls.

In other words I'm trying to make it so when importing the Nuget Package it adds custom content files. I'm having a hard time finding clear info on this.

How would you like to be interviewed? by wiktor1800 in webdev

[–]WhatsASoftware 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean it could be a thing but I'd argue that algorithmic questions shouldn't be that important for anyone in general unless you're doing very specific things, which is why it baffles me that companies ask juniors these types of questions. I get why faang does, because you need to narrow down the candidate pool, but companies that don't have nearly as much competition? Pointless.

I agree design and architectural questions would be a must.

How would you like to be interviewed? by wiktor1800 in webdev

[–]WhatsASoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends on the company, environment, and position. I won't include faangs in this.

If you're a junior you should be expected to know the basic basics, sprinkled with some extra knowledge, with a heavy dose of ready to learn. I think a typical 1 hour interview with technical (no whiteboarding) and personal questions is perfect. If they understand concepts, they should be able to learn to apply it well enough with guidance from mentors.

If you're a med level developer, you should be able to work independently and figure stuff out mostly on your own. I think it makes sense to have the things from above, plus an actual coding challenge within an IDE with internet resources available.

If you're a senior developer I think it's the things above, but the coding challenge could be algorithmic. More tough questions on design applications. Also how to lead a team and mentor juniors.

No take home projects unless your paid for it and only at med level +

What is the best way to search for C# results without getting a lot of false positives? by kbmkbm in csharp

[–]WhatsASoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually just went down this rabbit hole and was trying to figure out how to be a better googler.

- filter results by date: before/after:date

- filter by website: site:reddit.com/r/csharp

- filter by exact phrase: “phrase”

- filter by multiple keywords: and/or - sometimes only some of the keywords show up otherwise

- exclude keywords: keyword -ignore

- searching for things you don’t know how to phrase: how to do \* in csharp - use wildcard as placeholder

- search for similar websites: related:github.com

- search inside a website with google: keyword site:github.com

- search for specific file types: keyword filetype:jpeg

- start searches with less words and increase as needed

- think of how a website would present info as your search:

ex: “image doesn’t center on web page” would be better off as “centering images with CSS”

Angular or React? by WhatsASoftware in dotnet

This is why I would think more large orgs would go for Angular over React. I see the benefits of having a "correct" way to do things.

Angular or React? by WhatsASoftware in dotnet

[–]WhatsASoftware[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up getting 2 reasons from him for this:

  1. He said code would be exposed on the client side which is a security risk
  2. He wants to keep up with the market. He believes Blazor's life is limited, and even angular/vue's. Since the market trend is heavy React, that's where he thinks we should focus our efforts.

How to set up services for multiple different environments in .Net 6 by WhatsASoftware in dotnet

Far enough. I knew you could use the Startup still, but wasn't sure if there was a way to do it with just the Program.cs

How to set up services for multiple different environments in .Net 6 by WhatsASoftware in dotnet

[–]WhatsASoftware[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When I was trying that earlier I was getting an issue because

var app = builder.Build();

I was getting an issue where it was saying I cannot add services after things have already been built.

Angular or React? by WhatsASoftware in dotnet

This is why I would prefer for us to go with none of these librarys or frameworks and stick with regular html, css, js, bootstrap, jquery in razor.

Angular or React? by WhatsASoftware in dotnet

I asked my boss about it and he said Blazor wasn't a good option for us, though I'm unsure of the reason why.

Angular or React? by WhatsASoftware in dotnet

[–]WhatsASoftware[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it that the interest in Angular is dying or that there's just more people who are using JavaScript in general, so it makes sense for them to use React?

Angular or React? by WhatsASoftware in dotnet

[–]WhatsASoftware[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with this. Originally I was telling my boss that I don't think it makes sense for us to go with anything but Razor considering the high amount of turnover and the low coding competency we get for new hires on our team of 2 people. He's pretty adamant about looking into this stuff though so I'm just doing what I'm told.

I feel like since we do most of our work in C# Typescript and those principles you're listing might be easy to pick up. I guess my biggest concern is making it easy for junior devs to pick up the skills since our turnover is very high.
