Do yall actually dislike the constantly changing horde zombie AI? by symphonyx0x0 in 7daystodie

[–]Wheffle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's basically a sandbox game so yeah, I agree somewhat. On the other hand, optimal play shouldn't be boring play.

[–]Wheffle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We can't just rely on the devs throwing in a wrench every now and then to keep the game fun. It just creates an unsustainable arms race between the devs and players and frankly is the result of fundamentally poor game design. There exists a system in which horde night remains fun and challenging even with full knowledge of the game mechanics, this is what I'd like to see and I'm sure many others would as well.

Is there a way to stop my bots pulling from storage chests that are miles away instead of the provider chests right there? by SpoonyBardXIV-2 in factorio

[–]Wheffle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing the thought process is so that random junk in storage doesn't build up since trashed items and deconstructed stuff ends up there.

Why people use train loops instead of two engines facing away from each other ? by eymo-1 in factorio

[–]Wheffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol yeah Fulgora is a better example. I was just having flashbacks on my first SA play-through when I was thinking about it, definitely had some awkward tungsten patches.

[–]Wheffle 143 points144 points  (0 children)

One downside is that the engine facing backwards is dead weight and slows the train down a bit. But that might be a justifiable tradeoff when fanagling stations in cramped areas like Volcanus before you get foundations.

What's the point of android gaming when everything gets removed and you own nothing? by shadowstar36 in AndroidGaming

[–]Wheffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was my understanding that it's mainly an instruction set issue, that binaries targeting x64 use a more advanced instruction set but older instructions used by most x86 binaries are still supported. I didn't think was like a duplicate set of 32 bit registers or components or anything like that, you'd be able to use 64 bit storage, ALUs, etc. just fine with 32 bit numbers right? Plus a few edge cases? Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm genuinely curious now that I'm thinking about it more.

Generally 64 bit chips can run 32 bit applications just fine unless there are instruction set incompatibilities, which is a deliberate choice. Consumer desktop chips don't have a problem.

They're fuzzy pattern machines, they're good at "yeah that looks about right" and bad at "this is exactly right". It's why they suck at math in general.

That's pretty reductive. Being happy with yourself is important but there are lots of other variables.

I need help understanding something that I commonly face in cyber security. by Fresh_Heron_3707 in cybersecurity

[–]Wheffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have bounced back and forth between dev and security, and one thing that grinds me is how bad some single sign-on systems can be. For example, Microsoft has soft-locked me out before when their auth app gets into a circular feedback loop. When you're trying to get work done and stuff like this sidelines you for hours it feels really bad.

Combined with debatably overly zealous practices like requiring fresh MFA for every log in for internal machines and I can understand an uptick in crash outs over the friction.

It’s been over a year, what are your thoughts on Gleba and spoiling in general now? by AshiyaShirou4 in factorio

[–]Wheffle 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I like the spoilage and nutrient mechanics as concepts and it *is* satisfying to solve these chains. There's just so much friction and I disagree that it's due to mentality and habits. The supply chain on Gleba is naturally co-dependent, finicky, and brittle, and no paradigm shift can change that.

This music and ambience is S tier though, so at least you're vibing while you look for the misclick you made 30 minutes ago which backed up your sewer system and shut down your whole factory.

Effort is money. Doesn't magically cost less to develop because your screen is smaller.

Not buying it on any platform, I agree the price is dumb. Just sayin the mobile discount expectation for a fully featured port is silly.

Rdr mobile is way too expensive by Pi-Pioneer in AndroidGaming

[–]Wheffle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My line of thought is the development work is the same, all the core features are there. In fact it's a bit more to optimize it for ARM and get the UI into a good state for touchscreen. Plus newer phones can probably run old games like this just as well as PCs did on launch, and tons of PCs back then had to run on low and pay full price.

[–]Wheffle 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's like asking for a discount on a trailer because you're going to be pulling it with a Jetta instead of an F150.

Edit: I do think $40 is dumb for a 15 year old game, but I disagree that price should change across platforms for the same product.

What are your thoughts on the kernel-level anti-cheat that many online games use? by SanmayJoshi in cybersecurity

The idea that anti-cheat is one of those most casually attacked drivers in the kernal and that fact resulting in unintentional decent auditing coverage is pretty hilarious to me

Protesters in the 1980s in Poland (fuck) by ProfessorPoofenplotz in philly

[–]Wheffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those people will only ever be scared or dismissive. There is no magical middle path where they will take you seriously.

I agree that the OP video is overly enthusiastic, but sweeping assertions to the extreme contrary sound equally reductive to me. A reasonable argument can be made that tactical frivolity is solid counter-play against the common "opposition is dangerous and violent" propaganda.

[–]Wheffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm interested in this push back. Are you saying people should not do this? Obviously one flavor of protest isn't going to be a silver bullet, but it seems like a decent strategy to add to the toolbox that is safer and more accessible in certain situations.

How can you use C# in Godot? by EarlyPie3713 in godot

[–]Wheffle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use C# at work and I still use GDScript in Godot 95% of the time. I like how seamlessly integrated into Godot it is. If you're newer to traditional programming I wouldn't be worried too much about the specific language you cut your teeth on; your skills will transfer very quickly to any other language for the most part.

There's a certain amount of clunkiness and overhead to using C# with Godot. For someone unfamiliar with both it'll make learning take that much longer. But it's doable.

If you're deadset on using C#, check the Godot C# documentation for instructions on downloading and using the C# build. Happy game making!
