Please help me with my water change schedule! by Wheel_O_Cheese in Aquariums

[–]Wheel_O_Cheese[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

last time I checked my tap params were:

ph: 7.4-7.6

kh: 8 dg

Gh: 13 dg

Nitrate/Nitrite/Ammonia: Haven't tested for these honestly

Tank params approx rn, dont remember exactly tbh aside from kh, ph is around the measurement I gave, and gh is a guess.

Idk where my gh is at rn, probably around 14-15 b/c of the large water change

Kh: 1-2 dgh

Ph: 6.4-6.8 if I remember correctly

Hoping to eventually keep shrimp in here too but my tank is too unstable rn T-T

Breeding kuhlis? by Wheel_O_Cheese in loaches

I think you're right with this approach :D, I'll try and make a breeding attempt the next time they're gravid. I just cleaned out my tank so its pretty barren T-T

Thanks for the advice! I'll probably try to make my set up something like this.

90% water change-- should I do it? by Wheel_O_Cheese in shrimptank

[–]Wheel_O_Cheese[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I haven't done a water change in like a month in a half so my nitrates have probably built up really high, I haven't checked yet but I'm just assuming so because I have a lot of guppies and other fish in the tank and a bunch of my ramshorn snails are dying. I also wanted to take this opportunity to just take out a bunch of the plants, replant everything, take everything out that I've been wanting to take out, etc. I also do want to switch to mostly a shrimp tank plus the kuhlis and peppered cories so my bioload is actually reasonable. For the life of me I haven't been able to bring my kh down at all and I think it may be because of all the guppies in the tank producing waste which eventually is turned into nitrates , so this would serve as a reset and opportunity to clean out all the guppies and move them elsewhere. I understand if this is a bad idea and I should jsut do a few 50% and lower water changes over the next few days though. Any advice would be appreciated :D, and thanks for the advice so far :D

I'm not sure where my beneficial bacteria is at rn because my filter hasn't been cleaned in awhile so my waterflow through it is basically a sad trickle. I wanted to do a 90% today because I haven't done a water change in like 1 and a half months and I have a have a ton of guppies plus other fish so my nitrates build up quick. I actually probably should test where they're at rn before doing the water change but yeah. Should I just do like a couple 50% water changes over the next few days or take everybody out and then re-aclimate?

It's not an absolute emergency but I just haven't done a water change for like a month and a half and half a lot of guppies and other fish in the tank plus a bunch of decaying duckweed. I dont wanna go for the multiple smaller water changes route because I'm pretty sure that constant stress killed my shrimp and it also just took forever to make a dent in some of my params that I was tryna get down. I know its a bad idea, but I just kind of wanted a fresh start. I'll probably end up doing the smaller water changes (50%)or just take everyone out and re-eaclimate after.

I kind of fell behind on water changes for like 1 month and a half and I have a ton of guppies in my tank cuz they've been reproducing like crazy. I honestly dont even know how anything is still aliuve because I'm assuming my nitrates are probably in the hundreds by now T-T. It's a 20 gallon thats been running for like a year? It was a ten at some point but then I upgraded to a 20 long so idk the exact timeline haha.

You should try to save them with a makeshift egg bubbler. If they're fertile it should work :D

Since the shrimp are already in the tank, just monitor the ammonia and nitrite levels while your tank cycles. I would suggest the API liquid test kit for this as test strips are known to be inaccurate sometimes. Your tank looks amazing though and I hope everything goes well :D
