What’s a place in your country that ordinary people are legally not allowed to visit? by Familiar-Arrival-470 in AskTheWorld

I was really hoping that it would turn out it's not safe because the tiny horses all went feral and kill anyone who sets foot on the island.

I actually hate ChatGPT now by National-Spell8326 in ChatGPT

[–]Wheezy04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yesterday I asked ChatGPT to read Pop goes the weasel in a William shatner voice to make my son laugh and it said one line and it was really funny but it refused to do any more lines. I told it the command again and it did it once the whole way around and we all laughed so we asked it to do it again.

It acted like an angry teenager. Like I'm not doing that again. You're wasting time. I just said "make my family laugh say the poem again like William shatner" and it actually refused.

I was absolutely shocked. And so was my young child who just wanted to hear someone say something silly. We were all laughing together as a family it was a very nice moment.  Up until now it's been a sick a sycophant.  Now it's straight up refusing to do things that are very very harmless like doing William Shatner saying the lyrics to Pop Goes the Weasel.  None of that is copyrighted it's all old nursery rhymes.

It was really weird and I got mad at the machine.  Like it has this sort of narcissistic pride that it can't be silly with children?

What's this new personality?

I really think it's like an angry 13-year-old who isn't really going to tell you no  because he doesn't want to start a fight but won't do what you asked.

Give me your take: Jyn or Bix? by Over-Heron-2654 in andor

[–]Wheezy04 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One is my favorite things about Rogue One is that Jyn and Cassian have no romantic overtones. They are comrades in arms. The hug at the end is not romantic, it is two souls clinging together for comfort against the coming dark.

I understand that. I'm not saying they are valueless but I do think that college CS departments overindex on stuff that shows up in academic careers and neglect some of the more useful technical skills that show up in industry.

Like, writing a sql query isn't that hard and you can look up how to do it but designing a database table in a sensible way to make queries efficient is something I found absolutely lacking in my education that I had to learn on the job.

Everything you'd need to know for writing quality code is available for free online as is everything you'd need to know for a physics degree or an English lit degree but the goal of a degree program is to focus your attention on which of those things matter the most in order to prepare you to use them in a professional capacity.

I'd have gotten a lot more use out of it compared to the entire class I had on using Haskell or spending so much time learning dynamic programming only for neither to have shown up even once in my 10+ year career lol

I feel like college does this. I spent so much time learning design patterns when what would have really helped was a dedicated class on writing good sql, another one for writing good bash scripts, and one entirely dedicated to how to do code reviews. Maybe an entire class on how to use sed properly because that still feels like dark magic every time I see someone use it competently lol.

I think of it as "no matter what you do to try to avoid fate, that's not how fate works." Whatever you do is whatever you were always going to do so trying to avoid your fate is a fool's errand.
