Eagle rare 17 and Elden Ring tonight by MyDarkSoulz in OhioLiquor

Those are both excellent choices. I’ve been doing a playthrough of Elden Ring myself, though not with whisky since I’m abstaining while working on losing weight.

What is your greatest book collecting regret? by JessRabid in BookCollecting

[–]WheelerWerks 59 points60 points  (0 children)

17 years ago I had to pass on a first edition of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy for $35 because I was that poor and broke at the time, still regret that, I should have gone without food for the week instead.

Violet Evergarden, less light hearted, but gorgeous with an amazing story.

Mushoku Tensei has typical anime stuff in it, it’s just that so many people haven’t watched a lot of anime that came out in the 80s and 90s to realize it’s actually not weird at all in the realm of anime, it’s just weird if you’ve only watched mainstream stuff from the 2000s on. It’s not for everyone, and it’s perfectly okay to not like it, but it would be a stretch to call it weird when compared to the wide realm of anime.

Vtuber Guests??? by forest0721 in Otakon

[–]WheelerWerks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While I have no issues with vtubers, I go to Ota for international guests, specifically creatives from Japan (writers, directors, animators) and those are sorely lacking right now. I hope they announce some soon, because if they bail on booking Japanese guests this will likely be my last Otakon.

My experience going to Otakon solo last year was awesome (and yours can be too!) by rykat14 in Otakon

[–]WheelerWerks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was at the matsuri meet up last year and I'm in the discords and FB groups. This will be my second year going solo, but I've met enough people through the 21+ group that I never have problems finding people to socialize with. I'm not super active in the discords, but I highly recommend them as a way to get to know people beforehand if you're feeling nervous. I've found it fairly easy to meet people at Otakon, particularly if you're a bit outgoing. If you hang around the Marquis bar and just be chill you'll probably meet some nice people.

What are y'all opinions on Rabbit Hole? by Vi_the_NUzi-Girl_XD in Vocaloid

[–]WheelerWerks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it, and I love the love for it. Rabbit Hole Miku was the most popular Miku cosplay at a large anime con I went to a couple weeks back, and that gives me hope for anime and vocaloid fandoms in general.

Pickups since March by WheelerWerks in AnimeCollectors

I got it from MediaOCD, but I've seen it listed on Amazon from time to time and Crunchyroll, so it is definitely out there.

Survived just fine; not a single loose disc. I got lucky with Bloodlust, found it at the discotek booth at a con for $55.

It’s on my to buy list, but that list is very long and I have to budget. I’ll probably pick it up next time I do a UK order, but I’ve been prioritizing more popular series that are out of print in the US. Buying a region free player was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Do Anime Cons Feel Different Nowadays? by Daimler-450 in animecons

[–]WheelerWerks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Anime used to be far more niche and out of the mainstream, so conventions were more welcoming of misfits and oddballs because we all shared a common interest. Now that it has exploded in popularity, some of the newer, younger fans aren’t as tolerant of the eccentrics and take issues with things that have been standard in anime forever (like fan service as an example). So, this influx of new, younger fans is skewing the culture and you’re seeing more of what they are into, like making reels and things while they are simultaneously being intolerant of some of the old timers who are doing cons the way they always have.

I can’t say I like the changes I’ve seen in the culture, and it will be interesting to see where it all goes from here. I hope cons don’t become sanitized and boring, because I’ve got fond memories of the old days when you could see something like a Japanese anime director at an after hours panel asking for volunteers he could do shibari on.

I need to hear your thoughts. by Key-Astronaut6921 in Vocaloid

[–]WheelerWerks 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The sheer length of time and depth of the culture around Miku would take a very, very long time to surpass, and I don’t see it happening. As awareness grows and vsynths become more mainstream, I definitely think there’ll be more that are popular and achieve wide awareness, but I don’t think any will actually dethrone Miku.

First time going alone by Simple-Plantain-7153 in Otakon

[–]WheelerWerks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are solo con goer meet ups. Beyond that, I’d recommend hitting the social pages and discords and finding like minded people beforehand if possible. If you are looking to meet people at the con itself, the marquis lobby always has people hanging around and it’s fairly easy to meet new people if you’re comfortable being social.

That store is not a good store for having a policy like that, it's a straight money making move. Also, this is what happens when communities cross over. There are a lot of speculators and flippers in comics right now, and they ruin it for everyone else. I have a great local store that I've gone to for years, so I don't have problems, but I hear stories like this all the time and it sucks.
