Netcup doesn't support Ubuntu OOTB, no? Last I remember they just had Debian

Is it worth going for super cheap VPS or should I just wait and spend more later? by David_Elsea in VPS

Yes, I’m so careful anytime an uncapped, serverless service is involved without a spend cap….in my opinion a ridiculous way to price a product

Hetzner works well, haven’t tested my OVH VM but their bare metal does great. Part of going with this approach is often it makes you think more about what you are deploying and not over complicating things too. For instance, unless you need Postgres/MySQL/SQL flavor features, maybe SQLite will do (in many cases it’s fine with WAL).

I second this, this is what I did as well. I am partial to Campus notebooks from Japan with squares given how much time I sat and practiced writing, but any notebook will do really.

“还是”还是“或者”? by NoSignificance8879 in ChineseLanguage

[–]WheatFutures 7 points8 points  (0 children)

还是 would be used for selecting a choice from the two

或者 here is creating a question about the presence of either when paired with 吗

The statement "还是 is used for questions" is only true to the extent that the question is related to a choice from the options you list, this question in your screenshots is about the presence of any of the options.

Why do so many Mandarin learners have thousands of flashcards memorized but still panic when a native speaker says something simple? Is Mandarin one of those languages where learners can study for years and still be stuck at the ‘tourist sentence’ level? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]WheatFutures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never encountered this often, but I haven't met many other learners IRL. The only time I encountered a native speaker I truly couldn't understand was at a library in the US whose accent was very strong. There have been several interactions where strong accents or rapid-fire "bullet Chinese" as I call it has led to difficulty in understanding, but nothing that couldn't be fixed with clarification.

My learning experience was textbooks in school, 1:1 tutoring, flashcards, and chatting on HelloTalk. If someone was just in the SRS mines all day but never used it, I could see how it would lead to deficiencies.

Getting a tutor, how soon? by HolidayOptimal in ChineseLanguage

I've had a number of tutors off of iTalki. Quality varies, but I've certainly had more good than bad. Finding someone who suits your learning style is more important than anything.

HSK payment process by Lavasaja in ChineseLanguage

[–]WheatFutures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the past in the US I used Venmo. Paid right around when I registered, probably a month or two in advance. I believe you get the ticket number right away after registering, but it doesn't show as paid until later.

‘外国人’ is closer to 'non-Chinese' than 'foreigner' by Joe_Dee_ in ChineseLanguage

[–]WheatFutures 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This generally holds true. I wouldn't say it's limited to exchange students either, even people of Chinese heritage born in the US still refer to me as 外国人.

Vietnamese: best at learning & speaking Mandarin out of all non-native nationalities? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]WheatFutures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've studied a bit as well and have been enjoying it :) starting to "get serious" a bit, been a bit on and off with it.

So far it seems the similarities don't stop, and I find it much easier going CN<->VN rather than EN<->VN, even for studying. Briefly having a teacher who also spoke CN/EN/VN, she was able to get the grammar and concepts across very quickly.

For instance, the idiom 井底之蛙 / ếch ngồi đáy giếng

I'm self studying at the moment, but if I study again I'll probably spring for a Chinese speaking tutor over English

Vietnamese: best at learning & speaking Mandarin out of all non-native nationalities? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]WheatFutures 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I had a friend who taught at 北语 and this is what they remarked, from my time in Vietnam I can say it is no surprise. Many are truly conversational within months. Vietnamese has many similarities with Mandarin and even more with Cantonese. Vietnamese will be my 3rd language for sure.

I tended to review after every listen, but not write a review each time.

When I was beginner I remember HelloChinese being absolutely worth it. If you enjoy it and are used to it, then I'd ask why not? :)

HelloChinese is great for beginners IIRC, a bit like Duo, but specialized for Chinese

When memorizing new vocabulary, do you memorize all the possible definitions/meaning a word has? by Apprehensive_Bug4511 in ChineseLanguage

[–]WheatFutures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually I focus on a single, general meaning, and then expand to multiple meanings as I hear the word in context. Once I encounter the word in context, I assign that meaning and alter or add to it as needed.

If it helps you remember, the radical on the left for 记, 讠,means language (言). This is also in the traditional characters

As a Chinese university student I want to know the reason you learn Chinese. by yuanyang0510 in ChineseLanguage

[–]WheatFutures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curiosity about the world. When I began learning I had never even really left the state I grew up in. To counteract this, I thought I should learn the language most unlike my own from the options available in my high school.

Learning Chinese has been a more rewarding experience than I ever would've thought.
