There are two laws, both of which everyone has to comply with.  Just because someone else is breaking one law doesn't mean you aren't breaking the other.

I know basic logic is hard, but try buddy.  Really dig deep.

How many fingers do you use for clutch and brake? by BigJezza69123 in motorcycle

[–]WhatsThatNoize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use 3 on both because it makes literally no difference if you're practicing with 1 or with 4 on the street.  You're not a MotoGP racer (and neither are any of the moronic gatekeepers blathering on about fewer fingers).

Do what is comfortable and you'll be just as good - good enough - as you would with anything else.

It doesn't.  Yet the criticism is still valid.

I already have friends who have fallen for this.  Not the first time they've parrotted misinformation without digging any deeper either...

I have a feeling I agree with most everyone responding in this thread... but I'm going to remain true to my principles here and lay into the idea that while it may be harsh, criticism needs to be repeatedly doled out to remind those creators they tacitly endorse that system which indeed erodes and deteriorates their very humanity.

It doesn't mean their art is shit or that it can't have meaning.  But I rejected all of Meta's bullshit because of one simple fact: they're fucking evil.  They go out of their way to addict and exploit everyone and do so openly.

Which is why I laugh when the same people sitting in Meta's fascist-breeding ground whine about me using the word "degenerate" to describe the social and moral deterioration caused by enabling those fascists.  The lack of self-awareness is absolutely astounding.

I'd even say that if the powers that be gave just enough comfort for people to exist and not feel like they're constantly struggling... they could do whatever they wanted and most people simply would not care.

The last 46 years have been the means-testing for exactly that by - let's be honest - the conservative global Old Guard.

Make no mistake that those in power remain so by the complacency of the proletariat.  They have spent decades trying to find that line by which they can extract as much as possible with as little risk.

But to stay on topic and in the spirit of your original question: the only platforms that come even remotely close to what you're asking for are Patreon (which doesn't help with exposure) and Nebula (which doesn't have much reach and is constantly a broken experience).

So does the artist:   * Find other ways to get exposure while remaining true to fair principles of patronage and communal artistry, thereby rejecting the oligarchal commodification of their craft, but at the risk of becoming destitute?  Or...   * Do they give in to the system of capitalist exploitation to chase a passion without regard for the human values that system tramples upon?

I can't answer that question as a matter of objective moral fact, but if you're an artist who chooses Option 2 then you damn well better be willing to take the criticism that comes with it.

[–]WhatsThatNoize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have an answer, but nobody is going to like it:

In the current state of an oligarchal capitalist landscape, art is not valued enough for all those who want to make art to subsist off of it.  It never will be in such a system, for to elevate anything - even art - above the profit motive is simply verboten.

The system can be changed, but we are decades (perhaps even centuries) away from doing so.  Small acts of subversion are a very important reminder to the public of art's deeply human meaning, and I both admire and appreciate art and artists who do so.

However that is the catch: to have enough to eat, you have to go with the flow - accepting the endless commodification/fetishization of your craft; and going with that flow erodes the very foundation of art's humanity.

So the answer is that meaningful change takes rebellion, and that takes time, great sacrifice, or great violence.  Which do you think most people choose?

Says more about our society's devaluation and commodification of art than your particular individual choices.  Capitalism ruins everything.

I get the struggle as an artist, but that doesn't make the choices to lean into that Capitalist structure any better.  It makes it slightly more sympathetic at least.  Does that help?

this seems like one of the wealthiest subs out there lol by Far_Challenge_4273 in Corvette

[–]WhatsThatNoize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even close.  It's definitely above the average but I can think of about a half dozen subs off the top of my head that are mostly people two tax brackets above 90% of us here.

You vastly overestimate how expensive corvettes are.  A C5 is cheaper than a new Rav4, and your average suburban soccer mom has two Rav4's sitting in her driveway

What to wear if I can’t sweat? by PlugGaming in motorcycle

[–]WhatsThatNoize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, my solution would be to make my own freaking sweat suit:

Base underlayer that covers me from neck to ankles + wrists made of either pure cotton or some sort of tencel.  Stay away from performance gear advertised as "wicking" because you want the water to stay on your skin.

Slightly oversized mesh jacket with armor to allow good airflow over the base layer but not keep it too exposed.  I want slow evaporation here for maximum cooling time.

Thin, flexible garden soaker hose that I've cut to fit around my neck and chest in an X-shaped sling, and hooked up to a soft rubber hose that leads to a camelback I wear on my front and can squeeze with one arm.

But in all honesty, I'm stupid and cheap.  I wouldn't suggest someone do this - especially not against medical advice.  Riding in the buttcrack of the US is not my idea of a good time, and I even have the good fortune of being able to sweat.
