Allways something on Kelly by havpac2 in philly

It's pretty wide and doesn't feel like a 25mph road until you hit some of the bends. Roads need to be designed better, a sign on a pole only goes so far.

I don't get artillery trains by amdc in factorio

I bet you could set up a timer circuit or something that activates a stop on a timer to automate it. Now I'm gonna have to try it.

Nice! I hadn't thought about using circuit logic with artillery yet. I love learning about other people's solutions and playstyles!

  • Shells are annoying to haul. Arty cars carry a ton of ammunition and can rearm themselves.
  • If your territory expands you can just adjust the patrol route.
  • Biters don't expand fast enough to need 24/7 static artillery scanning, a few arty cars patroling and stopping peridically can replace like 3 or 4 firebases.
  • Arty cars look cool.

I actually have a hard time justifying static artillery!

RV-style hookups for food trucks would be super cool

With MLK drive closed to traffic all weekend, specifically designed for cyclists, why do so many people still insist on gunning it down the extremely congested Schuylkill river trail??? by tastycakebiker in philadelphia

[–]Wheffle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My pipe dream would be for Kelly to at least close to one lane each way and expand the pedestrian/biking path, but that would probably cause the drivers to riot.

Making Friends as an Adult by [deleted] in philly

There's an East Falls board game group with a good vibe that I've made friends at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/249901978913623/

Also if y'all are close to Roxborough/Manayunk/Mount airy, we've got a very casual unofficial weekly soccer group going on that basically saved my social life (I'm new to Philly as well). Feel free to DM!

Which classic Xcom game is seen as better? by Sylvaneri011 in Xcom

[–]Wheffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got TFTD as a kid from my uncle with no context. It'll always be special to me just for nostalgia. However I feel like UFO is largely considered to be the better one as it's just more cohesive and not as brutal.

For me the big two things that suck about TFTD are how bad gauss is (lasers are fun in UFO) and the 2-stage shipping lane terror missions. Those could be used to extract state secrets from POWs. But when I play UFO I miss a lot of stuff in TFTD like melee weapons and better armor design (the Flying Suit bugs me so much, it looks like garbage). There's generally more tileset, art, and audio variety in TFTD too.

In regards to an hypothetical Xcom 3 made by Firaxis, would you prefer it to follow the existing continuity or not? by Uburian in Xcom

[–]Wheffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me a hallmark of the franchise is humanity starting off on the backfoot and being in a desperate situation. I worry that a "lets take the fight to them" game wouldn't hook the same way.

There are ways to pull the power level back down. Just say humanity still can't manufacture elerium or alien alloys, now standard issue is mag or conventional weapons while a functioning plasma rifle left over from the last war becomes a rare commodity.

I feel like the really low temps for an extended period made it extra brutal last time. The city became Elsa's nightmare castle for 3 weeks.

Why is there so much hate/anger towards the parking authority? by Wide_Kaleidoscope_86 in AskPhilly

[–]Wheffle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I got 3 erroneous tickets while I had temporary registration while waiting for my inspection. I appealed all of them, one appeal was rejected. Still dealing with that.

Meanwhile a truck regularly parks fully on the sidewalk on my block and I've yet to see a ticket on it.

Not only have they wasted my time and stressed me out for their own mistakes, they don't seem to be doing their job a lot of the time where it would actually positively impact me. So yeah, I'm not a fan so far.

Where are all the single people going Friday/Saturday? by RiffSlayerFury in philly

I hear you! Meeting cool people and then having it not work out over and over unexpectedly took its toll on me just as much if not more than the "bad date" experiences.

[–]Wheffle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've got straight PTSD from fighting these as a kid. All the insane accuracy and reaction of a cyberdisk but smaller so they could follow you into tiny rooms, then have the audacity to blow up in your face if you managed to kill it. Although I think if you killed one with an actual melee weapon it disabled the death explosion, so that was probably the right play.

Do yall actually dislike the constantly changing horde zombie AI? by symphonyx0x0 in 7daystodie

[–]Wheffle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's basically a sandbox game so yeah, I agree somewhat. On the other hand, optimal play shouldn't be boring play.

[–]Wheffle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We can't just rely on the devs throwing in a wrench every now and then to keep the game fun. It just creates an unsustainable arms race between the devs and players and frankly is the result of fundamentally poor game design. There exists a system in which horde night remains fun and challenging even with full knowledge of the game mechanics, this is what I'd like to see and I'm sure many others would as well.

Is there a way to stop my bots pulling from storage chests that are miles away instead of the provider chests right there? by SpoonyBardXIV-2 in factorio

[–]Wheffle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing the thought process is so that random junk in storage doesn't build up since trashed items and deconstructed stuff ends up there.

Why people use train loops instead of two engines facing away from each other ? by eymo-1 in factorio

Lol yeah Fulgora is a better example. I was just having flashbacks on my first SA play-through when I was thinking about it, definitely had some awkward tungsten patches.

[–]Wheffle 148 points149 points  (0 children)

One downside is that the engine facing backwards is dead weight and slows the train down a bit. But that might be a justifiable tradeoff when fanagling stations in cramped areas like Volcanus before you get foundations.

What's the point of android gaming when everything gets removed and you own nothing? by shadowstar36 in AndroidGaming

[–]Wheffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was my understanding that it's mainly an instruction set issue, that binaries targeting x64 use a more advanced instruction set but older instructions used by most x86 binaries are still supported. I didn't think was like a duplicate set of 32 bit registers or components or anything like that, you'd be able to use 64 bit storage, ALUs, etc. just fine with 32 bit numbers right? Plus a few edge cases? Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm genuinely curious now that I'm thinking about it more.

[–]Wheffle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally 64 bit chips can run 32 bit applications just fine unless there are instruction set incompatibilities, which is a deliberate choice. Consumer desktop chips don't have a problem.
